Mezzo-soprano opera singer Denyce Graves performs the classic spiritual song, "Poor Me," with pianist Brian Zeger. Graves sings in honor of Marian Anderson, who performed "Poor Me" all over the world. The song is originally arranged by Nathaniel Dett, a Black composer notable for working with classic African-American folk songs and spirituals at the turn of the 20th century.

Strange how the pianist plays slightly off the downbeat on nearly every downbeat.
Never seen that much hesitation. As pianists, we must always be at LEAST on the exact beat with the singer or slightly in front. Remember, the easiest way to be sure you are exactly with the singer is to listen very carefully to their breath. That alone will inform you(the pianist) exactly when to place your beats/downbeats.
