Let the speed of downstream water be (x+y),
Distance= 8km
Time = 40 minutes = 2/3 hrs
So we know that Speed = Distance/ time
= 8/2/3 = 12 kmh
Similarly in upstream (x-y)
Distance = 8km
Time= 1 hr
So we know that Speed = Distance/ time
Hence speed = 8kmh
