Fun fact: this cast had only done one day of rehearsal before lockdown started in the UK and they learnt this entire routine on zoom before doing it live at BGT!

Worth adding as well that it all had to be danced 'socially distanced' (if your watching this in 10 yrs time - it was during the pandemic!)

I have recently lost my dear Dad to Alzheimer's disease but ten years ago, at the onset of his illness , I took him to see Michael Ball in this at Southampton. He loved it but I had to convince him that Edna was really Michael! It is a happy memory for me because Dad loved musicals and this is the last one he saw.

Have you seen Michael as Sweeney Todd? There are two You Tube clips. He was brilliant in the role, as was Imelda Staunton as his partner in crime. A very different role for him and boy, was he scary. Wonderful performance.

I'm so tickled you picked this, because HAIRSPRAY is such a fantastic show, and offers so many terrific and important messages. Plus, it's just one of those shows that is filled with joy and emotion, and that just plain makes me happy. And YES, this is premium Michael Ball!
And thank you for the eloquent and heartfelt final words here on the video, Marc. It's something that needs to be said -- and heard -- especially in today's increasingly cruel and divided world. Here's to the day when respecting and accepting ALL people as equal, regardless of race, gender, size, sexual orientation, age, etc., is a universal and 100% supported part of daily life.

Man... Marc always speaking the truth and making us emotional! Your end message was just what we needed to hear!
I absolutely LOOOOVVVEEEE Hairspray... I'm gutted I've never had the chance to see it in the theatre... hopefully if all goes well next year I'll be able to see it in London. THANK YOU for shedding light on the ensemble. They are incredible and you're so right, NO SHOW is complete without them. I love seeing certain members just living their best life in a song! You Can't Stop The Beat literally is just that...it just doesn't stop the whole way through.... goes on and on... key change after key change... is very hard to sing (at least if you're like me and try to sing like 12 parts at once) and to sing and dance to it at the same time must be so so hard. This was just a snippet of it that we saw but it is still incredible. I wonder why they changed the lyric to "and it sees both white and black" from "it don't know white from black"? Regardless the message is the same.
I just love watching your face when you react to these things though because you get totally immersed in it and we clearly do too! It's nice to have someone to share that feeling with! OK I'm done now haha!

Marc, you have opened my eyes, ears and mind and you may have just converted me. I have never seen a stage production of HAIRSPRAY. I did see the film with Divine and Ricki Lake, the 2007 film with John Travolta and the live television version with Harvey Fierstein and I didn't care for any of them. I tried...I really tried. I could give my reasons but this reply would go on and on and I am sure you are besieged with so many. That said, Michael Ball blew me away. I never would have recognized him. I've always loved his voice and thought he was at his vocal best in ASPECTS OF LOVE. Anyway, I thought he was brilliant in this version of HAIRSPRAY. Thank you for pointing out the lyrics and the messages they convey that are so applicable today. Too often, at least for me, I focus on the music, sets, effects, choreography, costumes that I miss the words because I am so overwhelmed and immersed in so much that is happening on stage. It was through you that I felt the incredible energy of the dancers and I said to myself, "Look at Marc moving to the rhythms. He's feeling and loving it and he can move!" and I enjoyed watching you just as much. I smiled and moved to what I saw. Loved it!!! Your closing was what I believe needed to be said in the climate we are currently experiencing. If you were offering a course in musical theatre, I would, without question, want to be in your class. Thank you again for this and thank you for taking the time to respond to my commentaries. They are very much appreciated. Always love hearing from you.

@@MarcDanielPatrick Not your bad Marc. You gave your substantiated opinion as you always do and I will back you 100% on your ability to articulate what could have been overlooked. Bravo and a standing ovation for Mar Daniel Patrick!

You should react to Harvey Fierstein and the cast of Hairspray Live! singing You Can’t Stop The Beat. Also, two things. 1. Harvey Fierstein is my favorite Edna Turnblad. 2. You Can’t Stop The Beat is my favorite song from Hairspray. It’s the one song from the show I play over and over again. I also dance to it. Doing the exact dance moves for the song.

How do I DOUBLE-LIKE this video?
As always, your professional perspective is on point but in this video, you would have done a disservice to the show you are critiquing if you didn't "go there" on the politics!
    And I'm living for it!
Since Nov2020 things have gone crazy in the US but it is a REACTION to the great good, great steps forward.
The storming of The Capitol is one if the final battles of the 1st civil war, not the first battle of the next one.
I wish all Americans peace, prosperity and equality in 2021 and beyond.
    Xxx

My favorite Edna Turnblad is Harvey Fierstein. My second favorite Edna is Michael Ball.

It'd be really cool if you would react to This is the Hour from Miss Saigon, specifically, the video titled: Tony and Oliver winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon)?
Also, Kristin Chenoweth doing Glitter and Be Gay? :)

Michael Ball is probably the best Edna vocals-wise, the quality of his singing is such a stark difference to the usual talk-singing character actor that they cast in the US productions

Any chances we can see a reaction of Queen Latifah's cover of "I Know Where I've Been" in the movie version with John Travolta?
