Pichu tried too hard, is the problem. Reminds me of the story of when they were designing 'baby Yoda' for The Mandalorian. They said their first designs were way too cute, and they ended up making him uglier and uglier until he was just the right amount of ugly and cute. I can guarantee that if they'd made him too cute he wouldn't have been nearly as popular as he ended up being. Not that pikachu is ugly, just that there's such a thing as trying too hard to make something cute that actually sabotages the perceived cuteness.
The Pawmi line is...something. Especially because Pawmot will bust your gut clean open and feel nothing, especially if you roll an Ability Patch in post-game...

I agree. That's one of the reasons I love the Goodra line so much. It starts out cute, and stays cute, despite becoming a badass once it's fully evolved. The Pawmi line has that same appeal, only it stays small. Not that I'm saying everything that starts cute should stay cute, only that more Pokemon should stay cute.
I think some things should become even more monstrous while others should stay the same or even become prettier or cuter. For the most part though you want consistency. You don't want your adorable little buddy to become a Gyarodos level monster outta nowhere. Losing the original design is the big issue.
