Let’s gooo! I was just able to land the 24’ BS Rye and can’t wait to crack it! I can see why people go nuts over the toasted rye, because the flavor is incredible, but it’s not my preferred profile. Cheers 🥃
I just picked up this bottle for 140 out the door and I sipped on it while watching your review. I enjoy toasted products and I enjoy ryes but I will not pick this bottle up again even though I like it. I do not like the mint or dill that I find in the flavors, however, I would like to taste the bourbon edition of this bottle.
I like the bottle too, but the profile is pretty unique. Once the bottle has some airtime, the pours really sweetened up. Now my bottle is a burnt Werther’s Original with some light rye spice. I haven’t tasted anything like it before and really stands out from all my other bottles now. I haven’t had the toasted bourbon, but I had the toasted sour mash and it was alright… I really wish that bottle was higher than 86 proof. Cheers!
So what flavors are “toasted profile” for you? I’ve heard marshmallow, syrup, things like that, but the only note you mention is toasted oak. Just curious, you seemed a little underwhelmed. I may have a line in a bottle but not sure I’ll get it, certainly not over SRP
Good question - so the marshmallow sweetness wasn’t really coming across for me. Sometime the confectionery sugar flavor combined with a toasted profile can get the marshmallow syrup note, but I wasn’t getting that here. Some toasted products have more of a char flavor and by toasted oak I was trying to convey a much more faint variant of that char flavor. It didn’t come across as burnt, but more of a warm oak flavor. For example the 23’ Shenks had a unique woody profile and the toasted fry was a warmer version of that. This review was the neck pour and hopefully more sweetness comes out with some air. I know Michters is know for the toasted marshmallows, but maybe that note is more prevalent in the toasted bourbon and sour mash. Maybe the rye spice was hindering me for picking out that note or not. The toasted rye is a really good bottle, but I wouldn’t reach far over MSRP from my first impression.
Do you like it enough to feel like you need a backup? If it was 150.00 on a shelf would you buy it again over something else ( and if yes, because of rarity or your actual preference)? I'm just starting to gauge/realize whiskey qualities/flavors don't necessarily equate or correlate with high secondary prices. Everyone's palette is different, but I honestly would never buy EH Taylor Small batch again for anything over 40 (which won't happen). To me, it's just not worth that. Whereas, I would pay secondary pricing on Stagg bottles ( which is crazy right now). I ask because I've been interested in these toasted, and the 10 yr bottles from Michters. I'd like to hear your opinion on them.
Great question. If the Toasted Rye was on the shelf for $150, I would buy it again, but more for its trade value and rarity than actual preference. I think the bottle is solid at retail, but doesn’t drink ‘special’ enough for me to pay much north of that. I do like this bottle, but would drink the M10 Bourbon over this if I had the choice. I’ve had the toasted sour mash and that bottle didn’t do anything for me and I do like the toasted rye more and I though a few drops of water really opened up the toasted sweetness. The toasted rye is not a 300-400+, but the 2023 M10 bourbon is out of this world good and I would pay up for another one of those.
Hey man, great video. I just acquired the toasted rye. I am not a big rye fan, however a friend is willing to take it off my hands. I am really torn. Is this a bottle you could see someone who doesn't love ryes, enjoying? I have heard this might be a "top five" rye, and in that case, maybe it is worth holding on to?
Are you trading it or just selling it? I think this is a solid bottle, but in terms of “top 5”, I probably wouldn’t put it in that category personally. The KY Owl Rye, Michter’s 10 Rye, JD SBBP Rye, Sagamore 8yr Rye, and Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye are personal current Top 5’s for me. I have a Four Gate Toasted Rye that I would probably give a slight edge too over the Michter’s toasted rye. Don’t think this is me putting down the bottle at all, because it is really good and the rarity plus Michters historically producing well loved toasted products adds to the draw to this bottle. This bottle doesn’t have a very rye dominant profile, so it would be more appealing to a non rye drinker… for me I would probably try to trade it for something you are interested in, if you are on the fence. I don’t think you will be disappointed in the bottle, but if you don’t like the normal barrel proof rye, then you might not like this. The bottle looks sweet and is a great addition to any collection.
I never see allocated Michter's in Ohio. I usually drive an hour south to N-KY. I agree, a little oxidation will make that even better. Great find, congratulations!
Thank you! One hour is a very doable drive for some bourbon hunting! I rarely add water to pours, but I tried 3 drops the other night and it really sweetened up the pour. Cheers!
Michters BS rye my #1 🥃😋 toasted rye is ok

Good to know, thanks for the additional thoughts, I’ll definitely keep that in mind if I can pick one of these up this week. Cheers.
@@jreezy70 best of luck!
Nice review. Glad you were able to add it to your collection.
Thank you! The pour really improved with a few drops of water and hopefully the bottle will continue to evolve with some airtime.

For me, the Barrel strength is favored over the toasted barrel strength. But both are very pleasurable.
I would agree with you there. I would probably reach for the standard barrel proof rye more than the toasted, but I do really enjoy the toasted.

uuuuhhhh do you have an Abraham Bowman bottle???!!!!
I wish - I haven’t been lucky enough to win one of those yet…. I have the John J. Bowman Cask Strength Bach 1 & 2.
