I've loved F1 for my entire life and still remember the sadness the night Senna hit that wall - I was 14. I'm 44 now, and I'm only now learning more about Stewart and this era, and wow, what an incredible, incredible man. They all were.

I can relate to his passion for cars and racing. My father is a somewhat reserved, and extremely powerful man in the business world. He did not suffer fools lightly and I would develop strategies to spend what little time we had together doing things he enjoyed. He loved F1, classic cars and wrenching … so I loved all of those things as well.
He was an executive at Goodyear and he helped bring Sir Jackie Stewart to speak at my tiny high school in the early 80’s. A landmark event.

What a great example of sportsman and human being. Humility, Intelligence, Talent, Courage......I was at Watkins Glen in 73 and remember when Cevert died. This was a great program, first rate in every way.

Beautiful documentary. Thanks for the post. I wish there was more footage of Francois Cevert. A documentary dedicated to him.

Seeing that Tyrrell of Stewart brings back memories of my youth watching F1. I envy James Martin being able to take 15 laps around Monza like that ... wow ! Jackie still looks healthy after all these years may you have many more !

I hope that Jackie Stewart's wisdom can be heard by many young people and inspire them to greatness. What a man! I remember the tail end of Jackie's career and what a sheer masterful driver he was.

I saw Jackie race at Kayalami several times. We went to the practce sessions and the race - an all weekend affiare. He once went into the catch fences at Crowthorne right in front of us! In those days you could jus wander into the pits on practice days. Those magnificent men in thier roaring machines! Thanks for the happy memories Jackie!

That accident at Crowthorne was really close. The catch fencing saved him. He stopped looking at a blaze of white, which was the wall! Qualified well down, but won the race. His first win of 1973 when it looked like Fittipaldi was on a roll!

That was fantastic. I’ve driven a shifter kart on a race track, but that Tyrell must be 1,000 times more awesome. The video made me laugh and cry, and gave me goosebumps.

Fair play to Jackie for taking the unpopular stance and using his influence to do the right thing. Nobody should die at work and especially not in a ball of fire on international TV.

How humbling this was to watch" Sir Jackie clearly still has the passion for racing, and amazingly the memory of the track, decades on, to be able to determine what gear Martin should be in!
I know he'll never read this, but I think Sir Jackie should be crowned the father of modern racing; without his experiences of racing and mortality, without his wish to make sure that motorsport was safer, he had undoubtedly saved many lives. Yes, there have been those who have died since Jackie's day, but to think of how many more could have been killed without his safety awareness scheme is unthinkable.
A truly fascinating documentary, remembering those close to Sir Jackie who completed their lap in the heavens, whilst reminding us viewers what a thrilling sport motor racing can be.
Sir Jackie, you got your knighthood for contributions to motor racing. I'd like to think that your knighthood was in recognition of those many lives who were saved thanks to your determination to make motor racing safer.

    Cevert’s death was really tragic...

Two things they missed here, he competed at the Indianapolis 500 with Graham Hill in the mid-60’s and I think he was named Rookie of the Year.
And why was there no mention of his broadcasting career on ABC? That’s where Americans first got to know him, they probably saw him as this guy with the funny accent but he really knew what he was talking about in all the racing they covered. He was their go-to guy for any racing coverage throughout the 70’s.

24:30 - Don't forget he had shaken on a deal with Ferrari for 1968. He was just waiting to sign the contract, when Jacky Ickx said they had offered him a drive. Jackie realised that is how Ferrari operated and he told them "the deal's off!"

I went to the races to enjoy a good time, but two things happened that weekend that worked against it: Cevert's crash, and the beginning of the Yom Kippur War in Israel. I forgot about the war and how I found out but I remember being in the stands across from the pits when I found out, and it was almost simultaneous with Cevert's death.

There was a wonderful one-hour documentary shown by one of the American networks in the mid-60s and it was about Jimmy Clark, it basically covered a week or two in his life, leading up to the German GP at the Nurburgring. It was called, "The Gold Ring" and it was wonderful. Of course I was probably 15 years old, but I will never forget it. I wonder if it in some vault somewhere, just waiting to be put on UA-cam. Wouldn't that be great?

I must be one of the very few people who loves cars, motor racing and especially F1. From the 1970's to the mid 1990's. Yet I can't drive myself. I find that quite strange. I wonder how many people are the same??

I'm not a driver despite my love of motor racing especially endurance sports cars and old F1. I can drive, technically yes and pretty decently but I've never sat my test or owned a car and I'm not sure I'd bother now cos it's just and endless money pit and there are so many idiots on the roads.

You can tell that he was good friends with Jochen Rindt, as Jackie got the name right.....a lot of english speakers have problems with the german ch and speak it like a k.
Same with Nina, which is spoken like Neena, though the i sound is slightly shorter than in ee.

I remember a documentary about the 1971 F1 season and after the Monaco GP. Wee jackie pealed of his righr-hand glove and his palm was like raw steak. Let nobody think he was a wimp!
One of the skills that separated the giants from the also rans was the ability to change gear with relentless precision. Most places and races were won or lost on a missed gearchange. Today's auto boxes are a mistake and take away the inate skill-set of proper driving. Bring back the foot clutch and H change ..... please!

Good driver, he had a small spanner in his car that he used to hit other drivers that got in his way

    • @gprich82
      @gprich82 7 місяців тому

Lol. No he had the spanner to remove the steering wheel bolts in a crash. When he crashed at spa in 66, he was pinned in the car with a cockpit full of aviation fuel and the electrics still on. Graham Hill had to track down a spanner from a farmer to get the wheel off to get him out of the car, as the frame deformed and there was only a 10" cockpit opening...it took nearly 20 minutes.
