  • If you encounter a wild cassowary you have to 1. Look him in the eyes 2. Back away and 3. Hold something in front of you.
    Luckily for us the thing in our hand was a GoPro so when a wild cassowary charged over we caught it on film.

      @@starscreamofvos Well technically we actually are on top of the food chain in most places of the world. Also, we are actually true omnivores, eating both plant and meat material on a regular basis. We have the guts and incisor teeth to handle meat, as well as gut and molar teeth to handle decent amount of plant materials. Humans are top predators for much of the ecosystems we occupy around the world. Doesn’t mean we’re not in danger of animals below us in the food chain and same goes for other carnivorous animals. For example, cape buffalo and other prey game kill animals like lions sometimes. There’s also competitive predation, where a carnivore may prey upon a competitor carnivore.
      Think about this: If it were a lie that we are on top of the food chain, would we really be as dominant of a species on this world as we are now?
      Also, (unscientific) vegan propaganda video? Really?

    • @QueenofTaterTots
      @QueenofTaterTots 5 років тому +47

      @Lalrivunga Hnamte this is a bird with claws as long and as sharp as knives known for their very fast kicks and reflexes, they also have quill feathers and a claw on each wing arm, even if you did grab it, it is by no means defenseless, secondly did you just ask how it knew where your tender bits are? The same way a horse knows to aim for your head or stomach dumbass, they fight off predators and go for the exact same spots, they don't change strategies just because you're a human, a cassowary's main defence much like a Velociraptor is to kick and rend and bite if the kick is not enough, on top of that, they are almost never alone, being very social like most birds, while you have your hands full with one, its mate will rush up and attack you or others of its kind in the same area

    • @QueenofTaterTots
      @QueenofTaterTots 5 років тому +14

      @Lalrivunga Hnamte oh well my bad I thought you were serious about it, lol well this bird isn't in aggressive mode so he would be pretty slow but when they get mad they can run up to 30 mph very quickly and leap to heights of 7 feet and yes they do group up! Much like ostriches, rheas and emus, you'll usually see an entire flock running or grouped up in an area, they only get super aggressive during nesting season or when threatened but are generally very timid but inquisitive birds, they can attack really fast though much like their ancestors could! And their beak hurts way less than the killing claw on their middle toe, they have feet much like velociraptors and a good slice with it can disembowl you much like once again the raptor family of dinosaurs

    • @QueenofTaterTots
      @QueenofTaterTots 5 років тому +5

      @Lalrivunga Hnamte yes they leap up and slash with their claws outstretched, and other cassowaries were likely in the undergrowth, they are forest dwelling birds as for height, they get around 7 feet tall at adulthood, roughly 6.5 feet, it kicks much like a roo does just without the tail for balance and higher in the air and of course killer talons

    Cassowarys aren't usually aggressive so first you have to keep that in mind. Territorial? Yes. What she was doing by backing slowly allowing the go pro to be the center of curiosity was probably the best move. As soon as you get past a certain range the bird would most likely back off and walk away. The running may shock you but it was only out of curiosity of the go pro. Good news was the cassowary wasn't making any rumbling or any other kind of noise which was the first really good sign

      Interestingly I'd say this bird is more similar to an ornithomimid, which is a dinosaur people typically assume to be nothing more than a prey animal and harmless. Look at any film depicting one, they'll never be depicted in a particularly menacing way, even toward humans.
      I feel cassowaries put into perspective that those dinosaurs were more dangerous than they're given credit for...
      I believe most wouldn't bother hunting a human, though. A lot of them didn't even have teeth and thus couldn't eat you to begin with.

    • @romanr.301
      @romanr.301 4 місяці тому +1

      Birds are not just the descendants of dinosaurs. Scientific consensus now largely concludes that birds quite literally *are* dinosaurs. The only surviving ones. Birds’ closest living relatives are CROCODILIANS.
      Also, the reason cassowaries are so aggressive is the same reason geese have to be aggressive. Geese and cassowaries both nest on the ground, where their chicks and eggs are vulnerable. So they become mean to fend off predators. Cassowaries are doubly vulnerable because they can’t fly away to escape. They’re just doing what they need to do to survive a harsh environment. It’s not anything to do with their lineage, as the aggression in non-avian dinosaurs is often largely dramatized. The dinosaurs were likely a lot more mild-mannered than we typically envision them to be.
