  • Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment President and CEO Keith Pelley on Friday joined Maple Leafs Team President Brendan Shanahan and General Manager Brad Treliving to discuss the state of the team while also addressing the firing of head coach Sheldon Keefe on Thursday.
    "This is the first time I've spoken publicly at a news conference as the CEO of MLSE," Pelley said. "And with that title brings heavy responsibility of overseeing the Toronto Maple Leafs. And I relish that opportunity. And at the core of that responsibility is the real reason I came back to Toronto - and that is to win. When I asked during the interview stage what is the definition of success to the owners one of them immediately said emphatically 'just win,'" Pelley added.
    After firing head coach Sheldon Keefe on Thursday, General Manager Brad Treliving addressed the decision saying "This is a really good coach. It's an excellent person. The difficulty of this business is really good people and people who are good at their job need to be changed."
    The Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs last Saturday after a Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins in overtime. The Toronto Maple Leafs have two playoff series wins in the last 20 years, and have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967.

    Safe to say Shanny F’ed up. He had Lou and Hunter with a vision of building a team through the draft system. Instead the two of them got released and Dubas became GM trading away draft picks for morons. We are here now

    31:06 Love him or hate em, but Steve Simmons always asks the right question. The Leafs have 3 of the top 9 paid players in the league (no other team has 2 players in the top 10 let alone 3 players) and their offensive production in the regular season justifies this to some extent but their character, production and effort in the playoffs is a dramatic fall off and does not warrant the high salaries.
    This answer by Shanny of explaining it as "a pattern that needs to change", isn't good enough. To say later that they are a band of brothers is scary because if that was the case, their unit in warfare would of been completely destroyed. Doesn't it bother this group that at the players exit interviews, none of the core 5 took personal accountability for the loss? It sure bothered me to hear the same old "we got a great group of guys here, we're close, etc"
    Bottom line, 2 of the big 5 players have to go. All 5 have no trade deals and each has term ranging from 1 to 8 years, so this isn't going to be easy. But it must be done. These 5 and Shanny are the common pattern that Shanny speaks about. So either he changes the 5 or he goes. This is sickening.

    Auston Matthews was suffering from a virus called anxiety, many of us know those symptoms really well.
    The problem with this team is you have a core group of players that have been told they're amazing their whole life, they play around their "talents" and have no idea what hard work and sacrifice actually is.

      The problem is they paid these kids before they proved themselves deserving and paid them on what they could be, and and now they are entitled and under performing when it counts. Matthew's, Nylander, Marner.... these guys are more scared of losing teeth then winning hockey games. They've been paid. They have already won and gotten what they want. A cup is what the fans want.

    I have been a leafs fan all my life and they need to quit blaming the coach they have changed coaches numerous times and yet we continue to lose in the playoffs. Well before you change coaches I think you need to go a little higher like get rid of Shanahan what has he done since he has been here nothing maybe we need to start at the top and work down instead of always blaming the coach. The leafs have a good regular season team but in the playoffs we just don't have the players that get better in the playoffs. So I listen to Mr Shanahan and what have you done over the many years he has been here. WE need someone who is good at chossing players and it is obvious he needs to take the same blame and maybe he needs to listen to his own message and they need someone else in that position and someone who sets up a good staff to pick good prospects whu=ich we have a couple of good one now 1 in goal and another playing wing and we need better and bigger players who have skill and toughness. It is time to get someone at the top who knows prospects and how to hire scouts who see that. I am just tired of the coach being blamed for everything. Thankyou Sheldon you I guess became the goat and that is a shame.

    I’ve been really cynical on the Leafs for the last few years… and my expectations for anything significant coming out of this presser were really low. I think because of those low expectations, I was sort of pleasantly surprised. This is the first presser that I’ve heard Brendan allude to the possibility of a breakup of the core 4 (saying everything is on the table). In past pressers from past years, Brendan spent most of those pressers reiterating his support for the core four and preaching patience… likening the leafs to the caps that took several years together to win… but there was no such talk today. For the first time, I think there is a glimmer of hope that there will be positive change. Just a glimmer though. I’ll believe it when I see it though.

    The message or goal given by owners sounded very desperate. And too onesided . Wins dont come that way.
    There are at least 5-6 better teams atm. Some will drop but not all. Some new will raise.
    The promise given is to analyze what went wrong again. But it has gone that way long time. A quick turn around is difficult to make happen. Because other teams are so competitive.
    But good luck. You need that a lot.

    You can't succeed in the playoffs without secondary scoring, and scoring from unlikely sources, because your opponents are all keyed up to shut down your top guys. That, in hindsight, was the error in roster construction, believing that their top players had another level to reach, come playoffs.

    Shanahan should have left first, then Keefe. Treliving has nothing to do with the mess created before him and made great acquisitions. I have no idea why anyone would demand his job. Shanahan taking accountability is a reach for sympathy. Same with Keefe. We all know its the players not showing up when it counts. All manage.ent can do is build a team that looks good on paper. And they did.
    Shanahan is accountable for Dubas and the bad cap working, but on paper this team should be making deep playoff runs. They just don't show up in the playoffs.

  • @Aylen-jh6yq
    @Aylen-jh6yq 23 дні тому

    In any sport it is ALWAYS the coach that gets the blame when most of the time it is management and or players that is the REAL problem. Toronto is not nor have they been built for the playoffs. Defense wins championships and cannot win cups due to management not spending the money where it matters. 1 goal was the difference in that last game and if Toronto had won, this conversation would not be happening yet.

    Trade Marner.

    • @80sLover329
      @80sLover329 23 дні тому +1

      I don’t think Marner will voluntarily waive his no trade. Which means either extend him - or wait till he’s an unrestricted free agent in July 2025 and let him walk for nothing. It may be the latter - but this is the result of giving all those players no trades… and not trading Marner before his no trade kicked in. He’s never been a superstar in the playoffs and now he wants 12x8 and he’s unmovable if he doesn’t want to go. The Leafs lost every one of those core four contract negotiations. I do have a feeling though that now with Pelley in town, Shanahan is down to his last chance. If it’s a first round exit again next May, Shanahan won’t be at the May 2025 presser. And they’ll be fawning over Shanny and what a great man he was, thanking him for his service, saying that it’s a hard business, and sometimes that means canning good people…. Yada, yada.
