the 'jazz' and 'wtf' when you press too many chord types is splendid haha. like the direction for the display, the flattened characters are pretty stylish
Two things that'd be great... 1. Pitch bend that you can select all or just right hand notes 2. External control of voicing parameter eg by expression pedal. Also, real MIDI ports are cool, please don't make it USB only (I wasn't sure if it had MIDI ports or not) and yeah consider QOL features like latching that can be a real boon for mobility/dexterity impaired.
Was talking with a bandmate about if we made our own instrument, what it would be. This was my idea, even down to the single octave, but yeah I wanted an easy way to play chords after playing with my friend's omnichord. I feel like this is a common theme amongst people who produce who don't have a piano background or strong music theory baked in. Now I can eschew even more theory and get down to what I think sounds best which is the most important part.
at least hoping these sell out due to people actually wanting to own and play them. not because some influencer told them to or some reseller bullshiet
It's probably too late but seeing how cool changing the voicing is while holding stuff, but also how awkward spinning a wheel is while holding stuff... makes me think you need a slider or ribbon for voicing.
I was able to secure one in the preorder. I’m so excited to use this as a songwriting tool to help me explore chordal/melodic areas I wouldn’t think/know how to go on guitar or piano. As a side note, that last sound he played in the demo reminded me of the video game fable.
7:48 it would be awesome to keep the bar counting square even when you are playing around with the wheel, that way you prevent getting lost in the counting and know exactly when to stop.
Don't know if you reading this but please make single handed mode. Could work like this: Press a chord type to lock it in, then press a key to play the chord. (You don't have to hold the key) For the next chord press a new chord type. This will only take effect when you press a new key. Maybe I missed it, and this is already possible :D
I looooove the early 80's aesthetic so much. for the chord quality buttons: user-defined chords, please. with a shift key, you could do up to 8. Seems like you're well on your way to a super intuitive, usable instrument.
I think the rotary knob may not be the ideal way to control the voicings. In my opinion it would really benefit from something that's a little easier to play, maybe a vertical fader or pitch wheel? It would really open up the ability to play melodies the more easily you can change voicings.
Don't know if it is already in there, but I think it would be useful to have some algorithms deciding on the best inversion of the chords in sequence. And choose between them. Even better would be to have manual control over what inversions are being played. I understand there is a lack of hands/controls for that. But that would make it very nice
Might I recommend that any knob that requires you to twist while playing, you place on the farthest edge of the device for comfort? It’s totally ok to leave empty space in the center and extent the device a few cm out to the left.
I don't know about that. Twirling a knob with the strong, dexterous thumb vs with a pinky finger? I type on a keyboard with thumb keys for shift, control, backspace, enter, tab, etc., and let me tell you the pinky fingers were not the right choice for any of those.
@ yeah, but the keys on the left are only used one at a time. You’re not using multiple fingers. Idk. It’s personal preference I guess. I prefer comfort and openness. If you’re skinnier and don’t mind having your hands close together for long periods, then have at it
F. I’m sick as hell with food poisoning and ain’t no way I’ll be up tomorrow for the launch. I guess I’ll have to enjoy this beauty when it actually comes out. 🔥 Kevin Parker is the 🐐
Is there a ‘synch’ setting for the arpeggios? Meaning, they lock to the BPM you’re at instead of starting over when whenever you hit a new note (if that makes sense)?
would be amazing to see the arpeggiator have a legato feature where pressing a new key jumps to the nearest note in the new sequence from the one that was last played to smooth out those jumps when playing syncopated to the arpeggiator's range
I think it would be great to allow users "create" their own voicings. For example i love adding a third to quartal voicings chords and im not sure if i can do that in the final product.
Can you quantize your loop recording? Is there no filter? So far I think this would be really cool instrument at under $250 CAD. My guess is it will be double to triple that. But seems fun. Just not sure what makes it unique yet. What would you say sells this over say the kordobot?
seems like the main wheel (chord voicing) in the middle would be better if it were more shallow with ridges on the top to make it more ergonomic to turn while selecting chords as you were doing in the video. it looks a bit slick and just not comfortable adjust while playing which you seem to be using it a lot so , it would stand to reason that should be improved.
My feedback right off the bat, never seeing this before is the nob switches for perform FX and sound. I would make all of these much larger , and maybe provide for a screen output option or bigger screen. just my feedback looks so cool!
@@dominey If it’s a brand new device, why make it look aged? Seems to me like you should make it look sleek and modern… fake-retro isn’t the same as authentic retro - faking retro will never be cool. JMO
Why not the Min/Maj/Dim on the bottom so the thumb can trigger the main idea and you can still see the add on elements linke 6/m7...etc. Looks really cumbersome with the current layout.
this is cool, love the progress! 5:21 -- feedback and some ideas for looping mode, it might be nice to have a quantize function so you could quantize the chord changes to a beat (every 1/4n , 1/2n, etc). Although one could plug in to DAW and quantize midi, as an analog instrument... it may be nice for looping mode. For the harp, maybe allowing the user to set higher and lower parameters for what octave ranges you'd like the harp to move within. Could be a function carried out with the voicing knob. For the harp and arp, I'm curious if y'all are working on options for type of harp style (i.e. up-strum harp, down-strum harp, overlapping glissando) or other arps styles (up-down, random, converge, diverge, melodic) Also curious if there's any ability to have a basic envelope shaper to adjust the attack/ decay/ sustain/ release of the sound you're using (super helpful as a producer) Coming from a fan and a producer, hope some of these are helpful
I was thinking the same thing for the quantizing. To be a really good “ideas machine,” it would be cool to have the loop do a couple things for you so you can focus on the ideas and not be so not picky with the “was that arpeggiator on the down beat just right.” Hope you see this Tom!
Hi Tom, great demo! This thing looks equal parts fun and aestheticly beautiful. 🤌 Very nice work. I might have to pick one up when they release. Good luck to you and your team! - Realms
It's a fun tool, but for 550 USD it really needs to spark out. Main things would be hardware midi/out, full synth controls over a VST (software kit), full *direct* range since 1 octave on hand is pretty limited as a tool.
One question : If we play a C chord and a Am, is it gonna sound meh because of the +9 semi-tons gap, or is he going for a 1st inversion like a clever boy ?
lovely instrument! i wonder if you can change the speed of the scroll wheel, as it feels a bit slow when scrolling through the voicing. I also wonder why it was chosen over an omnichord style ribbon strip
thats interesting because i have otherwise feeling - promovid was cool but i felt it was not so much for a pricepoint. with possibilities shown in this video i started to thinking to maybe grab one some day, but im still looking for something in it that will click for me. i think that if processor would take it it would be cool to have a drum programmer to make sketches around own simple drum patterns. that would turn it into real song sketch machine
Can you share a video with some of its sound design capabilities? I know that the synth engines are powerful, but what i dont quite understand yet if its going to be only preset based (and how are we going to upload those presets) or if it will come with a sound editor/VST or something to play around and create and explore the possibilities of the machine also as a synth itself. As far as i know it can produce FM Sounds, Virtual Analog and also Electric Pianos, having some acoustic piano samples (or even the possibility of importing samples) will make it an absolute game changer device, nothing quite like it in the market if that side is also attempted
Can the jog wheel be set to shift an entire seq up and down by octaves? Kinda like the pitch fader on a CS70. Not strumming through the notes in a chord like your demo. Be cool to set the bottom jog wheel to play with portamento or release etc too
Brilliant machine! I love the fidelity of the display, that you can easily see on live stage. Wouldn't a stick to control the key instead of a knob allow you to move between keys on the fly more easily? Something like a "Cycle of Fifths" command wheel? Wonderful design, glad I found this. Gonna follow you to see where this all goes!
In context sensitive design, options are offered when relevant to the situation, the mode, the context, the environment, its about acting in the moment..
Seems like chord changes within a key are missing basic voice leading principles that keyboard players learn early on e.g. parallel 5ths don't sound particularly flattering.
So I have two questions: 1. Can you Safe loops or are they gone, wenn the instrument is turned off? 2. Is it possible to record loops without the metronome sound?
What about having the chords loop like how you can play them on scaler 2 or onemotion chord player, and then play a melody over the chords while the chords are looping in a step sequencer?
I’m not familiar with really any types of synths or e-instruments, but I’m very interested in them. Could someone more experienced tell me if the Orchid is beginner friendly by what’s currently known?
Should be nice to get 61 key version and using these chord features in a split mode or even beter using pedals so that the musicians can be focused on playing the keys. Also the possibility to shape your own sound with an onboard analog poly synth 😊… huge amount of polyphony and of course keys with AT. 😊
the possibility of translating the chords directely to midi is really cool. looking forward to the final product
the 'jazz' and 'wtf' when you press too many chord types is splendid haha. like the direction for the display, the flattened characters are pretty stylish
Love the thought and care being taken with this project. I definitely feel there is a need for the Harp function to descend as well as ascend.
Two things that'd be great... 1. Pitch bend that you can select all or just right hand notes 2. External control of voicing parameter eg by expression pedal. this is looking like a classic already, with the retro look, amazing sounds, and creative ideas for songs.
