    I'm not sue what's the more amazing accomplishment: The people who designed and built it originally or those that restored it 70+ years later.

    • @Peasmouldia
      @Peasmouldia 5 років тому +8

      I'd have to go with the originators. US was undisputed leader in casting bar framed locos. Here in the UK we built only plate framed locos. When North British built locos for SA they had to buy in the cast frames from ALCO. One of the benefits of building plate frame locos is it's way easier to do new builds such as Tornado. I know there are new builds planned in the US, really looking forward to seeing that, God willing.

      My two cents, when originally built. Done without computers, cad cam, etc. done with brains slide rules and ingenuity. Plus by the forties the manufacturing facilities of the US were quite advanced after over a century’s experience. These machines were built during the epitome of the steam age and the diesel revolution was in process soon to be the reason for the end of the golden age of steam.

    Why does a restored engine bring a man to tears? It happened when our 'big boy' version (the reticulated Garrett) came back to life in OZ, and its happening again - in my lifetime! My only answer is we are honouring the past and bringing a slice of it back into life in our own time. Every time I hear a steam engine whistle blow near out house, I have an urge to chase it in my car to watch it go past. I cannot imagine how amazing it must be to be having a morning coffee in the States, and hearing the low mournful blast of those gorgeous whistles

    Having copies of the original ALCO drawings and seeing what UP has done brings me to tears, even if I wasn't a UP stock holder. As I recall, the 3985 was made operational by taking a jackscrew from a "big Boy" on static display. Is it really under it's own power? I noted there is no steam coming out of the rear pistons so those 8 wheels aren't driven and there is little coming out of the front cylinders so I'm not sure they are running either. Lots of steam out the stack which is impressive but it should be going to the drive wheels. Am I wrong?

    • @leroypryor5025
      @leroypryor5025 5 років тому +1

      @@trongod2000 Research how a steam locomotive works. Simplified version is that steam goes through the cylinders, then up into the smoke box and up through the stack. It's set up like that to create a draft pulling the heat from the firebox through the steam tubes inside the boiler, therefore creating more steam. When you see steam coming out of the cylinders directly, it's because the engineer has opened the cylinder cocks to allow any condensed water out of the cylinders.

      @@leroypryor5025 LeRoy, I admit I'm not even close to being an expert on big steam locomotives. Have to admit though that I did grow up with them. My great grandfather was an engineer on one and died at the throttle back in the early 20th century. It still looks odd to me that we almost never see steam coming out of one piston but pretty regularly out of the others. Should I be attributing that to the "steamy ones" being leaking and the others tight?

    I enjoy seeing this steam beast back under it's own power. In addition, it was fantastic to hear the whistle for the first time on the big boy. After the restoration was done or nearly done.
    Which leads me to say this is the type of thing that makes America great again. The fact we can still do the simple things, like what Ed and the crew at UP did with the restoration of the Big Boy.
    Because even though the task is huge and complex, it is still a simplistic thing, that is majestic, aw inspiring, and for a person that may have missed out on a lot of this era it is larger than life.
    Needless to say, I had no doubt that Ed and crew could get it done, however, I thought it might take longer to complete. Bases on the fact that I didn't feel that the budget would be there in the schedule that it needed to be on to get out to Ogden.
    Well until, I seen the video of Ed speaking about his meeting with the leadership of UP.
    Which for me changed my mind and told me that the Big Boy was going to be done in time to go to Ogden.
    Yes, it is a simple thing, that for me at least is a huge deal. Since I wanted to see if people could still do what was deemed to be impossible to be done, by restoring the Big Boy.
    Again, it is a simple thing, however, it can be one of the most complex things at the same time. Since I am sure it did cost a lot to restore, and it takes a lot of focus, on top of the amount of time it takes to do. Moreover, at anytime, the company could have pulled the plug on the project.
    Needless to say, it showed me a lot, even though at face value, is a simplistic thing, that is still a complex undertaking at the same time. At least from my perspective that is what I am taking from this journey.

    The god of steam locomotives has awaken from it's 60 year slumber. I hope and pray The Sound Traveler records the sound of this awesome beast in full range binaural audio. The guy did full justice with the Space X Falcon Heavy full scale test launch and I want to here this iron beast roar.

    I absolutely loved everything that happened between 4:35 and 6:45
    Freight train rolls by and Ed is like, "This is how it's done." At one point, it was a competition to see who could make more noise. I loved it!

  • @KitClan

    I'm sorry, but the Big Boy is so much more 'beautiful' than the Diesel engines we have now.
    I LOVED to see this engine out and running again. Reminded me of when I was younger and the Big Boy/Challenger engines ruled the rails. Steam engines show their power much better.
    As I said--- BEAUTIFUL!!

    That was really cool. I really like the whistle, it has a lot more character than a Diesel-electric locomotive's air horn. But it looks like maybe they could do a bit of tuning to do on their fuel air mix. The black smoke could mean the fuel-air mix is too rich and not all the oil is getting burned. I wonder if they can better control that.

  • @daviddowling9830

    You cannot appreciate the sound of that whistle if you,as a child,we’re not soothed into sleep by the trains passing in the night to destinations unknown while broadcasting the symphony of the machine.

    4:31 - 4014 alone could possibly replace the 8 or 9 diesel units pulling that train headed away from the camera.

    • @theq4602
      @theq4602 5 років тому +2

      That's most likely a power move. Sometimes they get a deficit of locos in one spot and too many in another so they put them on a normal freight train and haul them while turned off. Also can help with breaking.
