- We thought it would be fun to sit and rewatch one of our first videos where we talk about our feelings and experiences when moving to Denmark in 2018. It has been a while since any of us had seen it, so it was cool to have a look back and see how things have changed.

We are happy you guys are here, and giving another point of view of our own country. I can imagine it must have been a challenge for Maya at 14, I hope she will get a good experience at University in Denmark, it's not US College, but it's still pretty fun though 😉
Force yourselves to speak danish as possible. I moved here from Canada 23 years ago and within the first year I realized how important the language is. And pro tip, try and sound danish. What I mean is, no matter how weird the sounds coming out of your mouth sound to you, that is how danish people speak. You really have to get out of your comfort zone to lear proper pronunciation. I am not going to lie. It took me maybe 4 or 5 years, but now people can’t hear that I’m not danish and I think that is a good thing.
It is very impressive to sound native in just 4-5 years, especially in a language with guttural sounds so foreign to English speaking mannerisms. Kudos!
At the end of the day, moving abroad is always a challenge. I always expected to live and work in Denmark all my life but ended up with a career that has been outside Denmark since 1990. Like in your case, it was difficult in the beginning but moving around to various countries, working there and learning new cultures and people has been an exciting experience for me. I regret nothing even though I always miss Denmark now and then.
It's nice to hear that you have gotten to the point where you feel more comfortable and home in Denmark today.

With the connotation in mind, it's almost like foreigner would translate to "fremmed" (stranger) - it's definitely negatively loaded, just like it is in english.
Oh Maya, I so feel with you on the whole trying to fit in with the kids, and missing the life you had...I moved from Denmark to Canada at age 11 and was dropped straight into grade 5 in the public school system. Mind you, I didn't just have to learn english on the fly, but they were expecting me to pick up french pretty quick as well (french never really stuck...LOL). I came back to DK when I was 23 and had my 5 year old son with me...and he even had a bit of a hard time with the language in the beginning
👏 Great video. German here, I love the idea of multiple lifes. Like having two (or more) homes, your country of birth and the chosen one.
I'm glad you found your place to live. And an extra thumbs up goes to Maya for keeping her head up, managing the homesickness and all the European oddities. 👍
You're a great addition to Denmark! Don't be shy about the language, you'll learn, just work on your vowels and you'll be ok :)

It is very impressive to listen to your experience of going here, especially that Maya is willing to speak out about the life as a teenager. We Danes can learn a lot from it, in our way of interacting with people coming here from abroad. You really add value to our society. Hope to see you some time when I'm in Lyngby. The 'international vs foreigner' is quite interesting. I guess I never saw it that way, because moving to the States was a decision made out of love for my wife. She just couldn't settle in Denmark and felt quite unhappy. The process of acquiring the visa, getting sponsored, getting rid of our possessions, selling the house we owned, the vehicles, camper, all over more than a year, was all a very interesting 'journey', but I was always aware that I'm a foreigner over here..
I think from now on, I will try to see myself as an International, thanks!

Which is only like 6% of the population on the earth or close to that. It's a struggle even for a Danish citizen to be allowed to live with your partner who's outside Schengen and especially EU (Which is only around 9% of the humans in the world)
@@nobewayo % of humans is an interesting metric.🙂 With the Schengen Area in Europe we have a great privilege to easily move to work/study. Of course, traveling outside the continent for work/study is much harder. That's why the Schengen Area was enacted - to make life easier for people to pursue their dreams. 🇪🇺👍

Do your gymnasium not hosting a gallafest in 3.g? Most gymnasiums do a promelike party called Gallafest for their oldest students. People pair up as "prome dates" and go to the party together. Most students arrive in cool cars, Tandem bikes or other funny ways, eat, dance a special kind of dance called: Le Lanciers and party!
Les Lanciers or The Lancers is a square dance, a variant of the Quadrille, a set dance performed by four couples, particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a composite dance made up of five figures or tours, each performed four times so that each couple dances the lead part. It exists in many variants in several countries.
Widespread though it was throughout Europe, Les Lanciers became less fashionable by the beginning of the 20th century. It has survived as a popular dance in Denmark to the present day,[1] having been introduced from England in 1860. The Danish dance took its current form before the 1st World War. From the bourgeoisie of Copenhagen it spread through dancing schools in provincial towns and through the landed gentry.[2] It is danced at court,[3] at many university and school gaudies, and at countless private functions.

I think it was hard to move from Copenhagen to Struer when I was 17 so can't imagine how hard it must be to move from one country to another - that being said I've watched most of your videos and I'm impressed by your attitude and your effort to adapt to our country and I'm happy that you enjoy your stay. Danes are not always easy to get to know but once you get to know us we are pretty easy to be around!

Maya, Maya....sure prom is an event, but you will be going to parties with your Gymnasium friends (regardless of Covid-19) and then there are the final weeks of Gymnasium, including 'the ride!' 😉🤣 ie: remember your 'dry' vacation this winter, it will be but a memory

No doubt that it must be hard for a 14 yo to "loose"/leave everything behind. What I also think is that the proces can give one many life lessons. One learns how vulnerable everything you take for granted is, and if you in your life should come in a situation were you unchoosen loose everything, you have the experience that you will manage to create a new good life again.
And this is a really cool video, I love your creativity in the subjects you choose from video to video :D
And yes, you have got a lot more camara training since then xD
Thanks for saying that, we work pretty hard trying to come up with new creative ideas. Sometimes they are a bit different than the normal content, but that helps make it fun :). Our goal is for people to tune in never knowing what to expect...except that they will enjoy whatever they see.

I actually think Maja would be great as a tourist guide, since she speaks english and danish and knows danish culture quite well by now and she travelled a lot and are used to communicate. During summer many danish tourist actractions are hiring young people, usually students for this kind of jobs, just saying :)
For someone who has been travelling in your home country Big Time (i.e. a proud member of 'The All 50 States Club' :-)), it is just so positive, refreshing and even life-affirming to follow you in your "new" life here among us Danes. We are not always easy to socialize with, I know..; but we are certainly glad to have people like U3 here! Keep up the good work with your channel.
"Soaking in the moment" is just brilliant.
That is the most accurate translation or description of the Danish concept of "hygge" I have ever heard.
Hygge = soaking in the moment.
That's a nice way to put it, it translates really well, I think.

This is one of your better videos, because it has a lot of substance and are so personal . And for sure you have all grown as persons. One of the things I would like to hear more about is how is your Danish speaking going especially Miranda and Joshua’s since I have no doubt that Maya’s is by now quit “danish” . I am also quite impressed by the fact that Joshua has taken it into his appearance indoors not to where a hat. Thanks again for the entertainment true the last one and a half year, my have you “moved” a long way.
Thanks!! Miranda is actually going to do a video about her danish pretty soon. As for my hat, I am wearing it right now…in my house :). If I do or don’t have it on during a video has to do with what I am up to that day, not because I feel differently about wearing it inside or on camera :).

I appreciate your honesty, and feel for you when I hear your thoughts from 18 months ago. I admire you for having the courage to uproot and start over in a “foreign” country. The fact that you feel at home today and have found peace with many of the challenges is good to hear. You remind us all to be more open and acknowledge how difficult it is to find a place in our close knit communities.

Very interesting points. As others here have also pointed out, and you sort of indicated, it can be difficult to make friends here, but if you, as you all have done, have put in the effort, to be a part of society, you also get the rewards. And don't worry about the language too much, it takes a long time learn our super difficult language, don't be afraid to ask us to fill in the words you're drawing a blank on, or tell us to slow down when speaking. And moving to a far away country is a monumental task, a shame it has to be so difficult, quite brave of you all to take on that challenge.
Denmark has the words "udlænding" and "fremmed" - the first says from outside the country, but in my mind "fremmed" is much worse because it literally means foreign where "udlænding" might as well be someone living about 5 km away in Malmø.
Hello, you Youngs - Thanks for all your videos, I speak Danish with a American woman who work on university Aarhus as a professor. Now she is in USA where she also works at a university in Philadelphia. We have spoken Danish for nearly 5 years on Skype.

I love hearing how you have evolved as humans acclimating to a new envirement. Especially since i have no personal experience with internationally people who moved to Denmark.

There is a difference between a foreigner and an International.
The foreigner will always bee a stranger. The international wil the integration and the "us together" thing and is not afraid of teaching others new things.
So I feel you when you say. I am an international.
I really enjoyed this video. It makes me think about the pro’s and con’s of moving abroad and especially in how are us danes in welcoming other nationalities. Are we thinking of “foreingers” as ex-pats from somewhere or are we looking at you as “new-danes”?
We might be tight to get into a comfortzone with, but if we value a relationship we’ll litterally crawl through fire and brimstones to help this friend.
But being able to, and interested in, speaking our shared language is a tough cookie. As a newcomer the spoken language here must be hell on earth. Unpronouncable, BUT, if you trust us enough, and remember, that we’re not laughing of, but laughing with, you, then it will come as a breeze.

As a Danish man with a Nigerian wife, I think another good advice when moving here is to find couples where one is international and one is Danish. Preferably someone who's been here for some years. None of what you're saying is surprising to me. Because I already know what my wife went trough her first year(s) her. If any of my "foreign" friends ask for advice about living here and where to start, I'm pretty good at answering them, and so is my wife, because we know what it's like. I even prefer international friends over Danish friends today. First of all because I like to hear what people think about the Danish culture from an outside perspective, but I also learn a lot about myself hearing it from a different viewpoint.
of course its hard to leave everything u know behind, add in the laungish and the culture being differnt its near imposible. im glad u had the bravery to jump and the strength to stay.
Hello again, I moved to germany got work immidiatly, but it was really hard exactly as you say. so I understand you . I also lived a long time in Scotland , that was a bit easyer lol as I had my boyfriend and his family.

I have so much respect for you moving to a new country (continent). But you parents made a well-considered decision, that hopefully worked out 😐 !? Being a "Military" brat, I got used to moving around (though only in DK and Germany). It was super Hard every time, saying bye to friends and meeting new ones. So I have to give Maya most of my respect. She didn't get to choose, but has handled the transformation perfectly (I give her an A+ 👍).

Maya. I went to Efterskole myself (class of 80/81). Best year of my life 😀 ! You start on a clean slate. You don't know anyone there 😲 ! You make new friends and learn to adjust to a life, that's not all about one self. Learning to be part of a bigger picture (my opinion anyway 😊 ).

The Danish word "fremmed" is - like many other Danish word - multi-faceted in its meaning, meaning both stranger, foreigner, unknown, guest, and alien all in one. However, having those three meanings in one word also means that most people tend to understand the word with an emphasis on "stranger", which is slightly more negative than neutral. But primarily - for some reason - fremmed means non-Danish, and that in a way is the worst meaning.
Guess you have to be international to get that reference, international vs foreigner, i have never thought about that one

I thought that when you said international that there are similar people who call themselves Expat as they do not want to be called immigrants even though they are what they often look down on.
But I would be interested in if Maya made a comparison between what she learned in school there compared to her friends left in the US (their school system is more about themselves and not the rest of the world while we in Europe learn about both our own country but also many others)
Would also like to know when half the time you have been in Denmark is during the pandemic and compare with how it has been and the difference between how it has been in the US during the same time when they ache mistrust everything and everyone and are afraid that something will happen compared to Denmark that listens on their politicians / officials and are confident that no one will do anything against them as it is still a society that is built on trust between everyone.
that is just how most people i would say, do here in Denmark, to not have other non Danish speakers feel expluded from any convo's.. it is our second language, but don't forget that English were build with alot of Germanic language. Danish and english have alot of similar words that sounds the same,- almost. ETC. for me over the years and my childhood i got so used to speaking and understanding english that i read and write English faster than Danish. tho i use English maybe 85% of the day, to the point were i alot of times Think in English, its weird ^^

I can understand how hard it is, to learning danish as it is definitely not easy. I mean my 7years old daughter is in the process of learning how to read and spell. The major issue is all the different ways the same spelling is used, and nothing really sounds the way it is spelled 😁
Words like så (så så naboen, at bonden havde været ude at så) and får (far får får får? Nej får får ikke får, får får lam).
When I showed my daughter the last one, she just looked at me like I was insane 😁
My family and I went to Colorado for 2 month, due to my old job, and we really loved staying there. And have talked a lot about, having an extended stay again or having a summerhouse there if that would ever be possible 😁
Totally agree! Keep "International" 😊 ! "Foreigner" can be demeaning 😔 ! I work with US Americans, that actually do speak Danish (sure with an accent, but still). So it can be learned. I like that you warn people, to what may be coming. Your not moving from a copy of your country, to a smaller version of that 😀 ! New Country, New Culture..., new way of life 😊 ! But the "Youngs" seem to have adjusted just fine 😊 ! We still need to teach you to like/enjoy "Licorice" 🤣 🤣 🤣 !!!
Foreign/er is probably best translated as "fremmed".
It refers to both someone and something that is foreign. Whereas udlænding is just a foreign person.

It's not the Danish language that's going to stop you. We're glad just others will try to communicate. In all languages. Sign language can be a challenge for most people

Wearing it right now :). I don’t wear it everyday so sometimes it’s not on video. But it’s still here and I still feel the same about wearing it :).
Is it not possible for Maya to apply as an exchange student so she gets to go to prom?
She kinda needs to do as much education in DK as possible so she can become more proficient in the language and meet requirements for university.

What's with the earbuds?
It was so we could hear the audio from the video we were watching. If we played the audio through the computer speaker it would cause issues with the mic that was grabbing our voice.
Thanks again for your frankness…..about the word ‘foreigners………as a Dane I have always been irked about being referred to as ‘alien’ in an American and English immigration process…even applying for uk residence, we were ‘aliens’……..in your situation…I would call you ex-pats…..but that may just be me……a couple of the Danish words refer back to large-scale immigration from -primarily - Turks in the early 70’s and are neither very nice, nor very descriptive….fremmedarbejder……indvandrer (the last not so bad when literally translated, but it has a ring to it)…
I suspect that my response to foreigner is similar to alien, which I agree isn’t a good thing to say.
It was fun to watch that old video, you almost want to ask, who died ? :) so sad compared to now, but might just be you are more use to being in front of the camera.
Continue to speak Danish, it is the only way to learn it :)

Speak Danish with those you trust and are close friends, they will respect your mistakes, and if you want to speak the language really well, let them correct you when the pronunciation or grammar goes off rails.
