The Oscar after taking two torpedo hits and still having propulsion "Tis but a scratch"
Some helo facts:
The S-70B is just Sikorsky's name for the airframe, although they do sell a civilian version under that same name. They're usually VIP helos and you can buy one yourself if you have enough zeros in your bank account.
The Navy calls it the MH-60, with the MH-60R version dubbed the Seahawk and the MH-60S version the Knighthawk. The Romeo's main mission is ASW/ASUW. Their secondary is SAR, as every aircrewman is a rated rescue swimmer. You can easily tell a Romeo apart from a Sierra because the latter has the big chin radome underneath the cockpit and their tailwheel is mounted behind the cabin.
The Sierra's main mission is SAR/CSAR, with vertical replenishment coming in just behind that. It can also easily become a gunship with Hellfire missile pylons installed and a door-mounted M-134 minigun. They also usually don't deploy on frigates; they're usually part of a carrier air wing and will be patrolling low and slow around a carrier's perimeter should anyone go overboard or in case of a pilot ejection during flight ops.
Sierras are near and dear to my heart as I spent three years working on and around them in the Navy.
24:56 That torpedo is like screw you guys, I'm going home. 😂😂
I think Oscars are double hulled too. They were thought to be tougher than your average sub. IIRC, one of the Mk 46 upgrades gave them a shaped charge warhead to help deal with the issue.
The sqs sonar system can hear shrimps clicking. There are certain convergence zones in sound waves at depths. In a good sea state we can hear things at 100 mile away and identify them...
Jane's omg that brings back memories, together with Falcon 4.0, ASS Great Naval Battles and the Novalogic titles like Armored Fist and Comanche used up a lot of my time back in the day.
Hey, Stealth. Remember that CZ 1 is at about 33nm out.
That's how you detected him on passive.
You should lose contact as you move in, leaving the CZ.
Cheers!
Thanks, forgot about that
Conn, Sonar. Torpedo in the water. Torpedo in the water... - USS Dallas. Hunt for Red October
26:17 Broadsword calling Danny Boy, Broadsword calling Danny Boy, the torpedo has jumped the shark, I say again, the torpedo has jumped the shark!
The torpedo wishes to identify as an aeroplane.
28:35 Oy! Send Igor up to the top of the sail with one of these “Stinger” thingies! We have some food for it!
Sea-skimming torpedoes, the latest tech in ASW.
And the Oscar goes to... _THE OCEAN FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR_ !!!!
That ambush video was amazing
Thanks!
An indoor pool you say? Like the Typhoon with it's own sauna? Nice idea^^
I just can't imagine how the navy would have torpedos that you can't pre-program on a depth it should look first for a target.
I might be able to provide some idea of what happened, in regards to the Oscar getting detected. There is an ASW strategy where, if there are two or more ships(Three in case of the story/strategy I read), one pings away on Active sonar, while the other(s) go dead silent, and listen in on Passive. If even one sonar buoy was launched, or anything that pings on Active, then the entirety of what I just posted was possible in this game. It doesn't hurt that the Ticonderoga has a very sensitive sonar.👍
Cool stuff to see in this game.
Love when my torpedoes buzz the tower
28:45 that is some Thalassophobia moment you got there.
The P-3 pilot thought he was dropping depth charges, not torps.
I see the Mk 46's behaviour is still as broken as ever.
I know the USN continuously updates the variants and models of their torpedoes, and Sea Power depicts quite a long time ago at this point.
However, does anyone else suspect the US (NATO) torpedoes are drastically under-modeled within Sea Power? Per Wiki: "The Mark 46 torpedo is the backbone of the United States Navy's lightweight anti-submarine warfare torpedo inventory and is the NATO standard."
I simply find it hard to believe that the US was a pioneer in submarine technology and submarine warfare for a majority of its history, particularly from WWII onward, and this is a realistic result depicted within this video and other Sea Power videos. Per my research, multiple sources claim there's an estimated one to three generations of general technological advantage regarding nuclear-powered attack submarines (and specifically their level of stealth maintained while remaining fast, nuclear, and capable) over both the Russians (estimates are likely closer to between 1 and 2 generations) and the Chinese (the US is reportedly closer to 2 or 3 generations ahead of them).
Does anyone else have difficulty believing that the Mark 46 variant depicted within Sea Power (which is only a few variants older than the current Mark 46's deployed on active duty USN boats/ships), that began being manufactured in 1963 (over 60 years of active R&D), that would have naturally been tested hundreds of times during its development, actually performed this poorly in their testing, and was STILL approved for what amounts to many billions in funding to manufacture and deploy this weapon system?
I simply have a difficult time believing the USN and all of its globally acclaimed defense contractors and R&D efforts (in both terms of quality and amount of investment) all failed to develop an anti-submarine torpedo with active sonar that (per Sea Power) literally can't detect an absolute giant metal tube within the water, that also happens to be making a tremendous amount of overall noise as we see the Mark 46 glide by within a few meters of the target, even when heading directly toward the intended target in many cases, before electing to turn away for unexplained reasons (I've seen this when noisemakers weren't even involved).
Also, if that's the case, why would the following countries all purchase and use the Mark 46 in addition to the US?
Australia
Bahrain
Belgium
Brazil
Canada
Chile
Colombia
Croatia
Ecuador
Egypt
France
Germany
Greece
Indonesia
Iran
Israel
Italy
Japan
Kuwait
Mexico
Morocco
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Pakistan
Peru
Philippines
Portugal
Saudi Arabia
South Korea
Spain
Taiwan
Thailand
Turkey
United Arab Emirates
United Kingdom
Not to mention the fact the US has NATO allies and each member nation also has their own respective qualified and capable defense industries to share technology with or enter contracts to co-develop advanced systems. Or the fact that a majority of independent naval analysts rank US submarine technology as the best in the world (or, at the very least, on par with the best in the world). So, why the hell would all of the data point to superiority underwater, with the one exception of the Mark 46 (or other USN torpedoes)? I mean, submarine engineering is advanced and interconnected, so if you can develop an advanced modern submarine, you should also possess all of the necessary knowledge to develop a highly effective advanced torpedo.
You mean except these things never been used against real targets?
First of all alot of factors my friend
And secondly i aint reading all dat(im retarded fr fr)
Geez...
@ I'm not sure about you, but I can easily imagine a torpedo that is sold to that number of countries over six decades has been tested hundreds, if not thousands, of times by now.
That would include remotely piloted small submersibles. You can't develop a weapon without tests; even way back in the 1960s, they would have had, at a minimum, towed targets. As it developed, you would also need additional testing, and they would have done so using more modern-era remotely controlled submersible targets that they can make extremely quiet and also emulate the signature of enemy targets. They have sonar profiles for every possible type of target in the ocean, including details down to the specific ship (their unique sound signature).
Your logic is similar to claiming the F-22 is a pile of crap because it has never made an air-to-air kill.
Would you intercept him?
(I would intercept Raptor, but that's because of HLC, and not my point.)
The torpedo has been tested, ad nauseam. As have all weapons in the US arsenal. If they perform subpar, then that is why there are progressive Mod. However, even if a weapon is determined not to be up to spec, sometimes they are pressed into service anyways. See the Tigerfish as an example.
Now, I humbly suggest your next question be less of an essay, it is quite a lot to read and could easily be pared down to a few sentences.
It seems to me, that AI-Subs in this game are honestly not even trying to evade. Evasive manuevers with 10kn in 300ft depth and no course change, with a bunch of noisemakers is like "ok, please kill me, im not interested in surviving!"
It's so weird to me that that the most basic of orders, like engage submarine from an ASW platform, does not seem to have an algorithm for using the weapon. It constantly drops on top of the target instead of having the target in the seeker cone when the weapon goes active. The depth seems to not be set.
And the ASW is still way better than the air to air.
Yes I'd love more customizeable orders for when air dropping a torpedo. Cold Waters had better controls with torpedoes: search for surface targets, do a snake pattern, that sort of stuff.
The torpedo behavior was a bit odd to me, or was it working as intended. Regardless, a fun video to watch - thanks Stealth.
I love the Oscar bro
"Oscar nomination" 😂
Lol @ 24:55 , WHAT the fucc are you doing . Torpedo was a double agent and made a buisness decision 🤣
How do you kill a whale? Lots of Mk-46s.
On that note. I have to ask. As you are in touch with the developers, do you have an official wishlist of what you think are the things this game needs to improve on. Not necessarily top priority, but something that needs addressing? I only know these things from a game perspective and even though I would eg have a depth information of its target, of course I wouldn't want the game to have something that the real life counterpart did not.
I'm in touch with them every now and then. Recently I addressed just how terrible the plane AI is at the moment. They're aware and AI is on their list of priorities.
when i was hunting Typhoon in cold waters he took 3-4 torps beforfe he died and those were mk48s
Just played it. Fun and quick. I'm going to make a mod that has a Charlie instead of the Oscar. Close enough that it's in missile range.
Enemy subs can’t launch missiles yet. Only torps
Should have played Janes Fleet Command soundtracks in the background instead of Sea Power on this scenario.
Not sure copyright scan on UA-cam would allow that
If any of the weapons in real life perform as bad as these in SP, then imagine how much waste and cost tossed into actual budgets in the real world.
A great scenario for an easy quick video. Just as a warning, the Janes missions are not much of a challenge for a veteran like you. Well done missions though, but all 1 to 2 star difficulty.
Is the Papa in Sea Power? I'm playing a cold waters campaign with it, it's such an odd ship it's fast like an alfa but can't dive deep, has the missiles but not really enough to punch through big fleets and only carries the second tier torpedoes (no 65-76, no wire guides) and you don't have a lot of reloads.
Great Mission
At the time you sunk him, were your ships outside of minimum range? Surprised he didn't launch ASM if so as a last act of vengeance.
The AI cant do that at the moment. So this Oscar was essentially a fat Victor III.
What mod needs to be loaded to get the SH-60 without the anit-ship missile?
I think just the S-70 mod. With NTU they probably get anti ship missiles too
First time I tried the SH-60 off of an OHP it wouldn't launch. Suggestions?
Lol @ the flying fish torpedo. So buggy this game, still needs a lot of work but will be great when done.
I think the Russians made them out of titanium.
Sounding like a complete doofus, how did you deploy the buoys in the grid pattern? Seems like it saves a ton of time
Ctrl + right click. Can also use Alt or both at the same time. Each gives a different spread
@Stealth17Gaming Wonderful, cheers dude!
why why why u always play nato.... make mission where you are oscar and co
Guess you missed the 6 videos before this one where I played Soviet then.
