A January day on this Somerset flower farm (zone 8) x

- It's mid January and this flower farmer is beginning to feel cabin feverish - but a few hours outside reminds me that there will be spring, I can do the jobs that need to be done, that knocking a few things off a list is reassuring, and that maybe I can trust that spring will come and the garden will look amazing and there will be room for the flowers and that all will be well and all will be well and all manner of things will be well. Also interesting if you'd like to see roses being pruned with a hedge trimmer.

When I start Ranunculus always think the start of great things to come in the gardening year.
I want to thank you as in September 2022 I decided to go back to college aged 43 after visiting you at Common Farm.
I am now just waiting for my Practical RHS certificate to arrive.
Plans are to help local ladies grow fowers they love in their own gardeners.
Wishing you all the best for the flowering year.
wow that's fantastic! congratulations! and Good luck xxx
I'm just waiting for the first snowdrop! They're there but not quite out yet. I think we all have to keep our nerve at this time of year. I look around and think I'll never get on top of this but I always do. So much wind and rain to deal with, the garden looks so scruffy too. Here's to a few mild days and warmer ones to come. Thankyou for showing us around Georgie xx
Suddenly we have snowdrops everywhere - such a joy! x
Affectionate regards from a danish hedgehog/flowerfarmer/soulmate, also loosing her nerve at this time of year and needing more faith ;) 💖🌻
glad I'm not alone x
oh Georgie, I share your anxiety. Even though I know , from experience, that everything will come together and be fine, I am also fighting this dread that I will not get things done, It just seems an inordinate amount of jobs and work to do to achieve a beautiful and productive Summer garden, and yet every year it happens. Like you say, we should know this so why? I think being a hedgehog is a great idea. I might take you up on that! In the meantime, happy gardening 😃
and to you xxx
That was nice. I'm totally with you on the rising feeling of needing to plant/sow and reminding myself to hold back. Feb 16th? I've got it in my diary now. 'Georgie says.....' I'm amused by the hedge cutter for the Roses. I remember a friend saying, years ago, that the best year her Roses ever had was the year after the lambs got into the garden and nibbled her roses down to stumps. I've always cut mine back hard since!
love that - maybe I should get some sheep! lol xxx
not odd at all, Georgie! And keep your nerve. You have a lot of fun in the flower farmer year and give us a lot of fun, too. It's a great time to appreciate just how wonderful nature is for surprising us by coming back each year 🥰
So true! x
I'm way over here in California in the Central Sierra, but I related to almost everything you spoke about today. You may just be the therapist I've always needed but never had. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. ❤
my pleasure! x
It was a beautiful huge yellow moon this morning
glorious x
Moon bathing sounds lovely and de-stressing! Maybe like Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) which helps us connect to nature and de-stress.
I think very similar x
I go into hibernation before the holidays. Then again as a full fledged Hermit I'm kind of half in, half out most of the time.
I love the rose pruning.
thank you x
🎉🎉🎉me too. I fear that deluge of early spring work. I doubt my resilience .🎉🎉🎉
yes! x
Funny thing about the moon...I did lots of tidying up today in my garden today...First time in weeks and it felt sooo good..must take more notice of the moon....you may have a point..😮
every time - I don't especially keep an eye on the moon but often find when I feel the urge for a burst of activity that the moon is full x
Ive done rain dances for my garden during some summers.
I do believe the moon can have quite a profound effect on our bodies...we can get highly energized or anxious...afterall we are made of 70% water.
My cat, "Jazz" is displaying signs of madness right now, by chasing her tail, and running all over the house.....so there you go!....its full moon here too.
I love full moon energy x
You've managed to inspire me again, January is my lowest point. I truly can't get going. However I'm determined to dust it all off and do a bit every day....all those little jobs get the mojo going x thank you
they do - I feel so much better today after yesterday - and thanks to putting the ranuncs to soak I have them to plant and so day by day we grow into the year with the plants x
I love moon bathing! It gives me so much energy and brings stillness 😌. I’ve booked a tour of the farm in June I’m very excited for it, it will be gorgeous I’m sure based on all your videos you’re a pro! ❤
hurrah! glad I'm not the only moon bather - and see you in the summer! x
Yes, January is a torment and February even worse as that rest we wanted in November has grown a little old but Spring is still far off and there just isn't enough to do yet, the world outside not quite ready for us in our boredom to go at it again.
Congrats on getting your writing done. 😊. Also I think Americans and the English use “boring” in a different way. I find myself unable to sleep on the day prior to the full moon. Crazy 😅
I know what you mean about the moon - and the writing muscle is being well exercised at the moment x
Watching you inspires me to want to scratch around in my garden even though it's still covered in ice and snow in Maryland. Your earrings are stunning by the way!!
thankyou - and glad you like the earrings - my sister gave me them for Christmas x
Yes, a desire to hibernate and also the itch to get the garden started. I'm right there, too!
glad I'm not alone x
I love your unique thoughts, makes me feel normal.xx🐝🐝
lol - try it! x
I have been itching to garden and also pruned my roses today (sans hedge trimmer). I love a good moon bathe! Love the earrings
glad I'm not alone - and that you like the earrings - they were a Christmas present from my sister x
When I was a child, I was digging with a fork with my Dad, and I put the pitch fork through my foot! It went through the wellies and through around my toe base area, and had to be pulled out - nasty! But I survived, and have no scars from it. So do be careful everyone when working outside, as you warned! It did not put me off gardening however, and I loved helping my Dad out. xxx
ow! x
Just love your you tube channel! You have such good advice. Always can’t wait to see what you have next on your channel.
thankyou Lorna x
Oh my goodness! The scenery is just so beautiful. Thank you for sharing Georgie. 💚🤎💚🤎💚🤎
You are so welcome x
I believe we need to winter along with nature… The upcoming full moon is called a Wolf Moon. Go outside and howl! 🐺
lol - I love that hooooooowwwwl! x
I agree about wearing gloves in the garden, I wear them each and every time I do anytime in the garden. Also strong shoes or boots.
yes - health and safety at all times x
No probs with hearing you,you have a clear audible voice. I think the gardeners year starts in September. Really in most cultures in history,in the places that have seasons, the midwinter was NEVER the 'New Year',why would it be. To me it seems much more logical to start "new year" in March when new life is emerging. (Or as i say,for a gardener September). I dont know whose daft idea January 1st was, probably something political. At the age of 69(no one believes me),I am constructing a new garden, the third in my life, and the last i should think.
ooh enjoy the new garden - good luck! it will keep you young x
Happy New Year! Good to know someone with all your experience still ‘loses their nerve’! I can definitely feel the sap rising in me and the urge to get on. So far have managed to cut down the raspberry canes and prune a clematis. It feels so good!
it's amazing how doing a few small jobs makes us feel as though all will be well x
Loved It! Thank you Georgie 👍
You are so welcome! x
Lovely Georgie, thank you - I’ve got primroses here in my pot garden and on my allotment plus looking forward to tomorrow’s full moon - so I’ve got a big smile on my face …😊
ooh the first primrose is so exciting x
I think we call it imposter syndrome losing your nerve is a good thing really it keeps complacency at bay I always think 😊
yes! x
Have to say I have never moon bathed.😂
Balmy January days is not a thing in Norway ! Sun will return after a few months absence in a few days it will peak over the mountain!
very exciting for you x
I'm very curious about the effects of pruning the roses at the full moon, or so near it...from what I've read, one shouldn't prune on or too near a full moon, especially at the "top" of a plant...please let us know if there's any change from when you usually prune...or is this the normal time for you to cut your roses back? Do you ever consider the moon phase when pruning or cutting? Just curious...my mother's family were all farmers, and she always said to cut your hair and your lawn when the moon is waning if you want it to grow slowly, and vice-versa...love your videos!!! They're saving me from the bleak New England winter. I live in a spot, which is called a hollow, in a narrow, winding river valley among large hills and small mountains, where the last freeze date is June 10th!! Thank you for sharing with us! with deep respect and gratitude for all your hard work and lovely sense of humor...Ramona von Moritz
ah very interesting comment re pruning and the moon - maybe we should have waited - but there's nothing like the moon to give me a boost of energy and now the roses are pruned we can get on and weed and edge the beds and mulch them and just push on through the season - though we harvest roses again and again and again through the season and each harvest is like another prune so maybe I change the rhythm every time I cut? x
Do the British gardening zones correspond to the ones here in the US? Just wondering. Love the videos. Much cheaper than an analyst.
the zones are the same yes - and glad you love the videos x
Opposite side of the workd here...too hot to do anything!
ooh stay in the shade x
Hi Georgie, I’ve been trying to grow ranunculus for a couple of years without much success! I’ll try some in, some out this year as you suggest. Can I ask where you buy yours from please?
mine are from Peter Nyssen for new stock and then last year's saved stock was from Cel at Forever Green Flowers x
A lot of adverts, I understand you need them to make it worth your time but I am 6 mins in and I have watched 6 adverts (3 lots). I won't skip because I want to support your channel, however, it seems a lot.
wow that's a lot! I have a club specially for people who prefer to watch without the ads so do have a look at that if you prefer. xxx
