    Marquetry is the art of assembling thin pieces of wood together to form a decorative pattern or picture. Then that final piece can be applied on top of larger workpiece or inlayed into it. I've always wanted to try it and I'm really glad I pushed myself to make this project. I'm happy with how the pattern turned out. Hopefully you enjoy the video!

    What fine scroll saw skills ! And incredible patience. Absolutely beautiful, thanks for the links, especially for those beefy hinges. Really enjoyed this, I must attempt some version of this at some point😎 !

      It took me ALL DAY to glue that pattern together. I have another video on step by step installing box hinges if you think it'll help.

      I've used wenge a lot for scroll saw work but I'm loving it for boxes. The puzzle box I made is wenge and looks beautiful.

    Love it! I picked up a bunch of small veneer pieces at a garage sale and haven’t known what to do with them. Thanks for the video. You’re a good teacher! Only thing that threw me off is you saying that you’re going to “cut this in half” when you are cutting them in two unequal pieces. I thought your box would be funny looking if the lid was the same depth as the bottom. Thank you again!

    Absolutely amazing! You have a seriously steady hand to cut those straight lines with a scroll saw. You also have a great eye for selecting the wood species that contrast yet compliment each other, great job!

    • @NewtonMakes

      Cutting fast helps me to keep it as straight as possible. I'm already ruminating on some future project ideas.

      @@NewtonMakes If you didn’t have a scroll saw with a tiny blade, what type of saw and blade would you have used to make the cuts?

    I have just finished a " marquetry " picture of an Italian lakeside scene . There was a gap of 52 years since I started it.
    As this video shows the making of a "pattern" in wood veneers, I believe the correct description should be "parquetry" as seen in parquet flooring.

  • @pshadyyx

    Interesting to see that even hand-sawn stripes go glue back together - but I guess you'd have harder times when using wider stripe in between. That thin and bendable veneer paid off. But still - did you have to somehow corect the rhombus shapes before gluing them together? I can't believe they could have fit so well together when hand-sawn...

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому

      No, everything fit together without any issues.

    How did you get such straight cuts with the scroll saw? Came out amazing!
    There was a time in my life that I only wore argyle socks :)

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому

      Hopefully that time is now. My cuts get straighter when I cut fast. The slower I cut the more they veer off.

      @@NewtonMakes haha that time was when I was a full time touring drummer in punk rock bands…think I have a few pairs in a box somewhere.

  • @wokohedgehogs

    Superb job, absolutely awesome. How many man-hours in total do you think you spent on it. I only ask because if you saw that box in a shop for sale you’d be shocked at it’s price. It’s only when you see how much effort it takes to make something as beautiful as that you realise the value (not price) of something hand made by a craftsman.

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому

      Probably three full days to make it. I film so it's difficult to come up with a more precise number.

    • @wokohedgehogs
      @wokohedgehogs 2 роки тому

      @@NewtonMakes so if you worked on it six hours a day for three days, even at $15 per hour that’s $270 not including materials 😳. That’s my point.
