Acting as Hogsmeade station for the first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Goathland station is a cutesy little place seemingly stuck in time.
Goathland railway station is a station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and serves the village of Goathland in the North York Moors National Park, North Yorkshire, England. It is famous for appearing as Aidensfield station in the television series Heartbeat, as the Hogwarts Express stop at Hogsmeade (only the first 3 films) in the Harry Potter films, as Mannerton in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, and in the end of the video of "Holding Back the Years", a Simply Red song released in 1985. Holiday accommodation is available in the form of a camping coach.
In the film, Harry Potter and the rest of the students arrive at Kings Cross Station in London, to board the train to take them to "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". They run through the wall to Platform 9¾ which takes them onto an old steam train, which eventually arrives at "Hogsmeade" station (which is actually Goathland station). The final scene in the film (and the last photo in this sequence) shows the train leaving Hogsmeade station, and thanks to special effects, has Hogwarts castle in the background.
Goathland has been used as a setting in many TV programmes and films, including Victoria Woods "Great Train Journeys", The Noel Edmonds show, Sky TV's "The Wanderer" , Gwyneth Paltrow's "Possession", and of course, the YTV series: Heartbeat, in which the village is known as Aidensfield.
But in 2001 the Warner Bros film crews arrived in the village to start filming what was then a little known title "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". In the space of a couple of days, they built a whole office block in one of the fields, complete with potted trees and named director's carparking spaces.
Goathland station was transformed into Hogsmeade station, simply by making the wall a couple of feet higher, and altering the names on the station, and the benches. The village became inundated with trucks, trailers, cameras, and reporters for about a week. The Warner Bros helicopter spent a couple of days doing aerial shots, and at playtimes, used to fly low over the school and wave at the kids.
The Goathland Harry Potter scenes at the railway station can be seen in the Harry Potter films for ever, and of course in the various TV shows and music videos that have also been filmed here.

Two brilliant Goathland videos. Thank you once again.
It’s where heartbeat was filmed, that’s what made this place famous way before Harry Potter even existed
True! 👍
Gimbal Walk TV very good filming, I’ve watched your Skegness and Chappell st Leonard’s video and they are decent
I'm watching from Tokyo, Japan. I've been here and Whitby and Staithes in 2019. They were all very very fantastic and fascinating. Thanks for posting the great videos !
Ah thank you 🙏 appreciate the kind words!
This was an excellent guided tour of the station in detail. It is useful as I have recently bought the Hornby Hogsmead station. I know where everything should go now. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Does anyone know when exactly during the later series of Heartbeat when the garage became Scripps?. Just wondering because I noticed when we visited the village in 2001 the garage was still named Mostyn's Garage and Funeral Services, which is strange because the character Malcolm Mostyn had left at the end of series 3 and in series 5 Bernie Scripps arrived as a funeral director (I think). Vernon arrived in 2001 after Greengrass had left, so I would've assumed he and Bernie had took over the garage and named it Scripps, but apparently the garage was still named Mostyn at that point, well it was when when we went there in 2001.
I wonder why very few videos of the village appear from the 90s when Heartbeat was a much better show than what it became later on after Greengrass left. I know some will disagree, but there's no doubt for me that Heartbeat jumped the shark after Greengrass left and was never the same. It became too silly, too cliched, too soft and squeaky clean, no gritty and realsitic storylines, just a rose tinted part comedy part drama for the pipe and slippers Sunday night audience.
When we first visited the village in May 1994 you could actually drive up to the petrol station pump, and we had a chat with two blokes that ran the place about the filming. We then drove to the train station and parked right next to the gate to the platform, know doubt you can't do that now (why?), and then drove to Greengrasses house and the owner mentioned they were there a week earlier filming a scene of his barn on fire.
Hmm some really good points there!
Just watched your 2 video's on goathland brought back so many memories thank u must take my boy's there one day
Ah nice! I like it there it’s a great place to spend a day!
Thanks for that! It's ages since I've been to 'Aidensfield'
Frank Todd ah you’re welcome Frank! Thank you for watching my channel! 👍
Not really into 'steam' in any big way but it's nice to see an old Steam railway station so well preserved AND still in full working order.
Thanks for the trip Mr Walk
keep em coming 🤩✔💯👍
Many thanks!
Was lucky to catch the steam train I think!

Posted just a couple of days ago - when was it filmed? Before C-19 I guess?
Yes Steve bang on - this one's an older one that I'd not put up yet. Think it's a couple of years old at least!
@@GimbalWalkTV Thanks for the update Let's hope it gets back to normality very soon
Love the station
Same! It's like travelling back in time to a nicer time!
Definitely nicer time 😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍
Now is this Aidensfield station, or Hogsmead station? 😅
Ahhhh good question!
Also in a Simply Red music video too!
What are the white carriages. That’s 😊 lovely Dee
Believe it or not the carriages on the sidings are little hotel rooms!
Who could forget the whimsical figure of Mick Hucknall screeching out one of his awful songs on a deserted platform?
Ha ha ha not a fan then John? 🤣
The place I like to go in the rain in Hogwarts Legacy.
❤️❤️❤️
