  • Join flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery of Common Farm Flowers between Bruton and Wincanton in Somerset as she gives you a tour of her flower farm on a bitterly cold mid March day. You can feel spring is round the corner, but it's cold enough for gloves and a great many kidney-warming layers (see the flower farming chic section of this clip.) Starting off with layering up, through bottom-of-the-fridge soup prep, round the wildflower patches, via crab apples, frogspawn, and ending up at greenhouse and tunnel with dahlias and seedlings to prick out, this is a typical late winter/early spring weekend morning here at Common Farm.
    If you're booking a place on our workshops or demos the website will ask you to choose a delivery date - any date will do! And if you can't join our sessions live then you are still very welcome to book as we send the recording and notes of the workshop out to everyone afterwards, so you can download the session and refer back to it as and when you need to.
    For an extended ad free version of this clip, all the info re 'the project,' and all Georgie's new clips with extra tips, news and regular live at 5s, do join her UA-cam club. You can join up here: / @theflowerfarmer

    I really enjoyed the fashion show and seeing your bedroom. It looks like a bedroom where one could get a wonderful night's sleep. No electronics! I no longer spend money on clothes but I did spend a pretty penny on a new pruning tool last year. Now I've spent a surprising penny on a Swiss Made sharpening tool. You would think it was made of gold. Any chance you would do a demo on how you sharpen and care for your tools? I could use the help.

    Thank you for the tour Georgie. I've been loving your cost red jumper ❤️ Yes always keeping the kidneys warm here too with thermal layers and now I have a battery heated body warmer...just fabulous. I find it really reassuring to go around a professional garden and see that it too is sleeping and mostly brown. This means I'm not doing anything wrong! It's easy to lose heart on the colder days but you're really helping my motivation. Those wild orchids...I have them in my local area and I'm hoping to introduce them to my small " meadow" area where I have my phone, my teasels and my shade loving wildflowers. Thanks again ! 😁

    Please could you do an episode about Fabrizio? I realise he is camera shy. Could you talk about his connection to your land. I realise you have talked about his orchid meadows etc. i would like to know more about what drives him, does he have a separate occupation? What is his skill set/experience/ what are his goals? What would he like to see evolve on your land in the coming years?
    I have been to one or two flower farm visits and been the only “man”. It is partly why I haven’t joined Flowers from the Farm… I would love to hear a little more of his perspective even if he doesn’t want to speak on camera. I love women of course, yet I feel a little imposter syndrome because everything I am able to engage with on the subject of small scale regenerative flower farming involves women. Which of course I salute and it has been a beautiful education for me.
    In the current climate. That said. Is there a part for “men” to play in the small scale regenerative British flower farming movement ?

    • @theflowerfarmer
      @theflowerfarmer  Рік тому +1

      I'll ask him - but he really does like to keep out of the social media - I get what you say though - of the hundreds of people I've taught about flower farming over the years maybe I've had fifty men join my sessions while hundreds of women are my students. Don't be put off. Of course there's a part for all people to play in small scale regenerative farming, flowers included. You just have to choose the part you wish to play and go for it. Will you be a grower, a grower/florist, a wholesaler, specialise in edible flowers, a person with a year-round season, someone who focuses on their summer months, sell locally, or through an online wholesale market site delivering further afield... so many options. Look up James at Flowers by Clowance and Paul at BJ Richards and you'll see you won't be the only fellow growing and dealing in cut flowers. x

    • @theflowerfarmer
      @theflowerfarmer  Рік тому

    Could I suggest planting a few other excellent cut flowers in your woodland that would take care of themselves: Polygonatum (Solomon's seal), and variety, but the variegated ones make exquisite fillers of tulip bouquets. Convallarial majalis 'Bridal choice', the largest form of Lily fo the valley, bred by florists to have stems long enough for floristry. Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye giant', a long-stemmed, large-flowered form of the summer snowflake.
