    Switched to an oval ring this fall, and I really like it. Adjustment period was about 10 minutes, and the biggest difference I can feel is more consistent traction when it gets rough, and knee pain seems to be completely gone. I’m going to run them another year and see, but so far I dig them.

    Been using rotor rings for 5 or 6 years. My original 110 bcd rings lasted almost 20k miles, but by the end we’re dropping shifts. Replacement rings like you have are no problems.
    The biggest thing I notice is that I can bridge gaps notably easier. I like them.
    My only complaint is that I think they caused an early death to a sram red rear derailleur because of the teeny tiny little motion the cage makes on every pedal Revolution did not play nice with how they built that derailleur. After 12k miles the cage broke off at the pivot.

    I'm not quite sure what the measure of improved efficiency was. Did you ever say? Do your knees feel better? The fact that it was easy to transition doesn't make it better, does it? If you can't really tell the difference, then why switch?

    I have used both kinds of rings. Started running oval rings way back in the day on an early Gary Fisher Hoo Koo e Koo. Of course I'm older than dirt, so I don't remember how well they worked. I do remember that they were called "bio-pace" chain rings, and they came with the bike. I also remember that the bike got spindled and mutilated after being hit by a car on the first day that my son was a bike messenger.

      the bio pace rings where made incorrectly from what I hear, they where in the wrong position, then they where scrapped, then someone realized if you rotate oval to a different spot they actually do work. fun fact. something shimano got wrong.

    Been using q rings since 2006 and they work great for me, no knee pain and have tinkered dialed my position where I am pain free riding. And yes, they do lessen lactic acid buildup and I love the modularity of the rings and crankarms, they are the best cranks on the market. I recently ordered the carbon aldhu crankarms and will match them with a hambini bottom bracket for this spring can't wait!

    Never felt a difference when using oval rings and when switching between bikes to round rings and oval back and forth.

    My experience with oval rings; I use them on most of my single chainring bikes. You don't "notice" them when you first switch over, but you definitely feel the difference when you switch back. Moving from a 40t oval ring back to 40t round ring, it immediately feels like you are riding in a tougher gear.
    Another thing I've noticed with oval rings is my PR's climbing all over town are better. Certain climbs that I've targeted over the years... I PR them almost immediately with oval rings. I could be just pedaling harder, but the results are there!
    I've seen enough oval rings cause front shifting issues on road bikes to not even bother putting them on my road bike. YMMV, but most systems I've seen it just causes a few extra headaches. From what I've read, the advantages of the oval shape reduce as your chainring gets larger, so the effectiveness seems to work best with small rings and slower cadence efforts, like climbing steep shit on your mountain bike.
    So, you should get a small oval ring for one of your MTBs and do the test again. I bet you'll notice it way more!

    The thing about ovals is no one can tell the difference until hours/days after a ride. If you had post ride knee pain you will notice you reduced it. If you never had pain you can't tell.
    Unless you ride high cadence and measure oxygen intake and heart rate you'll never see a performance increase. The effort you put into the pedals is the same, just distributed differently.
    Read the reneherse flexy VS stiff frame article. Counter intuitive, but flexy is faster but raises heart rate. Even though you lose watts you gain overall body efficiency

    I switched to ovals a couple of years ago on my old specialized globe with flat bars. Once riding with the 2” mtn bike tires on a single track, I was caught in a down pour that turned the trail into a muddy mess in minutes, but I never lost traction.
    The oval rings feel like they smoothed out the torque for better traction and climbing. That bike will never go without them.

      To me the difference between oval & conventional rings is that the oval feels like it finishes the hardest part of the pedal stroke “sooner”. It’s just a little easier getting over the top when turning the cranks under say a climbing load. There does seem to be a perceptible increase in traction on both bikes when climbing on dirt too.

    • @kad1017
      @kad1017 Рік тому +2

      @lazyac_ Not true. Plenty of people ride oval chainrings on single speeds. A 36T round chainring has the same circumference as a 36T oval. You are assuming that if the long axis of the oval is horizontal then the chain would need to be longer but it doesn’t because now the vertical axis is shorter. Turn the cranks 90 degrees and now the horizontal axis is shorter and the vertical axis is longer and the length of chain is the same. At any position of the cranks the relationship between the vertical axis and the horizontal axis remains the same. As one gets longer the other gets shorter and chain length remains constant. The truth is, oval chainrings are more beneficial on single speeds than geared bikes as you try to turn over those higher gear ratios on climbs.

    • @lazyac_
      @lazyac_ Рік тому

      @@kad1017 hard to understand ^^ but i get it, i still need to see it, it so hard to set single speed when rear mech is dead in the first place that is confusing for me to immagine it as simple with oval chainring.
