    First off, let me just say that I love AfterBuzz TV and your take on the episodes always make my week! Now, as for dancing, Amy and Derek owned the night! I was so shocked that they didn't receive a 10! Meryl and Maks, while I love them, that foxtrot did not feel like one. As much as I thought it was beautifully choreographed, I thought it was really 8 material. Charlie & Sharna and James & Peta were the most entertaining dancers of the night, Cody & Whitney were truly impressive with their fusion-styled jazz, and NeNe I think truly improved this week. Candace & Mark had a good jive, but they need to go for the more challenging routines cause she can handle it. I was sad that Billy Dee & Emma couldn't dance, but I believe it was his time to leave because he was truly struggling and it was tough to watch him dance. Drew & Cheryl, should've been all 8s, and Danica & Val were truly incredible! Val has a knack for contemporary, it just shows! To cap it all off, love Dancing with the Stars, love AfterBuzz TV, and I love all of you! Anna, Suri, Kristyn, Julz, and Jake when he gets back, I love you all and your opinions on every dance! Keep doing what you're doing, it's incredible!

      I disagree about Candace. Candace could not handle this basic jive she was given so a more advanced jive would not have been good either. I think mark is doing right by not giving her more challenging dances because their is nothing challenging about her moves quite yet.

      Nana Osei-Tutu I disagree with you about Meryl & Maks' dance, their Foxtrot was beautifully choreographed and the connection & emotion between them just made that piece even better. As for whether or not it was an actual foxtrot, for me it was, but it was more like an American smooth foxtrot, and not a traditional foxtrot, but american smooth or not, it was still a foxtrot. I think it definitely deserved the 10s, the choreography was beautiful & spot on and the emotional connection was there. Dancing is not just about movement, it's also about the emotions & chemistry too, if a dance has no emotional connection or chemistry, then it's just a bunch of steps. Dancing needs that emotional connection & chemistry in order to be truly meaningful. And that foxtrot piece with M&M was not only beautiful to watch, it was also emotionally meaningful.

    Well, Meryl (and Charlie!) have already hit the road to do three shows and meet and greets a week for Stars on Ice so I kind of doubt we'll see her pushed to the level some of the pros are hoping for. Since Anna worked with Evan, I'd love it if she talked about what working around Stars on Ice was like with him (back then it was twice as many shows + two episodes a week, though) and how it might affect the performances and rehearsal time for both M and C? I'd love to hear her thoughts.
    I was surprised Derek and Amy didn't get any 10s, as well.
    Paul is on point about Charlie. I've watched him and Meryl for years, and I think the dance was so difficult that you could see Charlie thinking through it. Usually the expression that performance called for would be second nature to him.
    I love all the BTS details about Drew covering his ears and Meryl and Maks warming up super seriously and seperately! Interesting about the partners being unexpected, guess all the clutter on everyone's twitter feeds was for completely no reason, grrr.
    p.s. I was someone who left a (respectful) comment about this last week, and I just want to say I have zero issues with Maks being criticized. But last week Suri used any chance to work in a dig about Maks, even to his former partner who seemed moved to defend him + she brought him up during Derek's commentary unfairly and unnecessarily imo. That was the only reason I was moved to comment on it.

    Loved Merly and Maks. Their chemistry is palpable, I felt the intimacy and the tension they created. The dance was beautiful I just felt like this was another level.

    I waited whole night for this. Hope Anna could make some comments on James and Peta's jive. I thought Meryl's foxtrot is a little bit over scored and Charlie's jive is a little bit under scored, maybe the scores would be different if they used .5 score pads like in all star season. Love all you guys especially Anna, hope Anna could be guest judge some time.

    What I love the most about Dancing With The Stars above the dancing is the stories of the celebrities. Since I've been watching a lot of the celebrities I was familiar with but didn't know their individual stories, tragedies and triumphs. Like Kellie Pickled and Zendaya as as I got to see them dance each week I grew to love them more and more. Jack, Bill Engvall, Corbin and Amber last season. I wasn't familiar with Amy, Charlie and Meryl before the season and now I'm invested in their stories. This season will ultimately come down to the freestyle, who can surprise us and stand out!!!!!

    great show as usual! I agree with Julx about Charlie! I did not see any off timing, it was great! James on the other hand went off timing! Anna, please be on time ! LOL! I think Anna was very straight forward, and her description is once again flawless: a lyrical waltzy foxtrot. Amazing. Amy is outstanding, and Derek is always amazing, but I find myself rooting for others more this season. Still, Derek's choreography and dances are always something to look forward. I'm very excited about the switch up! See you guys next week! PS- Can you get Artem Chigvintsev on the show? He was an amazing pro on scd, and I love watching him on the troupe!

      Sharna Burgess and Charlie a White were so on point for me!!! Sharna's choreography and her usage of backstage and using as much of the floor was fantastically unique. Charlie White can move!!! So happy for them both.

    Haha! Another fun episode! Been looking forward to it since Monday 'cos it was a great show with such beautiful dancing from everyone. I feel you all touched on the extra details -Amy, Meryl especially, so I won't hoard the comment section this week like I did last week ;)
    Paul was a really good guest. Very insightful remarks and I agree about Charlie (who's my fave this season after Amy). I find I look forward to James now too. I hope Paul comes back again as a guest.
    Btw, it would be such a waste to just listen to the podcast because one would miss all of Julz' faces lol and all you guys' antics. Definitely listen/watch podcasts and UA-cam or at least UA-cam imo :)

    How on earth did Amy not get a 10? I at least was expecting one from Robin. And what Derek said was so beautiful. Not going to lie, I wasn't always a big Derek fan, but I'm a converter. The choreography he did was absolutely gorgeous. If anyone ever asks me how movement can express emotion, I will point them to that dance. Simply breathtaking.

      That is why disagreed with the panel when they said robin was a good guest judge because she wasnt to me. Yes, she sounds articulate and all but she gave nothing and voted with the rest, no opinion of her own. Why didnt she give amy and derek 10 what did she see so wrong? Im ready for them to have a guest judge on their that is not afraid to have their own opinion and give their own scores.

    • @iamlinda100
      @iamlinda100 10 років тому +3

      Amy did not get a 10 because she was not a very technical dancer, even Danica has better techniques. And although the choreography was beautiful, I think she should've done more dancing, for many of the dances she did in s18, she was pretty much being lifted or carried by Derek half the time. IMO that dance was not worth a 10, if you just look at Amy's technique in it, so the 9s were spot on, and really, getting 9s is already a great score for someone with a disability like Amy. But I think as a performance piece overall, then yes I probably would've given it a 10, but technically no, 9s is what it should get.

    • @mariandragalescufan
      @mariandragalescufan 10 років тому +2

      I actually completely agree with you. I got so swept up in the emotion of her package that of course I wanted a 10! But as the season progressed, I realized exactly what you were saying. I understand she has limitations, but the celebrities never catch a break from the judges when they're injured so I don't think Amy should necessarily catch a break either. When I say that I feel like a horrible person though.

    I agree that if the last two dances could have switched the overall effect might have been better, but I think they put Candace's jive at last because of the round stage. Every time pros want to use the round stage (Shawn and Derek's titanic rumba, Kelly and Val's Rumba) it's always the last performance of the night.

    • @KristynBurtt
      @KristynBurtt 10 років тому +2

      There were also 170 extras portraying the crowd. That also added to the issue on having to load them in and out.

    • @putUincespence
      @putUincespence 10 років тому +2

      Just FYI - Shawn & Derek's Titanic rumba wasn't the last one of the night on the night it was performed. It was the 2nd of 4 regular routines, followed by the "Gangnam Style" team dance. Also, Kelly & Val's dance wasn't performed on the round stage - it was performed on the floor, just surrounded by lightboxes.

    Thank you, guys, from Hong Kong. A great show. I think you touched on everything. I did tweet Anna asking for her impression of James & Peta's jive since she arrived late and couldn't tell us ... Last thing: Let's not overblow the Sean thing. People.com gave him credibility -- why? It's not as if he had the personality to win people over, as evidenced by the lack of votes. Let it go.

    • @KristynBurtt
      @KristynBurtt 10 років тому +4

      We aren't overblowing it…every media outlet is covering the Sean story in the U.S.. It's interesting that behind the scenes producers stuff is being uncovered this season…definitely a hot topic worth talking about. Thanks for watching! :)

    • @kokoken1
      @kokoken1 10 років тому +1

      Kristyn Burtt I'm sorry, Kristyn, but I don't agree. This is a classic case of New York-based media trying to make a bigger deal out of something that most of the country couldn't care less about. Do you remember hearing about the Amy Fisher "Long Island Lolita" story in 1992? If that happened in Boise, Idaho, it wouldn't have been nearly as big a story. Same in this instance. Trust me, the topic isn't that hot. He'll talk to anyone who'll listen. I think you'll find that for all of Sean's blather, he wasn't worth keeping, anyway. Now, if someone uncovers proof that Sean didn't have the lowest combined total of judges' scores and votes, that's different. As it is, all you have are sour grapes.

    • @KristynBurtt
      @KristynBurtt 10 років тому +1

      wkyken I respect that you don't agree. My day job is an entertainment reporter and everyone (not just me) is chasing this story about manipulations on the show behind the scenes…not just with Sean Avery's ousting, but with voting and other shenanigans. So, hopefully you see more info in the coming weeks. :)

    • @putUincespence
      @putUincespence 10 років тому +3

      wkyken Sorry, but I don't think your logic holds up here - and the comparison to Amy Fisher isn't really apt. People would not be listening to Sean in the first place if there wasn't some sort of merit to his claim - I know for a fact that the double elimination was not supposed to occur until much later in the season. Why move it up, unless there was some sort of strategy behind it? And I don't believe for one second that Karina's fans didn't muster up the votes to stay past week 1 - she's arguably the most popular current female pro on the show. The whole thing reeks of suspicion and I don't blame Sean for speaking out. You're entitled to your opinion, wkyken, but you don't speak for everyone. Trust ME - the topic IS that hot for some of us. Whether Sean was worth keeping or not has nothing to do with it - if the rules were broken in order to eliminate him in an unfair manner, then it's newsworthy. Period.

    Also, I'm very curious about the next few weeks for Charlie and Meryl because they are going on ice tour. Maybe less time will impact them...

  • @JessieBanana
    @JessieBanana 10 років тому +9

    I think for Meryl it was smart for there to be openness in this dance for expression. If you follow Meryl and Charlie, you know they don't reveal as much as other people in interview and you see that restraint in the package. By choreographing the touching moment in, Meryl doesn't get lost amongst the more emotional pieces like Charlie did.
    There are things Meryl could have brought up, like her dyslexia and how that slows her ability to learn routines and her vision problems. It's amazing the trust she has to put her partners for lifts and what not, considering how poor her depth perception is.
    I think Maks deserves just as much benefit of the doubt as Mark got last week, in terms of having to choreograph to the music.
    I feel like Amy's 9s were fair. Her dances are great and the judges don't critique her, but she isn't dancing at the same level as others. The judges don't say anything, because what would they say? Pointing out the obvious is mean, she's well aware of her limitations. I don't think she could do what she's doing any better, but at what point to the scales become more uniform on this show? Should Amy get a 10 for emotional response?
    I really liked Drew this week. He captured the essence of the dance and his posture was fantastic.

    • @KristynBurtt
      @KristynBurtt 10 років тому +2

      Jessie, you make a great point about the judging. Are the scores bases on technique or emotion or both? DWTS has never really clarified that and we always debate that topic.

    • @naty04191
      @naty04191 10 років тому +2

      it's not just about the emotion though! Amy has been dancing at the edge of her ability and even past it every week! the technique in her cha cha was excellent as well as in the swing dance! of course she can't do flips and other stuff that other celebrities are doing but what she's doing she's doing at a very good level. Anna is right… for Meryl's ability, she did not master the technique of the foxtrot perfectly in her footwork so the judges also latched on to the emotion she portrayed in the dance (which she's an already an expert at doing!). Amy did deserve a 10 for that dance! her lifts were executed smoothly and she did the whole dance on pointed prosthetic legs so the technique is definitely there as well as the emotion which is just as important!

      Wow I didn't know that Meryl had so many problems she didn't bring up. It makes me so much more impressed and love her. So many people use their sob stories to propel themselves

    • @JessieBanana
      @JessieBanana 10 років тому +3

      Natalia P I'm just going to have to agree to disagree. She has absolutely no floor coverage, which is a factor in maintaining perfect technique, Derek carries her around half the time, and they don't include many basic movements of certain dances, because of her inability to do them. Like I said, what she's doing is great. It's just not on the same level as everyone else.

  • @izzyyen8474

    I think that since last weeks dance was so athletic, maks chose this week to be more emotional, especially with the theme and music.

    I wonder if Carrie Ann's feeling that Charlie was off-time may also.have to do with his very easy-peasy demeanor. I remember Tristan saying last year in reference to a similar situation with Bill Engvall that some dancers, himself included, have a more easy vibe, so even if they're on time they don't have that stop-on-a-hot-dime sharpness that Val and Sasha have, so in comparison it looks like they are lagging.

    Same thoughts as caitiedidit I wonder how Meryl and Charlie would cope with the schedule since Im guessing the Ice dancing and requirements they have might be more priority? And like another comment here and Ive been seeing online , I do think Meryl's was a bit overscored, yes that was a great foxtrot and Charlie underscored, he did a awesome job at jive too. Plus how the heck did Amy have no 10 after that?

    Shoot! I know I said I wasn't going to hoard the comments section but I forgot to add one thing about the switch. So, I know from having kept up with the unofficial tracking of the hashtags that Meryl was either getting Derek or Val. They were in the majority with Derek leading last I saw. However, Derek has creative oversight for the huge performance next week so lets just say that I doubt he'll be hitting the road with Meryl even if fans want it to happen. The same applies to Charlie. I'd guess his partner probably won't have a big role in next week's huge number so even if hashtags pick someone (and the person's already a big part of the production, tptb can easily switch that to someone else. So, I feel bad for all the people who spent all week spamming timelines on twitter lol! Obviously I have no inside knowledge of any of these things. It's all pure conjecture on my part :D

    I agree with Anna on Meryl's footwork and I thought I'd be the only one! Meryl is beautiful, but she takes to many steps in transitions sometimes, I think. To me it looks like she's almost stumbling. It might be getting used to the floor rather than ice because in previous weeks I was seeing Charlie do the same thing. I loved their piece though.

    about Meryl and Maks
    i partly agree with Kristyn and Anna in that i did not like the choreography and i know that meryl is capable of so much more. Maks can take it up a notch and show us what she can do.
    on the other hand, i agree with Paul about the possibility that Maks is approaching this strategically. Maks knows that he can either play up her strength or artistry and he decided to go with artistry. most likley because Charlie and a few others have good technique too.

      Too be honest, I wish anna would shutup about maks. Would she even say this stuff to his face? Anna is the last person that needs to talk about choreography. She is not good choreographer herself. Yes, she did some good work with evan but overall there is nothing exciting about her work as a choreographer. I think the last two dances that maks have given meryl have showcased her skills perfectly, so I really dont know what they want from him but to be petty. I really think the panel, especially anna and suri are trying to keep finding ways to see something wrong every week with maks choreography.

    LOL this lady please don't say there is no proper technique to contemporary. Contemporary remains a shortened form of contemporary ballet and therefore has technique based on ballet. Mia Michaels does a great speech about the difference between watered down contemporary which mimics common actions and formal contemporary which has a strong technical foundation

    I for one am not surprised that Sean Avery did not last as long as Billy Dee Williams. Sean's fanbase is the hockey world, a world in which he is not well-liked. There are some comments that are harder to recover from than others. Furthermore, the comment that he is known for is offensive to women, and most of the hockey fans who watch DWTS are women. One can also see what kind of attitude he has by how he has been reacting since not being on DWTS. In the end, Billy Dee has more fans. Did I immediately think of Sean and feel bad for him when Billy Dee announced his withdrawal from the show? Yes, because Sean was the better dancer and could have had that extra week. But as this show has shown in the past, fan votes matter more than actual dancing ability. Sometimes votes and dance ability align, and sometimes they do not.

      I'm not that surprised either. I think he would have been out Week 3 with a normal elimination. They just decided to go with a double elimination making it all the more dramatic.

      I actually read a rumor saying that the show's producer Conrad Green was annoyed with Sean's arrogant attitude & wanted him kicked off the show and that's 1 of the main reasons he decided to do a double eliminiation, so that they can get rid of Sean asap, and not just because they wanted to create drama for the show. I'm not sure how accurate that rumor is but that's just what I heard. Personally, I wish Billy Dee got kicked off instead of Diana...BD could barely walk let alone dance...but the hardcore Star Wars fans obviously voted for him like crazy that week. So disappointed.

    Interestingly, Tom said that the most popular switch up pairing is Amy & Mark although that may change... But I highly doubt that's true and Tom is just stirring up the pot.

      I know this is a late reply but I just wanted to clarify that Tom actually said Amy+Mark was 1 OF the popular switch up pairings fans had voted for, not that they were "the" most popular. The most popular switch up pairing was actually Meryl+Derek.

    What is Carrie Ann's deal with the critics this cycle? I think that she could be drooling all over the hunks like James and Cody. My gut tells me they will make it to the final 4. I think the final 2 will be Meryl and Charlie. I agree with Julz I went back and rewatched Charlie and Sharna and I didn't see the arms. I think if Billy would have left last week, Sean would still be in the competition. I also agree with Anna, I think the scores were too damn nice. Some of them didn't deserve it.

      Ahh, cody is not a hunk, sorry. The kid is not attractive at all but he can dance well and that is all that matters.

      I was just saying that when it comes to the attractive men on the panel, they could do the slightest thing with the arm like Charlie and get 10s when Charlie would get a 7. I think Cody and James have the teen fan base covered and that is why I think they would make it to the semifinals at least.

      I think Cody is quite cute, he and James have different types of attractive look I think, to me, James is more of the hunky type while Cody is more of the cute type. But they both have their own attractiveness.

    Loved the after show tonite. I agree with almost everything everyone had to say. Personally Amy and Derek were my favorites this night. I'm falling in love with Amy more and more. I do agree that Maks can push Meryl more but you don't want her to peak too early like Zendaya did season 16/I loved Zendaya the whole way thru but by the end she didn't have anything original to give to beat out Kellie's freestyle. Personally think the competition from now should be straight forward in that whoever is the weakest/lowest couples should go home or if something disastrous happens. NeNe, Drew and Cody should be the next few in my opinion even tho I really like each of them. Then the competition will heat up between Meryl, Charlie, Amy, Danica, James and Candice. Let me know what you guys think. Twitter @trinibwoy27

    Again, I think that Sean's personality in the first week hurt him overall. He was not that warm, and it came across in his package. People respond to those entertainers who seem likeable. Sean did not come across that way. He just didn't.

    I think you all were praising danica and val contemporary too much. It was kinda a snoozefest compared to other contemporary numbers I have seen this season and other seasons. I mean her story was touching but I felt little emotion and performance quality out of this routine. To me it was lazy choreography and performance quality. She is kinda unforgettable if you ask me. I almost forgot about her in the switch.

      trinibwoy27 I dont even see her as a finalist. She is boring and forgettable. I mean she offers nothing. Cody, NeNe, and James could easily beat her out of being a finalist just because they are making a better impression than she is and they dont even have the experience she has. She is kinda hidden in the background and needs something to make her pop but that is going to have to be up to val on what to do with her to make her shine more.

      vdw8420031 Danica was 1 of the better celeb dancers technically, and there were not alot of particularly good dancers in season 18, some were really mediocre at dancing and some were just bad. So I think Danica contributed alot to the show, for just being 1 of the better dancers in that season. I watch DWTS mainly for the dancing more than anything else, so for me, Danica definitely deserved to be in the finals, certainly more so than Candice, Nene, Cody, James & alot of others, just because she is a better technical dancer than them. Danica, Meryl and Charlie were the best technical dancers in season 18, and if the voters were to only vote based on the dancing, then Danica & Charlie would've been in the finals with Meryl instead of Candice & Amy.
