    My favourite sport, I know a lot of people hate on it for being “lame” but it’s a fun and easy sport to pick up and play casually but extremlyyyyyy hard to be amazing at it. I’ve been curling 15 years and I still make mistakes that make or break a game cause I messed up a core mechanic. Very tough to master and very unforgiving

    Started curling 8 years ago...its now my favorite sport. Incredibly easy to play but very difficult to be good. What I find interesting is that the haters with no experience know for sure the game is lame. After 1 year of curling I understood about 10% of what the game actually entailed. I still need more experience to watch a top tier game and understand why the skip calls for certain shots at certain times.

    The ice is pebbled because the rocks won't curl on flat ice. Brushing flattens the ice so the stone travels further and curls less. Also, the thrower calls the line, that is, will call "HARD" or "HURRY" if the stone is curling too much. The skip, the guy at the other end, will call the weight, that is, how far he thinks the stone will go. If he thinks it's going to be short, he'll call "HURRY" or "HARD". Sometimes the skip will call "CLEAN" which means cleans the ice in front of the stone but don't apply any pressure.

    The bumps on the ice are meant to reduce friction. So how does heating the ice, and potentially melting those bumps, reduce friction as well?

    • @g3tsiak547
      @g3tsiak547 2 роки тому

      I'd guess that since the stones are hydrophobic, the little water that melts acts as a lubricant. The sweeping only melts a miniscule amount, not enough to ultimately remove the bumps, just enough to affect the stones.

    They put droplets of water on the ice to reduce the surface friction,
    and then they brush it to melt the ice to reduce friction,
    can`t be both,
    brushing slows the stone down not speed it up.

The problem is with these games the air times for curling is at like 4am so it is hard to watch since I don't have a DVR. I don't know why its my favorite but it is. I guess I just like relaxing and watching it. Maybe it brings me back to a time when I was sick and all messed up on tussinex (cough syrup with hydrocodone) maybe it is just the nostalgia of that but I love watching it. So much in fact during the 2010 winter games after I was sick I skipped school just to stay home and watch it.

    1:40 "less of the rock in contact with the ice, less friction". Whoopsie? Friction doesn't depend on surface area, because if you minimize the contact area you are putting a larger weight per unit of area through said surface which ends up making no difference. If this was true, you'd see winter rallying with very very wide tyres for increased friction. Which you don't.

    • @Greginda11
      @Greginda11 11 років тому +4

      by that logic it should be just as easy to push a 2by4 about 15-20 feet long as the push those rocks. decreasing surface area does decrease friction. The amount of friction per area goes up like a line graph due to weight, but that is more than counteracted by decreased surface area which makes it go down in a curve. That is why cars have wheels where tanks have treads. Even if you equalize weight the car will go faster on 4 wheels than it would on treads and the reason tanks use treads is because the greater surface area gives them more friction. MATH BITCH.

    • @YokubouTenshi
      @YokubouTenshi 11 років тому +4

      then skates also shouldn't be thin blades by your logic. Less surface area does indeed much more pressure. The pressure is needed to melt the ice in order to create hydroplaning. Same theory in curling

    • @Greginda11
      @Greginda11 11 років тому +1

      first off it isn't a thin blade it is a curved blade that meets the ice at two points. the pressure from the stone would not be great enough to cause a heat difference fast enough. the reason the brooms work is because they lead the stone. It is the swift movement and high pressure of the brooms leading the stone that causes the hydroplaning. If you take two stones one 4x4x4 feet and the other 16x16x1 (equal volume) and push them on any surface it will be easier to push the cube rather than the disc. and It can't even be hydro because if you were paying attention to the entire video you would of heard that even with the friction from the brooms the ice doesn't melt. there is some water but not enough to cause hydroplaning. There is only enough water to make the ice more slippery (like a recently cleaned isle in the store)

    • @Groaznic
      @Groaznic 11 років тому

      YokubouTenshi It's not "my logic", it's a fundamental concept of physics that friction is independent of the contact area. Blades are thin for carving strongly into the ice for good maneuvers.

    • @Groaznic
      @Groaznic 11 років тому +1

      Greginda11 Friction F = µG. See the absence of surface area? PHYSICS, BITCH! Also, tanks have treads for going off-road and distributing the weight over a huge contact area to allow them to stay on top of things. Cars have a minimal amount of wheels as that's easier to maintain and also enables usage of highest tech drivetrain, suspension and materials, good luck trying to sell a mainstream car with 24 of those!

The most interesting part of curling is why rocks actually travel in the direction of their spin when spinning disks on flat surfaces usually spin opposite their spin! HellGod67 Friction: Ff ≤ µFn
      Ff is the force of friction exerted by each surface on the other. It is parallel to the surface, in a direction opposite to the net applied force.
      µ is the coefficient of friction, which is an empirical property of the contacting materials.
      Fn is the normal force exerted by each surface on the other, directed perpendicular (normal) to the surface.
      Area in contact is nowhere to be found.

      Dennis Fyhr Yup, you're right, and it really makes sense after I think about it. Kinda like the whole "two objects of different mass fall at the same rate" thing. I do object to just using "Ff ≤ µFn" to prove your point though. That formula shows what the friction force could possibly be given the friction coefficient and normal. People that don't know any physics also need to know that that friction coefficient is derived without a given area. But again, you're totally right. I love it when people are totally right and someone tries to say they're not and then the first person drops a science bomb on their ass.

    Drastic oversimplification of the sport, also incredibly poor form from everyone I saw in the video. Curling is a sport of incredible precision, strategy, and skill. When you understand the game you'll find that all of these things make it one of the most interesting sports to watch and play. If you don't understand everything that's involved you might not find it interesting but believe me you're missing out! I wish this video did a better job of showcasing it.
