    Thank you, I've had massive issues with 3rd register (from E onwards). This video has been the most helpful to me, as it is so far the most elaborate when it comes to the tension and the direction of the air stream. :)

    I was struggling terribly with my third register G until I realized I was using the wrong fingering. I knew all my fingerings but overlooked G thinking it was the same, the whole time I was pressing the Bb key and the sound wouldn’t come out. Thank you for helping me realize!!

    Thank you so much, I have real problems with throat tension, I'm a piano and violion teacher but on flute I'm an absolute beginner and I get so frustrated because I want a great sound instantly! so I am tense. Your tips on opening the throat have helped more than anything I've watched and also the advice on embouchure is fantastic.

    7:48 I wasn’t expecting that lol! By the way, this is the only video so far that mentions the upper lip going forward, I noticed this while practising on my own and wanted to make sure this was a thing, but no video mentions this except yours, thank you so much!

      Thanks for watching my video. I’m happy the extra info on the top lip helped you! Keep in mind that the top lip comes forward as a result from relaxing and opening your jaw. :-)

    Beautiful! I have only been playing for 6 months. I am a pianist but always wanted to learn the flute. I am self-teaching myself and am currently working on developing a good sound in the third octave. Thanks for the tips and video.

      You're welcome. I hope these tips help you! One piece of advice since you've only been playing 6 months: work on getting a focused tone in the low and middle registers first as well as do some practice on harmonics to learn lip strength and flexibility. If you'd like some help one on one, I teach online private lessons. You can reach me through my webpage: www.thelarsenflutestudio.com

    Beth,
    I'm a very new composer and I am wondering how long you can play without a rest? I need tips from a flutist on what is reasonable and what is possible. Do you have breathing techniques that allow you to take short breaths when you have an extended passage?

    • @Merip1214
      @Merip1214 2 роки тому

      I'm hardly an expert, but the length will vary a bit. I hit my limit by the end of something like "we're walking on the air". The long notes are ok on their own, but as a whole there's very little recovery. So bear that in mind as well.
      Techniques, well I don't know if there are others, but circular breathing definitely doesn't work with flutes 😊

    • @edenmelob
      @edenmelob 2 роки тому +1

      late response, but as a flutist personally i am working a piece that has a slow tempo + i only rest for 4 counts in the beginning of the song. i'm playing the rest of the song. there aren't a lot of tied notes but depending on who you're wanting to have play your music piece, you may have to shorten long notes. younger flutists don't usually have the ability to hold out good long notes

    • @bethlarsenflute3117
      @bethlarsenflute3117  2 роки тому

      How long one can play without a rest varies from person to person. Typically beginners can only play for about 6 seconds before running out of air. Depending on the note, tempo and dynamic, I can typically make it to about 40-60 seconds (at 60 bpm). Yes, I have breathing exercises that I do before practicing that help expand my breath capacity and that are also designed to help with taking in maximum air in a short amount of time. Swimming helps too! Playing the flute is definitely an aerobic activity! Thanks for commenting.

    • @bethlarsenflute3117
      @bethlarsenflute3117  2 роки тому

      @@Merip1214 Circular breathing does work on the flute, but it does take a considerable amount of time to learn since we have no reed or mouthpiece to hold back the air.

    please I don't understand what you mean by low register and high register.Can you explain.

    • @bethlarsenflute3117
      @bethlarsenflute3117  4 місяці тому

      The low register are the lowest notes that can be produced on the flute--from the low C one line below the staff to C in the staff. The high register are the highest notes the flutes can produce. They sit above the staff--from C to the top C. The full range of the flute is 3 1/2 octaves.

    I struggled in the high register for so long time, it always goes too sharp in my most relaxed way to blow. But if I control it, I’m so tired and not loud. How can I fix this problem?

    • @bethlarsenflute3117
      @bethlarsenflute3117  3 роки тому

      There are so many things that go into playing well and in tune in the third register. Without seeing and hearing what you're doing, it's tough to diagnose the problem. I'm happy to offer more specific advice through an online lesson. Contact me through our website: www.thelarsenflutestudio.com

    • @bethlarsenflute3117
      @bethlarsenflute3117  3 роки тому

      Check if you're using the correct fingering. If you're talking about the first Bb above the staff and you're fingering it Left hand: thumb, 1, Right hand 1 and pinky and it doesn't come out, your flute may be leaking. Try the "short" fingering for Bb: Left hand thumb on top part of thumb key and right hand 1st finger and pinky down. If your flute is leaking, that fingering may fix it. If that doesn't work, try using a faster airstream and directing it more across the hole. I'd need to see and hear you play in order to properly diagnose whether the problem is with the flute or with you. Contact me for a Zoom lesson at: bethlarsen82@gmail.com

    The most frightening thing or a reed player doubling on flute?
    C above the staff. lol

    • @bethlarsenflute3117
      @bethlarsenflute3117  26 днів тому

      Are you talking about C3 or C4? The first C (3rd register) above the staff is relatively easy to produce with fast air and a small lip opening. The C in the 4th register, however, requires a very different fingering and much faster air-both of which can make it very challenging.

    I hv terrible register on the 3rd G#

    • @bethlarsenflute3117
      @bethlarsenflute3117  2 роки тому

      I’m sorry to hear that. Check your fingering-have you lifted your left hand thumb and index finger? High G# is a stubborn note to produce (like high E) so make sure you support your airstream well and try to avoid pinching your lips to get the note.
