In rough weather, a helo will drop a landing cable with a hook on the end. A sailor connects the hook to the landing pad.
The helo maintains positive lift, while using its winch to pull it down to the pad.
Known as a Beartrap or HHRSD. Originally developed by the Canadians.
Or alternatively, a RAST system - a massive winch below the flight deck, to pull the helicopter down to the deck.
24:25 Landing Ships on Helicopters does sound really impressive not gonna lie 🤣🤣
I wonder what Russians would think when they start seeing flying ANZAC warships coming at them at 300 knots.
It is, after all, the Australian Navy!
Just another day in the ANZAC Navy!
Hell the Soviets could block off New Zealand with a couple of tug boats seeing how New Zealand doesn’t have a military these days. 😂
Couple of frigates, no airforce and a wickedly outdated army with zero anti air? Oh the tug boats aren't even nessecary!
Well - They do have two relatively modern frigates - its just that no one is interested in serving in the NAVY these days so many ships are idled - But Aotearoa is a modern Fuelling Ship and the NZAF has taken delivery of their military versions of the 738 which do have Anti sub and Anti air armaments
@@rayhughes we're one ship short currently you may have heard 😂
Especially considering we sank one of our own in recent events..
Wouldn't the Russian tug boat need a tug boat to pull it into place?
I swear I'll go to bed after I watch this.
Landing ships on helicopters would CERTAINLY be impressive
@stealth17Gaming Modern DD and Cruisers have a rail mounted dolly that they connect a hook to to drag the Helo straight to the deck in rough seas.
25:41 Conn: “SURFACE THE SHIP !!!”
Thanks for playing my Scenario Stealth! Damn you found my secret sub! Once you realise the class you will see what I had planned ;) BTW I set all the AI skill to ultra so perhaps that does do something considering the sharpshooting going on. Also P3 had harpoons as the Helis are basically an infinite ASW glitch with rearming them and you can't really spam harpoons with the single rail launchers.
An old mil sim I played claimed that helos had a feature that allowed them to emulate the radar signature of a surface ship. If this is modeled, I’d use that as a decoy measure… fly to some useful off-axis location, low hover and light up and see if you can bait out some of those ship-killing missiles.
Blip enhance feature. Its even mentioned in Red Storm Rising. Not a naval aviatior but im sure there has to be some sort of system like that in play. Even it just involved dropping a bunch of radar reflectors and noisemakers in the water to make noise and give a false radar/passive sonar return.
@@zacharysiefer8272if I remember in RSR, they had several helos hover in close proximity to create a radar signature to be significant enough to be "ship size" and then peeled off after baiting a few vampires towards themselves
Do the “Kitty comes to Kamchatka” mission it’s rlly good
I recall exercising with HMAS Perth (D38) in 1970 in South East Asia. At first glance I thought it was a US Navy ship. However I am disappointed to see that in your scenario the NZ Navy and Air Force does not exist seemingly - They did have Rothesay and Leander class frigates (4) at the time up until early, mid 1980's for the Rothesay class and the Mid 1990 for the Leander class- at the time all were equiped with 1x Seacat launcher, 2 x 38 Torpredos tubes, limbo Anti Sub mortars (removed later) and 4.5 Inch guns and the Leanders also carried 2 x Wasp Anti sub helo's. The NZ Air Force had PB8's equipment in anti sub layouts
NZ Navy had the day off for balance purposes :)
Also the minor problem that Leander class frigates are not yet in the base game or, so far as I know, modded into it by kitbashing models. And honestly, ASW frigates equipped in the way of air defense with only what was probably the most outdated point-defense missile in service at the time wouldn't be much use in this scenario except as missile fodder for the Kyndas, assuming they hadn't already been taken out. The Orions might be able to do some ASW-ing, although afaik the RNZAF's Orions weren't equipped to fire antiship missiles so they couldn't be used for that. I think the most credible threat NZDF forces could provide in this scenario would be an air attack by A-4K Skyhawks, especially if they were the Project Kahu upgrade which could fire Maverick missiles.
@taiko1237 Yeah no Leander class and no Daring class yet sadly. I have been trying to make a Daring Class out of a Battle class but still cant get the twin 4.5' mounts to work!
Excellent video, good to see the ANZACs in action .. with their WW1 equipment .. where are the Swordfish ? :D
Sea Power just turned into Red Dragon naval real quick
I was in a helo detachment on a OHP, lots of fun. I worked avionics on SH-60B.
Nice!
I wonder how the ASW will be in the dynamic campaign. Right now mission briefing states submarines and therefore we start dropping buoys like nobody's business, but which would not be sustainable for business as usual.
Very much a side note when the taskforce is searching for the sub Australian navy in real life probably use microphones on the coast as addition to the helicopters due to how close nz is to aus would definitely make it easier
It's not that close lol, the Tasman Sea is like 2000 kilometers wide. And as far as I know NZ doesn't and didn't have any coastal microphone stations.
Yay, Nice to see battles set here down under, what year are you thinking for this scenario?
I think I set it in 87 but roughly 1980's
Its a pity Sea Power isn't set in the modern age. Would be good to see the Royal New Zealand Navy Anzac Class frigates take on the People's Liberation Army Navy Type 054A Frigates.
Love your videos. I trailed off watching for a while as I didn't want to give away the scenario when I played it but I'm taking a break from the game now until the AI is improved.
tell me about it XD - the Air to ground AI SUCKS
@ the “AI” in general sucks. I’d argue to say it isn’t AI at all honestly. More of a script follower that will shoot at something classified as an enemy. It will not independently think.
The Adelaides were to receive a TTAS when their hulls were lengthened but I am told that this never occurred due to budget cuts. I will never use the TAS for the RAN ships.
send one of the DDGs ahead at flank to take out the heli, having them in line abreast is not good coverage....a star formation would work better with FFGs at the back points with towed arrays out, the 2 DDGs on either flank with their Ikara ASW and SM1s plus they are fast and the rest of the FFGs along the center, my 2 bobs worth. Plus shouldn't the P3C have torps and Harpoons??
Thanks for the feedback. I have been experimenting with keeping ships apart and trying new formations. I used to always have overlapping fields of fire but an upload from ryu1940 had me trying spaced out formations. The P3 hard harpoons as I felt ASW could be handled by the helis and considering all the ships had the mk13 I thought it would help overwhelm defences should the sub fail
stealth did show the P3 and it only has 4 Harpoons. not a single torp
@@headshothunt3r414 I live in Adelaide where all the P3C where based (we have P8's now) from what I know of them they can carry Poon's under the wings plus the normal torp loadout too
@@headshothunt3r414 I will fix
@@Wolfe351 okay? and youre telling me this cuz...?
With the Krivaks, wouldn't the signature of one disrupt the other's on radar since your helicopters were directly to the side and only one was off of Emcon?
So it was not a bad idea to launch 7 Anti ship missiles i guess.
Wow
The funny joke is blockading NZ back then wouldn't have done much of anything as realistically it's a farming country that severely overproduces.
Play as the Soviet next time
...playing MSFS2024...won't be long now before we start seeing DCS videos lol!
Jut imagine how it will be in real life when Soviets frigates can't defend itself from anti ship missiles and swimming with power down radars and other electronics. Nicely done, SeaPower Devs Rename the game to the NATO superiority lol.
