RIP ShakeDry. Long live ShakeDry!
What I need to improve my cycling performance is to cycle more, I've been super lazy lately...
LMAO
Love the video and the crazy angles but what's the sunshine reggae mix you played it's 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’m trying to find the song title as well. Shazam couldn’t identify it.
Switched to an oval ring this fall, and I really like it. Adjustment period was about 10 minutes, and the biggest difference I can feel is more consistent traction when it gets rough, and knee pain seems to be completely gone. I’m going to run them another year and see, but so far I dig them.
I have Absolute Black oval on the MTB. It really helps on spinny steep tech climbing, especially when roots/chunk is present.
Next step Ovals on the MTB!
The name of the last song, please siiiiir
Been using rotor rings for 5 or 6 years. My original 110 bcd rings lasted almost 20k miles, but by the end we’re dropping shifts. Replacement rings like you have are no problems.
The biggest thing I notice is that I can bridge gaps notably easier. I like them.
My only complaint is that I think they caused an early death to a sram red rear derailleur because of the teeny tiny little motion the cage makes on every pedal Revolution did not play nice with how they built that derailleur. After 12k miles the cage broke off at the pivot.
I'm not quite sure what the measure of improved efficiency was. Did you ever say? Do your knees feel better? The fact that it was easy to transition doesn't make it better, does it? If you can't really tell the difference, then why switch?
This is what we called Bio pace back in the 80's
Love me some Bio Pace
Yep, my brother's Dave Scott ironman has biopace!
"If I was told there was one thing I could add to my bike to increase efficiency, smooth pedal stroke, and reduce pain on my knees and hips? I would say..." yeah, a new rider.
LOL! Those are on Aisle 6...left hand side
I have used both kinds of rings. Started running oval rings way back in the day on an early Gary Fisher Hoo Koo e Koo. Of course I'm older than dirt, so I don't remember how well they worked. I do remember that they were called "bio-pace" chain rings, and they came with the bike. I also remember that the bike got spindled and mutilated after being hit by a car on the first day that my son was a bike messenger.
the bio pace rings where made incorrectly from what I hear, they where in the wrong position, then they where scrapped, then someone realized if you rotate oval to a different spot they actually do work. fun fact. something shimano got wrong.
How do you navigate the copyright for the music you use? Or do you just sacrifice the UA-cam as revenue?
Sometimes your the Hammer, sometimes your the Nail.
Love the Gore shoe covers. I was riding with a Gore jacket today and someone asked me if it was in reference to author Gore Vidal. I of course said yes.
LMAO what a strange question to ask. I always like thinking its a ref to GORE FILMS/MUSIC
been using oval on my fixie for years - I can't understand why more people don't do the same.
Been using q rings since 2006 and they work great for me, no knee pain and have tinkered dialed my position where I am pain free riding. And yes, they do lessen lactic acid buildup and I love the modularity of the rings and crankarms, they are the best cranks on the market. I recently ordered the carbon aldhu crankarms and will match them with a hambini bottom bracket for this spring can't wait!
This is what Im talkin about! Appreciate the report!
I'm using multiple setups but my ancient 30/38/48 biopace triples are king of my collection of commuter's (rotated 72° from shimanos original orientation)
Never felt a difference when using oval rings and when switching between bikes to round rings and oval back and forth.
But what definitely feels better is using an appropriately sized front ring(s) for the riding you do and the fitness you have.
Put an absoluteblack oval on during the summer. Adaptation period was a few pedal strokes, but I can’t say I’ve noticed any difference.
I feel you ;)
Yup, same here.
Solid ride for those wintery conditions.
Wow big ride for winter temps✌️
You said it!
Round rings. I remember using Shimano "bio" rings on an older pedal package. I like round rings.
The glove box....every bike should have one 🤓
I completely agree!
I had to swap my front MTB chainring anyway so I'd tried oval and it messed with Shimano XT RD, switched back to normal and it is working fine again...
It's a pity that the first generation 2 in power cant be converted to the direct mount version... So gonna need to spend 1k more if the first generation ones wont work with 12speed shimano..... :/ :'(
Big day. Slogging is life. Had a GT with biopace. Not a fan. my .02
If bicycle relies on government electricity then it isn’t a bicycle for me anymore. If you have to charge it from the socket then thank you bicycle concept is partially ruined.
Fyi still riding the 16%ovalized QXL rings🥰 effin love them
Dude, so many miles for such a chilly day. I think that oval rings are a great idea, but do not own any.
oval have sense if You have on all bikes. Most harmful to the knees is change between oval and regular rings
I’ve got some biopace rings on my 90’s Diamondback…
Round-ringer here but don't doubt the oval business... just never tried 'em.
Looks like a great route. What's the name of the taco place in Vernonia you stopped at?
Did you know that you can use the Rotor powermeter to fine tune the orientation of the Q-ring? ;-)
Vintage BioPace for life‼️ 🤙😂 #xbiking
Hey Dustin, any future rides ye ol FergDawg this year?
Would you say its one ring to rule them all? Would you throw it into a volcano?
What in the name of everything holy is the amazing song at @7:30 - @8:30 or so?
My experience with oval rings; I use them on most of my single chainring bikes. You don't "notice" them when you first switch over, but you definitely feel the difference when you switch back. Moving from a 40t oval ring back to 40t round ring, it immediately feels like you are riding in a tougher gear.
Another thing I've noticed with oval rings is my PR's climbing all over town are better. Certain climbs that I've targeted over the years... I PR them almost immediately with oval rings. I could be just pedaling harder, but the results are there!
I've seen enough oval rings cause front shifting issues on road bikes to not even bother putting them on my road bike. YMMV, but most systems I've seen it just causes a few extra headaches. From what I've read, the advantages of the oval shape reduce as your chainring gets larger, so the effectiveness seems to work best with small rings and slower cadence efforts, like climbing steep shit on your mountain bike.
So, you should get a small oval ring for one of your MTBs and do the test again. I bet you'll notice it way more!
Grant,
This was was great intel! thank you. Now I want to get an oval on the MTB to see what I can find!
More efficient? Me thinks the pot smoking is taking a toll.
Whats the route for this?
IKR... what is that paved bike path they were on
Where do you stand on Roundtine vs Ovaltine?
Great choice of music and ride partner.
Ron gets bonus points for the Smiths reference
goooooood🗼
love seeing my daily commute in your vids
I’m on round boiii, loved this video!
I rode BioPace in the 90s...
My rings are more of a spiky shape.
Is that one thing steroids? lol.
Oval chain rings are a gimmick.
Justin, I ride 52 X 18 fixed oval in PDX....have to watch 4 chain stretch.....otherwise Fab👌
Currently both my bikes aren't oval, but I want to try oval on my trailcountry HT when it's time to get a newl chainring.
I should have know you had egg rings on more then one rig!
@@EverythingsBeenDone oh I don't yet. Eventually will try it.
You can't beat this channel......ITS IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!
I ride osymetrics rings
Hi -- I used the oval rings on a Mt. Bike back in the 90's for a year--didn't see any real difference than regular rings, so never went back--YMMV
I slapped an Absolute Black oval chainring on my SSCX bike and climbed 4000'+ in 17 miles at a gravel race in Quilcene, WA. Knowing my fitness and ability. I can say that these helped me push through my maniacal decision to run SS with minimal problems.
Arguably, you’re more likely to have a beneficial reduction in knee pain, and even genital pain (reducing saddle sores) is to just lower your seat. Most people run their saddle too high. Lower your seat by 5mm people. Try it for a month. You may find you’re more comfy
I got a 38t oval ring from absolute black for my surly strag that had a 42 on 1x11
I’m in chicago n it def helped me climb in Seattle
It’s just right for my commute on the lakefront which is pretty flat but always windy as hell
Round rings for me. I’ve heard the ovals are nice for climbing and MTB. 😅
@DustinKlein what are the dimensions of your bike storage shed? Looking to build something similar this winter.
Been riding absolute black sub compact ovals on the road bike since 2019. These allowed me to finish a 7 stage race through the alps. I will never take them off.
More oval rings please! Run oval on my full Sus Cannondale love it for little hump over the bump.
The thing about ovals is no one can tell the difference until hours/days after a ride. If you had post ride knee pain you will notice you reduced it. If you never had pain you can't tell.
Unless you ride high cadence and measure oxygen intake and heart rate you'll never see a performance increase. The effort you put into the pedals is the same, just distributed differently.
Read the reneherse flexy VS stiff frame article. Counter intuitive, but flexy is faster but raises heart rate. Even though you lose watts you gain overall body efficiency
I've used both Absolute Black and Rotor Q rings for many years now. I started using them when I was recovering from a broken leg to reduce the stress on my knee (which worked perfectly). I now only use Q rings, as all my bikes have rotor cranks.
Was going to ask what pants you were rocking, but you're one step ahead of me in the description. Thanks Dustin!
I switched to ovals a couple of years ago on my old specialized globe with flat bars. Once riding with the 2” mtn bike tires on a single track, I was caught in a down pour that turned the trail into a muddy mess in minutes, but I never lost traction.
The oval rings feel like they smoothed out the torque for better traction and climbing. That bike will never go without them.
The music! 💞
I had oval chainrings on a 30+ year old Gary Fisher-loved them!
I’ve used oval during two years. There was a subtle difference in pedaling smoothness. I had much better results going from 175mm to 165mm cranks (round).
Can’t believe you’ve never tried after all this time;) glad ya did, good show Batman 🎉
climbs😁😅
I ran oval for a while. Lots of fun climbing but I do enjoy round now more.
any recommendations on the front light? I don't think my current light could last 6 hours of continuous use on low power.
I noticed the difference most when climbing with the oval. That’s why I have them on my MTBs and SSs.
i have inherited q rings on a road bike - honestly can;t tell the difference other than sometimes shifting is a little drop-chainy
Heck yeah nice review! ❤ love seeing the double! 💵💵
I ride round rings, but I have been thinking of trying some oval ones.
I dont run either, I ride a dodecagon ring.
🤣😂🐕
Spanish tech!!! Well done Dustin
Slick idea with the tape on the pump. #PricelessProTips
Vacillatingly fascinating cadence...🚴🚴
I switched to ovals long time ago on my mtb and gravel. love it !
Will these fit my track bike?
Currently round rings on all my bikes, I am swaping out the cranks on my Rove for Rival cranks with an AARN chain ring though.
That sounds fun! New parts always exciting.
Hilarious. Well done. 🎉
I’m running wolf tooth ovals on both gravel & mtb. I noticed the difference for about 1-2 months. Now, I don’t notice unless I pedal a conventional chain ring
To me the difference between oval & conventional rings is that the oval feels like it finishes the hardest part of the pedal stroke “sooner”. It’s just a little easier getting over the top when turning the cranks under say a climbing load. There does seem to be a perceptible increase in traction on both bikes when climbing on dirt too.
Solid ride‼️ 💯💪👍👍👌🤙🤜🤛
Regret Mitigation.
Bio pace!
Training
Feels more like Straining 🤣
I'm a fan of the oval, I think it makes a noticeable, albeit marginal, difference. And if you're a retro grouch who dislikes anything new, don't buy one.
Power meter is sad gear, find something else like fun o meter
plus wait to break rear mech and realize you can't go singlespeed to go back home with oval shit. ^^
@lazyac_ Not true. Plenty of people ride oval chainrings on single speeds. A 36T round chainring has the same circumference as a 36T oval. You are assuming that if the long axis of the oval is horizontal then the chain would need to be longer but it doesn’t because now the vertical axis is shorter. Turn the cranks 90 degrees and now the horizontal axis is shorter and the vertical axis is longer and the length of chain is the same. At any position of the cranks the relationship between the vertical axis and the horizontal axis remains the same. As one gets longer the other gets shorter and chain length remains constant. The truth is, oval chainrings are more beneficial on single speeds than geared bikes as you try to turn over those higher gear ratios on climbs.
@@kad1017 hard to understand ^^ but i get it, i still need to see it, it so hard to set single speed when rear mech is dead in the first place that is confusing for me to immagine it as simple with oval chainring.
