Kids love dinosaurs and kids love war. Put them together and you get Dino-Riders.
It was supposed to be huge with a full out marketing and merchandising blitz with tons of intricately sculpted toys but it failed after just one season and 14 episodes.
But that sculpting work did have a second and third life. This is the history of Dino-Riders.

I still can't believe there hasn't been a DinoRoders reboot. In an age where there's everything from Tranafomers movies to a freaking Ouija movie, I'd think it would be a shoo-in. CGI dinosaurs, plus aliens, plus space ships, plus lasers and armor? Give this a $200 million budget right now!
Yes!!!!! I was OBSESSED with this franchise as a kid. Must have watched the promotional pilot VHS (which I still have and own) every day for several years to the point where I could recite the episode word for word even the included commercials. I wish I could easily re-acquire so many of these toys easily today! Great video as always man!
Did this with Codename Robotech..the launching pilot...watched it everyday for a year...was that obsessed
Absolutely the same here. That promotional VHS developed some serious wear.
That T-Rex toy was a great Christmas present when I was a kid.
I still have mine 😂
@@Davyartt I think my mom saved mine too lol
That's about the right amount of Peter Cullen and Frank Welker for a 80s cartoon
Only needed Casey Kasem to complete the 80's cartoons.
Mr. Majestic you're both right.
So glad to see Dinoriders get some attention! Not successful commercially, but I still hope for a resurgence to this day.
I loved Dino Riders. I actually had several of the toys.
Same
I’ve been re-acquiring my fave Dino-Riders for a couple years now; the only line I’ve tried to get MIB caliber pieces
Brontosaurus and T-Rex’s main armor pieces are fragile AF, but so worth it!
Just a few more dino’s to go and some rider figures and I’ll be done!
@@TheMulToyVerse I just found my old ones a few weeks ago!
@@TheMulToyVerse honestly of i blew my money on them....those are the two id get. Replace my lost to time and life diplodocus, and get the t rex i never owned.
And maybe....juat maybe a MIB of the larger dinosaur. Fuck i remember seeing that thing in a kbtoys and begging my mom for it and being told it was too expensive
What i would give to reopen the one i never got just for a brief reliving of my childhood.
@ I had the exact same as my parents would onky buy me the cheapest one
god I loved dinoriders, still got my toys and the 2 VHS tapes.
If Terra Nova had been this it might be still on the air. I do remember watching Dino-Riders, Dinosaucers, and Denver the Last Dinosaur as a kid.
My understanding was that Terra Nova was cancelled due to cost more than anything else
@@evilmark443 and not showing the dinosaurs i gave up on it
Man i liked that show :( i rewatch it from time to time on netflix and everytime i get pissed that it was cancelled.
Terra Nova was incredible
No Dinosaurs? (ABC, April 26, 1991 - November 10, 1995)
That was the best line from "Toy Story." I weep uncontrolably every time I hear it.
Dino Riders was THE best toy-line concept EVER! Period! How the hell could Tyco screw this up?! >:O
Not sure it was their fault. As a late 80’s property they faced a tremendous amount of competition including many that were already deeply entrenched in the toy aisle.
I had many Dino Rider toys as a kid, as did many of the other boys in my class. They were quite popular. I don't think it was an issue with competition, so much as money-management with the head office.
Seriously, if this had been Hasbro, Mattel, or even Kenner, Dino Rider would've been bigger than Transformers. This is all Tyco's fault!
@@captainsteroid2454 Can we have them do a crossover w/ Dinosaucers?
For one thing the novelty wears off after you get past the celebrity Dinos of wave one/two.
Distribution was an issue. Kaybee didn't carry them I do not think.
The large Dino's where super expensive. I remember Trex was $50-&70. Brontosaurus was $100!
Even the smallest sets where $10-$15. Average price of midsize Dino's was $25-$30.
This was a toyline designed for silver spoon kids.
They failed to harness the power of dinosaurs. I can only hope the same will never be said of me.
Remember having the VHS of the pilot episode when it was released in 87.Watched it over and over again.
I had this on VHS, but never got the toys sadly. More awesome childhood feels. 80s kids unite!
Funhaus! Talking Stalkings!! We love you James Willems!!!
Toy Galaxy is easily one of my favorite channels on UA-cam. Very informative with a catchy theme song
would you say that you love it 3000?
@@ranwolf7650
I'm not going to lie, I have no clue what that means. It is cool though to have a channel that talks about our favorite toys growing up, and explaining the history behind the toy line though. The fact that the toy molds for the Smithsonian dinosaurs came from Dino Riders was very interesting for me. If I ever take a trip to the Smithsonian, I'll probably pick one up just for that fact
@@mr7oclock346 It's an Endgame reference. I guess you haven't seen the movie
@@ranwolf7650
Comic movies are a hit and miss for me. So, I'm taking a break from them. I have followed comic books for a good while, and movies just are not as good. The Infinity War in the comics was good, but the movie was trash. They should have at least gave Thanos his own movies, and had him collect the Infinity Gems in the same way as in the comics, because that was epic.
I have read the spoilers, but nothing happened that we didn't see coming months back. We all knew that Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Downey Jr were unlikely to resign their contracts, and we knew what other characters were getting movies after End Game. So, we basically knew who was going to live and who was going to die. In the comics, we have seen Steve Rogers get old, and Sam Wilson has been Captain America got several years now. We have also seen Captain America wield Mjolnir in the comics a couple of times. This was Chris Evans last movie. So, they were trying to squeeze all that into the movie.
Comic movies just don't do it for me. I'll admit I like some of them, because Chris Pratt was also on Parks and Recreation, and Paul Rudd is awesome im everything he does, but for the most part I don't care about watching them anymore. You can't take decades worth of plot and compress it down to two of three hours and make it means nearly as much
@@mr7oclock346 "You can't take decades worth of plot and compress it down to two of three hours and make it means nearly as much" no one claimed other wise. I see the movies as just another example of the Marvel multiverse. Just as valid as Earth-616 or 1610.
Dinosaurs being used as weapons in an intergalactic war.
Seriously, how in the HELL did this never catch on.
I think people assumed it was just about dinosaurs and thought 'boring!'. They didn't realize the bigger picture was about futuristic armies and battles and war.
It came out right before dinosaurs had a mini resurgence. If this cake out a couple years later it would have been huge
I always blamed Questar’s stupid haircut. As the good leader, no one wanted to “be” him.
When I was a little kid I became obsessed with this stuff the moment I found out about it.
And when I was a teenager I made my own new versions of them for neighbour's kid, using his toy dinosaurs, some duct tape, some tiny sticks, and a little artistic creativity. And the kid loved them while they lasted.
@@dougmasters4579 future time travelling armies...
You know, if you told me that Frank Welker actually voiced every single cartoon character in the 80s, and that all those other actors were just pseudonyms he was using to get around some weird actors guild rules about how many times an actors name can appear in the credits, I'd probably believe you.
I watched this so much when I was a kid, I couldn't believe when I found out how few episodes there were. Had a bunch of the toys... really wish I still had them.
DinoRiders, the toys so expensive you don't even ask for them.
everybody's pretty quiet about that fact. It's part why the toys are kind of obscure for the 1980s. They were crazy expensive. Can't believe I'm saying this with a straight face. I've got a Cadillacs and dinosaurs figure in the package unopened sitting next to 2 dino riders dinosaurs that I got at yard sales. I've also got the pterodactyl with the saddle and two action figures from the series that I found that other yard sales . I never got any of the big dino riders toys to this day because they were so expensive that they never turned up at yard sales and screw eBay there prices are ridiculous. I've got the DHS pilot of the first episode and were talking the really crude version that has sound effects missing and all sorts of other issues LOL. If I'm correct the version I have is a studio draft pilot might not even be the original pilot that was released in stores. I don't understand why the 14th episode was not released on DVD with the rest of the series.
I had the Triceratops and pterodactyl and a few of the figures.
I had Dino riders toys
Agreed, I used to love looking at the packages in the stores though.
I had a shit load of these as a kid.
(And as I watch this video, Bone Age toys too. )
Edit: I suppose being an only child had it perks.
I still remember taking my Diplodocus to 2nd grade show-&-tell, and no other classmate being able to bring any toy that came close to being that cool for the rest of that school year.
Don't forget about the TOY STORY THAT TIME FORGOT T.V. special -- Trixie the Tricertops gets armor and missiles and Rex gets robot arms -- all clearly inspired by DinoRiders.
I bet Tyco were kicking themselves they didn't get that sweet Jurassic Park license to reuse those molds again. Kenner the hell out of those molds :D
Undoubtedly.

We haven't but it's a good idea. I'll put it on the list for sure!
I absolutely love this show and all the toys. I had some of the Smithsonian re releases. These were such high detail
Thank you so much for the ♥️
That VHS pilot is the only reason I became aware of Dino-Riders as a kid. I watched that countless times, including the commercials.
I remember watching this VHS tape in the 80s over my friend Chris Gooch's house, I loved watching the TYCO toy commercials at the beginning. Eventually my mom bought me the VHS tape and some Dino-Riders figures at a store similar to TJ Maxx, but she vacuumed up all the guns. I really liked how the dino eyes looked so real.
Just imagine what Mattel can do with the Jurassic Park dino toys that are producing currently rebranded in to Dino-Riders!!!!!
The clip of Jem walking into the wall over and over is what did it for me!! 🤣🤣🤣
Seeing funhaus on here with talking stalkings is a most welcome surprise.
When I was around 8 my friend Shaun with a rich Dad had all the largest Dino-Riders. Walking Brontosaurus etc, I was slightly jealous and thought they were the coolest toys ever!
1. Nice use of the Tiny Fuppets
2. Now I can’t wait for Dinosaucers

Great vid guys! Man, my brother and I LOVED Dino-Riders! So many dinos in this video from my childhood. We were also into the transforming Dinobones ones, and they were awesome too! The firing mechanisms were really powerful. All this dino hype well before Jurassic Park. When the JP commercial hit we lost it! Video taped it and played it over and over.
Big Time Let Down😀
4:34 Gem & Centurions sounds like a really weird spin-off, but I'd watch a couple episodes
Great video Dan! I love the history series.
It's such a shame that the glut of toylines in the late 80s killed so many awesome ideas. Dino-Riders were a great line and should have been far more successful.
Man if DinoRiders, Street Sharks, or Battletoads don't get a reboot toyline in the next two years, I'm just giving up.
I never even had any DinoRiders or Street Sharks, but I'd love to see ToyGalaxy cover them.
@@knyght27 they already did that
Microsoft are making a new Battletoads game, so who knows?!
I had that pilot VHS! I haven’t thought of these in years. I don’t remember the show much beyond the vhs, but it was very cool!
I had the T-Rex as a kid. Wish I still had it!
I love that quirkinesses of Dino-Riders 😋 they were not the best toys but they were tons of fun...specially when I mix M.A.S.K. On a time travel story I was playing 😂...come to think about it 🤔 they never got back to their time 🤨...oh oh! 😳
Great video Mr Larson, Producer Greg 👍🏽✌🏽
Bob Bakker was involved!? Holy shit... he's my favorite paleontologist! And yes, I have a favorite paleontologist.
Doesn't everybody?
I thought the same thing, but knowing that Dr. Bakker was involved makes the highly active theropods make much more sense now.
@@stevendorries it doesn't explain the lumbering. tail dragging T.Rex though.
@ superspecky4eyes: No, but the designer insisting on including the walking gimmick and the subsequent need for extra stability probably do :)
superspecky4eyes hard to break that image, but don’t forget that the T. Rexes in the show were depicted as dedicated parents too.
Recent tidying of my old room back at my parents' house means I have several Dino Riders on my shelf right now ^_~ 'twas an excellent line.
Dino Riders are when I realized Frank Welker was everywhere, even if I didn't know who he was at the time.
Also, for anyone looking for the toys-the elastic bands/straps that secure the armor bits on the dinosaurs become dry and brittle after a few decades, so check with any sellers before buying!
Knowing toys are made of crude oil, the commodification of what are more or less dinosaur fossils into dinosaur toys is the most fitting thing ever
Peter Cullen, the legend of voice acting, also Frank Welker.
I remember going to FAO Schwartz for one Christmas and I saw a massive Dino Rider display (similar to the traveling Masters of the universe setup). I thought that must be the coolest job to create action figure displays for customers.
That clip of JEM killed me. 😂
A fantastic, if somewhat fragile line of toys.
Is it me, or is that Pat 'Bravestarr' Fraley voicing that commercial?
Funny, I thought it sounded like Dirk Courage (Dan Gilvezan)
@@jedigecko06 I think he did a lot of the earlier commercials, as he was the voice of Questar, but I definitely think that this one is Fraley. It sounds very similar to Max Ray from Centurions.
I cant believe in one time I almost had the entire complete toy collection only miss just 2 to complete it. Great toys and Cartoon
Love Dino-Riders! Great video guys. Keep up the awesome work
love the Toy Galaxy videos. Dan Larson has amazing eyebrows.
Dino-Riders was a great show, and awesome toys. Wish I still had my toys.
I loved this toyline when I was a kid! My parents were only able to get me a raptor, but I used to spend a lot of time staring at them in the store. Still hoping for a proper reboot of this line, even at smaller (new) Diaclone -esque scale.
Love the Funhaus Talking Stalkings shout out!
Dino riders had the best toy commercials ever made.
I still miss my Triceratops that came with Hammerhead and Sidewinder.
This series!!! Yes!! So good! I was so envious of my cousin who got the T-Rex and the Bronto?? Meanwhile I got the tiny sets...
Yesss!!! I've been waiting for this one! Thank you! I'm from "across the pond", but spent the summer in USA the year they were released, and I remember DinoRiders fondly. We were buying them and carrying them around the country, and then flying a bunch of them back home. Back home they were not available, so it became a unique toy that only me and my brother had.
It's official, we need to talk about Robocop next.
I had a lot of these as a kid. I was really weirded out by seeing the Smithsonian versions in toy aisles in my 20s
I wish i could like this video 20 times for the clip of Funhaus. not only made me nostalgic for dino riders but also good ole funhaus before they lost Papa Bruce , Lawrence, and Adam.... and a 3rd nostalgia for bone age... its a nostalgia filled episode
I had so many of these as a kid.
Yet another youtube vid that makes me realized I've gotten old.
Bravo my friend. Bravo
I loved this toyline. i even had a wholelot of the iceage stuff
Very cool toys I have most of the humans and humanoid figures still. I remember buying 2 packs of em at the dollar store along with 2 pack dinosaur cassette tapes for Soundwave. Oh and than there were battlebeasts. I love those little army builder kinda stuff
I had that long-legged prehistoric boar toy when I was a kid, but I never had any idea that it was from DinoRiders! That's one of the things I love about this channel.
Battlesaurs! Battesaurs! Battlesaurs!
Of course now a days you can build Dino-Riders out of Legos. It's just a matter of build battle pods to connect with a lego T-rex or stego. Personally, I've been picking up Jurassic Park Roarivores to pit against my Dinobots and Terrorcons. A fun time to get into toys.
I looked thru your videos last night to see if you’d done one about Dino Riders.
.......LAST NIGHT! HOW DID YOU KNOW. O_o
Ahhh the Torosaurus with Gunner and Magnus...
Ya know, all of us that LOVED this when we were puppies, are now adults! Let's get active and bring this back!!!!
This was such an awesome toy line!
I would loved to see a reboot version of this franchise with a more apropriate proportion dinosaurs. No I'm not talking about given them all feathers! I mean the T-Rex having a straight back!
Man, Frank Welker and Peter Cullen are just destined to battle until the end of time, hu?
I applaud you getting through that intro without cracking up
I would KILL to work on a new Dino Riders comic series. This was a major part of my childhood, as the giant electronic T. rex was formative childhood memory and one of my favorite all-time Christmas presents. I still have my old VHS as well!
Your parents must have been well off or they loved you a lot! I remember seeing the T-rex in a glass case at the mall when I was young. I only got the triceratops and pterodactyl.
I wondered if these came out b4 Cadillacs & Dinosaurs
These toys were absolutely amazing. It screamed something special. Packaging. Details on the toys. Perfect. And I never even seen the cartoon
Funny story is that I had the first episode VHS as a kid. The recording had no vocals but still had all the laser blasts, dino noises, and other sounds. I think we even exchanged it for another VHS and had the same results. I just though they talked to each other telepathically and that's why there were no voices. I dont even know if I still have that tape or not.
I loved that toyline! I liked Dinosaurs as a kid, so mix them with Aliens and that's a winner to me! I had the T-Rex among others from the line.
Thank you so much for doing this. Dinoriders were some of my absolute favorites.
This was the series I have been waiting for you to cover. I just sold the last piece of my DR collection about a month ago, and seriously considered just sending it your way before listing it.
Warms my heart to see all the comments of people who grew up just like I did loving Dino Riders.
This was one of my absolute favorite lines. I'm so tempted to buy em all on ebay.
A word of advice from someone who has been there, these are very tough to get complete for a good price. The armour pieces were made of quite brittle plastic and are often broken or missing now. Still, it was a fun chase getting the full first series.
...not to mention those rubber harnesses that inevitably perish!
@@yunoyuluvit Yeah, not a chance. At least rubber bands work ok.
Thanks Guys, I'm well aware. Sure would love the license to be picked up for reissues. @@gibbie80s61
@@andrewthielmann5342 That would be great.
Glad that Imaginext got a shout out. Their dino toys, even before the JP license, were always top notch.
I had me some of both Dino Riders and Bone Age toys, loved them both
I saw an ad for this in a magazine back in the day and immediately set out to turn each and every dinosaur figure I had into one of those “dinoriders” using lego. The cartoon didn’t air until years later, but that one image from the ad was fuel enough.
With Dinoriders being owned by Mattel, imagine a reboot of the line using Mattel's Jurassic World dinos.
This is a thing that must happen.
They did have some Dinorider inspired Imaginext from Fisher-Price about 5 years back. Dinos with armor and human companions, maybe that was the primer?
Old vs new.

Who really thinks about the afterlives of stories? I'd say the series seems to end with the Ice Age in wave and story. It would be safe to say that one of the stories from my childhood ended with everyone dying.
loved this show as a kid
I had that first VHS tape and loved it. I especially remember the "Take On Me"-style black-and-white rotoscoping at the beginning, and the blinking eye 2001: A Space Odyssey homage as the T-Rex is freed from his mind control.
I would create my own dino-rides out of clay and a rubber dinosaur

and Dan will be played in this episode by both Peter Cullen and Frank Welker
This toy line was probably the only toy line I completed back then. Wow, thanks for the memories!
I loved Dino riders so much, I can’t believe there were so few episodes.
To be fair, compared to my 80's family, Robocop was rated G, lol!
Came for dinos, stayed for the Funhaus plug
It’s almost 3am and I’m on a Dino riders binge. My favorite toy line when I was a kid. By far
Oh man been waiting for you to do Dinoriders since I found the channel. Had a bunch of them as a kid and always loved the idea of Dinosaurs plus lasers. Thanks for the episode.
Robocop had some pretty grim scenes in it, such as the one you depicted with the junior staffer getting ventilated by the ED-209.... but that scene was actually much worse than people realize. The version in the theatre that we’re all familiar with was actually edited down from an extended version in order to get the film’s rating down from X to an R. That full scene is actually available for viewing on UA-cam, but be warned... it’s not for the faint of heart.
The actor suffered minor burns from all squibs used.
Robocop would've been a much better film if it wasn't so gratuitous. The overall concept of a cyborg cop in the future is amazing, just a shame it had to be such a cold and mean spirited film.
@@dougmasters4579 It's supposed to be over-the-top satire. Likewise Starship Troopers. If you want bland kid-friendly action, watch the third movie. If you want brooding action, watch Ghost in the Shell. If you want depression, watch Appleseed.
@@CTimmerman I like violent action films like the original Rambo's and Terminator (1984). Robocop's violence and tone has always set it apart. Verhoeven's films are technically outstanding but lack warmth.
