I remember this. My friends and the Comanche Nation were so joyous to have him. 6 months later he played "Tonto". It was So humiliating for my Comanche Nation friends. Such a joke. So sad, another step back for us
Subvertia He was already doing that when he was 'adopted'---by ONE FAMILY. He is lying when he says he was adopted by the Comanche Nation. We'd been telling him for a good year not to do it, but he was determined. It flopped.
ysoof groof Yes, we had 'told' him, past tense. Many people from many nations told him not to do it, he did anyway...and it flopped. Yet our kids had to deal once again with being called "Tonto", etc. But he doesn't give a shit, just so long as he gets a paycheque.
For some reason, the white Cherokee thing seems prevalent in the south. When I moved to the south at age 7, I met a white kid who told me their Grandma was Cherokee and I was l like, that's so cool... Then I met more people and almost every white kid I met had a Cherokee grandma. Someone definitely convinced these kids it was true. The next year that stupid Tim McGraw song came out and was everywhere... "I'm an Indian outlaw, half Cherokee and Choctaw..." I still haven't seen any Cherokee Grandmas... So I learned a thing and damn it makes sense. Must not be fun being raised by people who lied to you about God and your Grandmothers... "The Cherokees resisted state and federal efforts to remove them from their Southeastern homelands during the 1820s and 1830s. During that time, most whites saw them as an inconvenient nuisance, an obstacle to colonial expansion. But after their removal, the tribe came to be viewed more romantically, especially in the antebellum South, where their determination to maintain their rights of self-government against the federal government took on new meaning. Throughout the South in the 1840s and 1850s, large numbers of whites began claiming they were descended from a Cherokee great-grandmother. That great-grandmother was often a “princess,” a not-inconsequential detail in a region obsessed with social status and suspicious of outsiders. By claiming a royal Cherokee ancestor, white Southerners were legitimating the antiquity of their native-born status as sons or daughters of the South, as well as establishing their determination to defend their rights against an aggressive federal government, as they imagined the Cherokees had done. These may have been self-serving historical delusions, but they have proven to be enduring. The continuing popularity of claiming “Cherokee blood” and the ease with which millions of Americans inhabit a Cherokee identity speaks volumes about the enduring legacy of American colonialism. Shifting one’s identity to claim ownership of an imagined Cherokee past is at once a way to authenticate your American-ness and absolve yourself of complicity in the crimes Americans committed against the tribe across history."
There is a huge difference between what people say when they say that white person is claiming Cherokee blood, as opposed to someone like myself, who is white, who is actually descended from Shawnee who were adopted into the Cherokee Nation. I don't call myself "Indian" or "Native" or even necessarily Indigenous, even though as am descended, and do qualify for tribal affiliation. For myself it is about knowledge and reconnection, and hard work that needs to be done. One thing we need to understand about human beings is that no matter the culture or ethnicity, when coming into contact with different peoples, lots of folks like to get busy. It's no secret that lots of European people had lots of relations with lots of Indigenous people. What matters to me now is having the right reasons to reconnect, done in the right way. I'm not about any sort of check or other tribal benefits that relate to money or land, because it ain't about that to me. I just want to learn about my family and how we used to be before being fully assimilated.
Just one more reply because I did not address it previously. Cherokee Nation (Oklahoma) as any Indigenous nation, has the sole right to determine membership requirements, and as there was much intermarriage, yes, you're going to see White looking Cherokee citizens. As what is required for enrollment is proof of a lineal ancestor on the Dawes Rolls, this is the final arbiter of affiliation. I just wanted to respond to you to explain that the story of the Indigenous nations and contact with Europeans on this continent is far more complex and nuanced in some cases than your post might otherwise suggest. Because, contrary to what racial materialist philosophies suggest, life is not so black and white, or red. My ancestors mixed with others. And I won't apologize for existing now nor for wanting to be a whole person.
@@PHDWhom I am absolutely not saying anything about people with actual tribal ancestry. I was talking about how and why it became so widespread and popular in the southern US during and post-civil war, (Depp is from Kentucky and later Florida) to claim Cherokee and specifically Cherokee ancestry, despite having none. All of the kids in my story also had Cherokee Grandma's who just happened to be princesses which is complete BS. It was essentially akin to stolen valor, for lack of a better example. And also to even pass that belief down to your children who don't know any better and believe the lie. Definitely not talking about you if you have actual evidence of ancestry and have been accepted as such. 😉😊

May i ask a queation? What makes you an "indian"? Are only full blood real "indians"? What if a full blood is adopted immediately after birth by whites/ asian and grows up in a totally white/asian community...? What if a white/ asian Baby gets adopted by "indians" and gets raised in a totally "indian" community? By which percentage one becomes one an "indian"? I'm from Germany and i wonder...
I know this is a year old but here's some answers: The amount of blood needed too qualify for tribal membership depends on the tribe. I think the most common limit is less than 1/8 but i've even heard of some tribes saying anything less than 1/4 doesn't qualify. Note that these do not necessarily reflect traditional beliefs and customs regarding kinship and identity. As for adoption, due to some systemic disadvantages from a history of colonization and marginalization, most Native folks are pretty poor and might choose to focus limited funds on surviving current hardships over adopting a child. When Native couples do adopt, it's been my experience that they prioritize Native children. There are a few reasons for this. State care in the US is a difficult experience for all the kids in it, and racism doesn't do non-white kids any favors. Depression rates are very high among young Native men and Native girls have a disproportionately high chance of experiencing sexual assault/abuse. The couple looking to adopt may have had these exact points in mind when deciding adoption was a good fit for them. "Nativeness" is a tricky thing because, well, the US and Canadian governments have been trying to wipe us out for a long time and they've gotten pretty close before. My grandma was full-blooded Inupiaq and her first language was King Island Inupiatun. She ended up marrying a white man and associated speaking her first language with punishment so much that she couldn't bring herself to teach her kids (my mom and uncles) our language. She died before I or any of my siblings were born. My mom also ended up marrying a white man and did her best to raise us in the culture and share the few words she remembered from her mom. I know my eskimo name and what it means. All the rest of the cultural stuff I've had to figure out on my own. I still went to a Native school and graduated in regalia. I'm even the only one of my siblings trying to learn the language.

Maybe this will change someday. I still have hope that it can, even if it is a foolish thing for me to believe - and perhaps it is. Thanks for sharing this insight, Mr. Gonzalez. It is appreciated.
