- 48 Hours On This 48 Year Old Triumph Stag!
A neighbour on the estate recently purchased a 1972 Triumph Stag, and asked if I could take a look at the bonnet as it was in quiet a bad state. I was given the car for a few days, to see what kind of condition we could get it back to.

Hi everyone, I’m the fortunate owner of the stag. You are all quite correct in noticing how hard Matt worked and I send my personal thanks to him and to you out there who have commented on the car
Thanks for that!
Part 2 videos coming soon 😁
He done an amazing job, I'm glad you the owner appreciate that we are not mircle workers! Some people think we can restore to lime a repsrayed car! Lol, you won't get that paint better than what he did. Seriously good work, all about preservation
I can appreciate how hard he worked, but you need to replace that paint before it damages your metal. If you strip that, you'll find rust all over the place. It spreads as fine surface rust all over the place. Poof, one day you notice bubbles and other degradation's.
Find a really good resto guy and get that thing carefully stripped and refinished. Inside out, upside down and backwards.
Good restorers will allow you to make monthly payments on a per work progress basis.
You usually find the best restorers are back woods shops nobody ever heard of.
I bought a stag last sunday. With the same coulour. I am thinking about I don't know the english word, in german it is called "aufbereiten". So the thing you did with this stag. But I am a little bit afraid about rust and I don't know if the softtop is really "dicht ".
My mechanic said, don't ride it in the rain, but you use water, too? :-) So you know what I mean?
You did a fantastic job.
I was with my normal car at a "Aufbereiter" im Brilon, where I live. He did a fantastic job, with this car, so I think I will go and talk to him about my stag...
Wish you all the best..
Something about watching an old car like this being corrected is just much more satisfying than any modern car. Good work.
I know what you mean. It's been years since I had a car more than 15-20 years old, and seems even longer since I had to deal with paintwork in the state that this bonnet was in!
Brilliant Matt..... So interesting. Having a lovely afternoon watching your detailing vids 👌🏼👍🏼
Haha, cheers 👍
I think that is the best “very period” colour for the Stag bearing in mind BL never released it in metallic paint!
Great to see an older car that is obviously more taxing to improve, cracking job 😎
Thanks 👍
Very nice, do love a Stag. Great 70's colour too! Good job! :-)
Thanks so much!
Their missing a trick with the hats, that slims logo would look half decent on a cap
Great vid Mat fantasic result just shows what can be done even with old paintwork
Thanks 👍
great video matt, a lot of hard work went into that.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done Mat, should be proud of what you accomplished there mate, top job, Thank You for sharing mate
Thanks 👍
Great video 👍 Absolutely love Stags 😍 My uncle had a blue one back in the 80’s, it was gorgeous 🇬🇧
Very cool
English proud made and designed by English
Well done that man!!! At least you had a very well kept Stag to begin with, nonetheless an amazing piece of detailing, all credit to you! I'd have you round to do my 1974 P6B 3500S in a heart beat, unfortunately I'm down here in Australia!
I'm up for that commute.... I only travel first class though 😉😎🤣
That was really good to watch. I'd of love to have seen the customers reaction because after all, that's why we do it.
Haha thank you. He has posted a reply actually (see pinned comment)
@@TheDetailingSpace that's brilliant. Thanks
Fantastic Job !!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Good to have you back at last Mat, missed these videos. What an amazing car
Thanks....
Not missed any videos, or do you mean the full detail type videos?
@@TheDetailingSpace The full detail ones, update date with all the others thanks
Stunning finish that matt..... you grafted that weekend....👍
Thanks 👍
Lovely job,,what a lucky boy getting to work on this awesome icon of a motor!! An all time favourite of mine these, thanks for the footage mate. One crucial thing missing tho,,sound check!!! Please go back to your neighbor and get permission for a small vid on the car running. 🙏🙏🙏
haha, it's coming back again soon, so may get some exhaust noise for you.
@@TheDetailingSpace you've made my day lol,,cheers mate.
Hi Mate, sorry for the delay in response.
Wow!! Mate fantastic, some good things to remember here for sure.
Keep well, from Sydney Australia. 😀
Thank you 👍
What a fabulous car and end result. Well done.
Wow looks fantastic 👏🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Awsome results
Glad you think so!
Great work -a masterclass !
Many thanks!!
Hi Mat,ive been waiting to see this, for a 48 old classic car it cleaned up very well, the difference before and after is times better.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant vid👍
Thanks you
Your wife will have that done before you finish doing her dinner 😁😁😁 great job Matt 👍
hahahaha.... Thanks
Fantastic video loved it
Thank you very much!
Such a beautiful car. Only the sort sighted and penny pinching policy of the manufacturers at the time prevented this from being a World beater. Not sure much has changed now, but at least technology would allow us to identify and correct the flaws - funds permitting.!!!!
That old tyre dressing looked like a nightmare! 😱
Mate, wrecked that brush. Been using it 10 years or more and it's stained it bad 🤣
@@TheDetailingSpace Some people might want to know what it was for the "need a long lasting tyre dressing..... threads on DW 😀
Detailing World you can come and do mine .... anytime 👍☑️
Haha, well, that would depend where you're based 😉
No idea what is was as I didn't apply it 😂
Great job, how would any of those processes work if the car has a clear coat paint finish? Cheers Bob
They'd be the pretty much the same TBH, although I wouldn't have so many stained pads and cloths 🤣
You put a lot of work into that video Mat. 👍
Indeedy. 👍
Love the car, I'm looking for another one now.
Is that a normal speed to be going with a da? Looks a bit too fast. Correct me if I'm wrong
At what point? There's slow motion footage, sped up footage and footage at normal speeds. There's also a few shots where it looks like I'm going fast at normal speed, but the DA is on a low setting and just spreading the polish.
@@TheDetailingSpace 22.00 - 22.09 there's other bits too
That is phenomenal 👏 work. Its as if the car just rolled out of the factory/show room. That is the stuff of dreams. 🙌⭐️
What was the little sponge used at the end for the tyre dressing ?
That was from Max Shine. A dedicated tyre dressing applicator. They have a concave shape to them to fit the contour of the shoulder.
Certainly an improvement Matt when I did a TR6 I used a rotary to cut single stage paint 🎨 can be a nightmare but very rewarding nice car mate
As I said several times, I always used a rotary for this kind of work, but knowing how thin the paint was in some areas, it was safer to hit with the DA - even if it did mean spending an entire afternoon just to figure out the right combo.
Enjoyed this. Overload on the adverts though.
UA-cam automated ads. I haven't had a chance to go through and adjust their in video ads... I assume they've thrown a load in then?
Oh my God, seeing this yellow stag, for a second there I thought you had gotten a hold of my mother stag. Lol. Then I remembered hers has a rover engine. And hers was stolen. A long time ago. Wait, how did you get the stag? Lol
It, erm, just appeared on my driveway. 😁
Looks amazing.. One of my favourite cars when I was at school in the 70's..
Please could you answer a question..
I have great paintwork on my car but a few small marks that will not shift so going to clay bar/mitt to see if that moves it.. I think they are old bug splats.. the question is.. Do I need to compound after clay bar or can I just use a polish then wax?
Thanks in advance. 😁
It depends if claying sorts it. If not, then yes, give it a light polish before hitting it with anything heavier. Then once finished, wax it.
Fantastic job and again a great video. Nice to see a classic getting some attention wish we had more videos of older cars getting a full detail and not yank tanks like most other UA-camrs.
Got another old car for next week's video 👍
@@TheDetailingSpace great I half want to know what it is but half want that suprise maybe this is a gap in the market specialising in older motors?
The next one is just 30 years old
That intro was very paul dolden 😂
haha, wasn't meant to be. I think it was the choice in music that made it seem like that 🤣
@@TheDetailingSpace yeah it was 😂👍
Good work bro, enjoyed this. Koch chemie fse and quick & shine are brilliant. How are you doing? 🦁
All good thanks 👍
So Mat, how much did you pay them to work on this stunner? Lovely car. I've always lusted after a Stag since my Triumph 2000 days but the UK is too wet. Amazing lines throughout and those parking lights are bright like modern DRL's.
Great vid👍👏
Lotto this weekend🤞😆
haha, thank you
@@TheDetailingSpace I used to put a wooden peg behind the choke so I knew exactly how much winter 'cold' start I needed (1cm?).
Fab job ,fab car
Nice job! How much this gets driven? What kind of durability Hard Candy has? I would choose Supernatural.
Not much at the moment as he bough it during lockdown. Was back at the garage last week to look at the fuel pump as it was flooding the engine. But no doubt will be driven more soon. (think it only has 30k or 36k miles on it!)
Lovely car, thanks for sharing. Are you from Sheffield?
Not far from Sheffield. Why do you ask?
@@TheDetailingSpace because I am from Sheffield, when I watch your videos I always think you must be as your accent is too recognisable.. Glad I was somewhat right 😂 looking forward to the next video. Take care
Polishing that mess without wet sanding is a waste of time and probably not even wet sanding is going to save it. The metal under that paint is going to have spreading rust and one day will have bubbles and holes. It should be stripped entirely and repainted BEFORE there is more damage.
Probably so, but I did what I was asked to do.
Mate you sure did work hard, Did you get any pocket money for this job. 👌
Thank you 👍
I going to enjoy this and on a nice car too😊👍do you think that Gerry out new tricks has watched this
Probably 👍😁
i had to laugh on the clutch was heavy never drove with a choke
how luxury we have it power brakes steering wheel power seats back in the day also dads 1973 beetle none of that was available
🤣
That cars had paint everywhere coz pinstripes on upside down , when can you do my stag ?
haha, is it?
Detailing World were are you based
Derbyshire, you?
Detailing World glossop same county
Nice. Feel free to email me at detailingworldupload@gmail.com
I asked my youngest son to wash my car,and offered him £5.He said he would do it for £10.I agreed and and went to watch TV.A while later I noticed his brother washing the car.Confused,I asked why his brother wasn't doing it.He replied that his brother gave him £5 to do it.🤣🤣
Nice one. Just like Del Boy and the first episode with Mike as landlord. Double the quote of the Irish guy, then sub-scontracts him out whilst they split the extra 🤣
Did Autoglym go out of fashion?
Nope. We still make videos using AG. In fact, I believe you can buy AG from Slim's Detailing.
@@TheDetailingSpace Thanks for your answer. When I lived in the UK (many years ago) and had a couple of Porsches it was very popular, but when I watch detailing videos these days it never gets a mention. I still use it and still love it.
I think it's a case of brand snobbery, or rather "reverse snobbery"
Would it not be easier to colour sand it with 3000 trizact?? Then refine ??
Possibly, but there's always a risk. And really, you should go through the steps I took - that being, least aggressive method and working up through the abrasiveness until you get the results you want.
