  • SpaceX is targeting Sunday, January 19 for an in-flight test of Crew Dragon’s launch escape capabilities from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This test, which does not have NASA astronauts onboard the spacecraft, is intended to demonstrate Crew Dragon’s ability to reliably carry crew to safety in the unlikely event of an emergency on ascent.
The six-hour test window opens at 8:00 a.m. EST, or 13:00 UTC. A backup opportunity with the same six-hour launch window opening at 8:00 a.m. EST, or 13:00 UTC, is available on Monday, January 20.
Current weather data suggests our best opportunity for the launch escape test will be towards the end of the four-hour window, but we will continue to provide updates as new data becomes available.

Really hope we get the onboard video of this. You can see how it turns sideways. it must have been going 1,900kmh by that time so those side-loads are amazing. i cant believe it survived that long and it didnt start twisting wildly. just slowly started to turn. Because it held out that long, I'm guessing the center of mass at the time was more or less in the middle of the rocket, so aerodynamic forces on the sides mostly cancelled out. And keep in mind that because the rocket is under pressure, it is relatively strong, but the moment something breaks the whole thing blows up. Exactly as we saw.

@rrobertt13 not an expert, but apparently once the flight abort system is activated the Dragon tells the Falcon to shutdown all engines so that the capsule can increase its distance from the the rocket itself. Without engines, and at that speed, the rocket will loose its trajectory and the aerodynamic forces will brat it apart, because its only meant to fly straight up, and without engines it cannot correct. So once it starts going sideways, it just broke.

      RealityIsTheNow,
I think we should give people more credit. I think people know it takes a “team” of people to make anything happen. It’s the management of all that team, it’s tasks and concepts. Bringing this type of thing to reality takes so much hard work from everyone but to have one person be the face of all that is daunting and stressful. Elon tried hard not to be CEO of Tesla but he fought tooth an nail to make sure Space X is successful. He deserves the praise. If people are free to spend millions to see their favorite artist, even though it takes a “team” to put a concert together, then people can agree that Elon is worth the admiration

@@OlCrunch The Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon were both funded by billions in NASA money. Tax money, in other words, just like Apollo. Don't forget that, lol, when you go on your bizarro ideological capitalism rants.

@Quiet Entropy What gives you that idea? Solid accomplishments, still. It doesn't matter where the money came from. Simply that the notion that "capitalism did this!" is flatly incorrect.

I could've sworn I heard John's voice a bit breaking up at 20:15, as he confirmed that telemetry is lost from Falcon 9 1st stage.
It was a good booster, faithful to the very end.
    Good bye B1046.

    Everything feels Norminal 😁
(P.S. SpaceX... please just keep him on the commentary for every launch?)

These poeple are really true humans.
These are the people who show us this is what we are created for - endevour, hardwork, push the bounderies and never give up.
Best of luck to both of you & your team. And of course space X.
