Why so much shoving into a mattress? Imagine shoving the attacker through a large plate glass window, severing his arteries and him bleeding to death in moments. Imagine the shove causing him to fall on the top of a fire hydrant severing his spinal cord, leaving him a paraplegic/quadriplegic. Or how about shoving him in front of a fully-loaded speeding garbage truck or cement truck? Hey, Lam is trying to put the dudes and dudettets to be on a vertical bed, when they practice!
1. Students stop their punches waited for Sifu to parry and many many times those punches would had landed. 2. All punches straight down centerline with no variations, making it easier to defend. 3. All punches have no pull back or rechamber, held static like wooden dummy. Multiple moves around a static wooden dummy is unrealistic.
i do wing chun and have the same feeling about it, most of th time pratice against straight punches , but it is just to play around and train different hands, in sparring getting more real of course. Against the average joes on street my wing chun was always working, and yes i could not fight with my skills in mma for that i would need to train differently. peace
My problem is his attitude and power display when throwing the students. Our grand master could break our backs and snap our necks but he would never hurt anyone because it is unnecessary and could be regarded as an insult. On the other end, students are respectful to their teacher and therefore training together does not allow them to test and apply their speed and strength to the fullest.
If I was that age and that good I'd be more than happy, I wouldn't fancy being on the end of a dig from Gary Lam, he's one of the small minority that look like he'd slide someone's jaw in a street fight.
