1954 Oldsmobile parked 20 years ago, will it RUN AND DRIVE??

- So Mr. Vintage bought a car. This 1954 Oldsmobile has been in the same barn for the last 20 years, save for a month it was pushed out side last fall to get other cars out of the building after the passing of the owner? Can we get it running and drive it home?
That two tone combo would have been stunning in 1954. Oldsmobile leading the way into 1955!
I had an exact car in 1985 except it was a two tone green and white. It sat about 15 years but the last owner got it running. It's only problem was a hole in the exhaust crossover pipe and the wheel cylinders & master cylinder were weak from sitting 12 years. NAPA had many parts for old cars at the time so that was no problem.
Motor sounds great. Old's were known to have soft cams and lifter clicks.

I can’t believe how good the body looks.
It was restored maybe 30-35 yrs ago. It was originally white and Cadet Blue before a previous owner repainted it

Unfortunately once a video is up, we delete much of the extra footage. Computer storage space is a premium, but we hope to drop a new video soon. we're about half way to being able to take the maiden voyage on the road!

And what are you driving to the site? Never mind, but it's telling. The sound the Olds makes upon opening the doors should be 4K recorded and sent to Industrial Light and Magic before being lubricated. They would pay for the creepy sound effect. Cool to see what needs to be done to resuscitate the old girl. Great! Starts finally and sounds pretty good.

Nice car love the interior don't care that it's not a correct. Resale Red works for me. Everything on that car look too good to be setting that many years. But if somebody rebuilt it thirty or forty years ago like you said in one of the replies. The guy who said keep it over 40 mph because your transmission, your reply to keep it under 40 is correct as you know. If you run into trouble finding somebody to rebuild the transmission, there's a number of guys who specialize in older cars. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. I like the car I have a 1950 Olds 88 it's a two-door. You know car like this pull out of the barn 2500 maybe 3200. You'd be fun have to haul my 50 around on a trailer. He said you drove 1000 miles and that in a little while back. So the value of each come up a little bit naturally. There are a number of these cars out there available for parts but not sure why you would need them and that engine sounded great 👍🏾. Congratulations auntie grapevine. The orange Ford stepside got my interest
Love my Olds! It's on my project list once we get settled back in our farmhouse! I've been a professional mechanic over 20 yrs and still love tinkering with cars. The transmission is actually the one thing on the car that's never given me a issue 😆 some folks say to restore it. Honestly I kind of like it the way it is. It's presentable, but not so nice that I worry about it. Real cars are made to be driven. They have stone chips and little bugaboos here and there. The best way to enjoy a car is driving it😁

Hard to beat the simplicity of a Vintage car. The designs were simple and easy to service. I've been a ASE Master Technician for many years. I've worked on it all, but if I want a relaxing experience I like to keep it Old school 😉
But to answer your question any newer automobile left sitting that long would be a miserable experience to get going again🙂

There was over 127 cars when the man passed away, but they are all gone now. On to new homes😁
Exceptional condition has it been restored?
Yes it was maybe 30-35 years ago. It was originally tu-tone white and cadet blue. I would rate the restoration as a rookie job, but fair. There are imperfections in the paint here and there. The Interior was redone, but not period correct. The materials are reminiscent of what they used in mid-1980's Chevy pick-up trucks. Id rate it as a good 20 footer. Your not gonna win any trophies but it's presentable, solid, dependable, and fun to drive!
Is there a starter switch on the floor,?
No floor starter switch. That was a common feature on cars up to the 40's. Buick was the last one to have it I believe. They put it under the gas pedal, so people said they always started with a roar. Not sure how they made it so the starter wouldn't engage when you floored it for passing gear though. Haven't owned one, or worked on one yet
I think the last year Olds had a push button starter switch was in 1950. My '53 was key start.
@@MrVintageRestoration Yes Buick held on to the floor start and torque tube drive shaft until 1960.
@@muffs55mercury61 Buick was also one of the last to have a straight 8. 1953 I believe? I'm a big Buick fan, but Oldsmobile holds a special place with me because the first dealership I worked for was a Olds dealer. Oldsmobile was always very innovative, unfortunately they didn't make the cut

I hope you kept your speed over 40 MPH, otherwise you probably toasted the transmission. You good rule of thumb is to never ever ever ever EVER tow a car with automatic with the drive wheels on the ground. Ever. You should pick up the FRONT instead, or, disconnect the drive shaft at the rear universal.
Close, I think you mean keep it under 40. We did. Yes, if you are towing far you would want to remove the drive shaft or trailer it with wheels off the ground. In full floating axles you can also remove the axles and install blocking plates which is commonly done when hauling commercial chassis trucks and busses. We also towed it less than 5 miles. The first generation hydramatic transmission actually has a rear pump, which drives pressure to the transmission. You can actually pull start this car like a manual transmission, and it feeds pressure to the rest of the transmission. At any rate, the car now has over 1000 miles put on it since this video and runs like a champ.
@@MrVintageRestoration No, I meant OVER 40. The rear pump does not become effective until you are going OVER 40 MPH. At lower speeds, it is the front pump that handles the work, but it only functions if the engine is running. The result is that everything turned by the output shaft is spinning without much, if any, lubrication. A few blocks won't hurt, but more than than that is murder. And ALL automatics had a rear pump originally. The damage won't show up right away, so you will think it is fine at first.
@@michaelbenardo5695 if it conks I'll pull it and rebuild it. No fuss, no muss. Already dropped the pan. No metal, no clutch material. Adjusted the bands per service procedure. Runs like a top. I think we'll be ok😉
@@MrVintageRestoration Hope you escaped. These cars are now way too rare to scrap, and too few know how to rebuild the earlier automatics. But that is something to remember in the future. The rear pump is not effective at low speeds, only higher speeds.
@@michaelbenardo5695newer transmission automatic doesn't matter something that old just pull the driveshaft. Wouldn't want to pull this thing over 40 miles an hour.
6 gauge battery cables are too small for a V8. It would crank faster if you installed thicker cables.
Good eye, yes I did upgrade the battery cables and recently had the starter rebuilt. The bushings were, just about wore out. Cranks like a dream now!😉
Need cables deigned for 6v application..they are larger than 12v cables commonly found at auto supply stores.
I found a reference source so that you can believe it. You can look it up on Google. It's 6 v cannot have such a voltage drop so generally speaking they have bigger wires then 12 volts.
