The tree looks beautiful! My family decorated the tree on December 7, which was our mother's birthday. She would have frozen the leftover turkey and made turkey soup as my brother and I decorated the tree! The aromas were wonderful and the soup made a perfect and comforting lunch after all our decorating on a cold winter day here in Chicago.

The tree looks stunning - and adding some of the old red decorations were the right way to go - love the baskets at the bottom of the tree too. My parents ALWAYS put the tree up the Saturday before Christmas Eve - I loved it. Plus my mother and I used to go to lunch at Harrods on the 1st day of December and I was allowed to pick a beautiful bauble each year. Mum also had a beautiful set of 6 Waterford Crystal baubles - that I now have on my tree ❤

I smiled when, after putting up the beautiful ornaments you bought this year, the red ones turned up. I saw myself in the story. So I'll share my funny story. So when I was a kid, we always had a real, classic Christmas tree with red and gold ornaments. When I got older, I asked my mom why we didn't try other colors? She said it was because to her, those colours are the colours of Christmas, and when I have my own home, I can have any tree I want. The first year I moved, I bought blue and silver ornaments just before Christmas to prove to her that there is life beyond gold and red. My tree was beautiful, perfect, elegant and terribly cold. It was like an ice queen. But of course I couldn't admit to myself that I didn't want it and I miss the warm atmosphere, the shiny, classic colours. The following year I found myself hunting for red and gold ornaments in every shop during the festive season. That's when I realized that the family tradition was so burned into me that it was pointless to defy it. Every year from then on, I would have beautiful red and gold glass ornaments on my tree, and my mom would just smile gently when she saw my tree wrapped in the family classics. :)

Balsam Hill is the best of the best. It will be with you for a very, very long time. The tree is gorgeous on its own and even more elegant with your decorations. I love to sit with a cup of tea in the evening with all the lights off except the tree, soft Christmas music drifting in the background. The red was needed, perfect touch. As a child I felt it was my duty to rearrange at least one tree ornament a day.

We don't have a tree because we have a cottage so there's not enough space, so I use garlands on the fireplace and top of the dresser and decorate them with traditional decorations and ribbons.

Your tree turned out lovely! I especially love the red roses you added. I smiled when you said you’re the kind of person who analyzes every bauble and keeps removing and putting them back on. I’m the exact same way! I also enjoyed hearing how you decorated the tree growing up with your family. As a mother to young children now, I fight my inner perfectionist and try my best to allow my children to decorate the tree how they like. They feel so proud of their work when it’s all done, and honestly I find it more charming. Sometimes it’s messy, but sometimes they have really great ideas I wouldn’t have thought of! :) It’s sweet hearing your memories of your own parents not being “too precious” about it. I hope to give my children those same happy memories.

Thank you, Nicolas, for sharing this beautiful moment. It is gorgeous and so uplifting! When I was young, my parents struggled a little bit, and I remember our Christmas tree was always a little bit thin and the ornaments unremarkable. The joy in my house was no less, and even though the trees were very modest, we were always happy. I always wanted a "perfect tree". In my twenties I vowed to build a glorious ornament collection to pass down to my children one day so I started collecting them, with one really nice once a year. I built a beautiful collection of ornaments and they have run with it. Now that they are grown, I do something different. I dig out old photos from when they were little children, often making funny faces, and general sibling shenanigans. A store here in the States has these lovely little photo frame ornaments with the year 2022 on a little dangling charm hanging off of it. Very pretty & elegant...and in goes the goofy childhood pictures. The memories are precious and they are packaged up perfectly for the tree. My grown children love them and we are greatly enjoying this new tradition!

Nicolas, your tree looks really beautiful and the hotel suite was amazing. Lucky you. I agree that gloves are the way to go when fluffing up a Christmas tree. Last year I fluffed up my tree without gloves, the next morning I noticed that the diamond was missing from my engagement ring! 😱 I searched high and low for the diamond, vacuumed every rug, my husband removed the U-bends under every sink in the house to no avail. The whole of December I kept wondering if the diamond was in the tree 🤔 On 1 January I couldn’t bear it any longer, I just had to look for the diamond in the tree so I took all the decorations off and shook the tree like a mad woman. I nearly gave up. I gave it one more massive shake and there it was!! The diamond…it fell onto the floor!! 🥳💍 I was so happy and it was a great start to the New Year! 👌🏼

Children. There's nothing more magical than decorating a stunning, sumptuous, extravagantly decorated tree, then bringing in the wee ones. The looks on their cherubim faces, the little mouths opened in awe, then seeing them sit down in front of the tree and looking up in wonder - pointing out this bauble, and that glittering, sparkling something - is pure joy. Add some wondrous Christmas carols, Christmas cookies with hot cocoa, and there are few more perfect moments in life.

There are 2 trees in our home. A white one with all gold ornaments from our travels and life events adorns our living room. In addition, it spins! A green tree is in our family room and is dedicated to our children. The tree is surrounded by a train and animated Christmas figures on a snow scene. This has been tradition in our home, since our children were very little.

Your new tree looks so well made and how nice that they even included storage bags - better than the old sheets I wrap mine in :). I am glad you added the pops of red along with your new gold baubles. I have a faux tree that has branches that are a mix of types of evergreens so I have to wire each bauble to the tree and while that sounds painful, it really is quite simple and at least there is no worry about one falling. I also make sure to put some of the larger baubles and picks further into the inside of the tree, which draws the eye into the branches. Picks are the best time savers and space fillers because you can literally shove them in like you have done with the roses. Your table looks lovely and very warm even before you add flowers. Can't wait to see it finished.

Delightful as always . My brothers birthday is on the 13th December so it was lovely to hear your families tradition of putting the tree up for her birthday. Our family tradition came at the other end of the season, my mothers birthday was the 10th january so the tree and decorations were only taken down on the morning of the 11th.
You said something of great importance while dressing the table, you said "Give yourself permission" We can all become trapped by notions of how something should be or by others traditions or ideas. The world is not perfect, we are not perfect and when we feel pressured it is good to give ourselves permission to just be ourselves.

Each year my brother would get his two children to select a toy to meet Father Christmas…
They would bundle the toy up against the cold with a little cloak and put a small satchel around it which they had made. They would then put their letters for Father Christmas in it and put the toy out on the back doorstep to await his arrival.
I always thought that was very sweet and would make a lovely tradition. 🎄

Everything looks beautiful. How thoughtful you are to have it up for your nieces visit(I hope I remembered that correctly). Back in my day we used the old school tinsel and after us kids would throw it on mom of course would un-clump it,lol. Then on the eve n day-night her sister and kids would come for games and they would bring all their foods and this went on for years as we grew up. Parents are gone and the family homes too but the memories will live on❤.

Thanks again Nicolas for sharing your lovely home with us and your new artificial Christmas tree! Having one is definitely a plus in more ways than one! We finally bought an artificial one after decades of buying real ones and hauling them into and out of the house! Don't miss them especially all the vacuuming up after! I think I still find a pine tree needle every now and then! lol Yes, the RED color is another plus as well! Have you ever noticed in famous films especially ones based on history or romantic epics that the art directors purposefully ADD a touch of red here and there! Sometimes, they use red to great advantage even in modern contemporary films like the famous Academy Award winning French films like "Gigi" and "Amelie" and blockbuster history based movies like "Dr. Zhivago" and "REDS"! Enjoy the holidays ahead~ ♥🎄🎄♥

@@NicolasFairford YW, clever on their part and based on color theory on the part of the art directors, set designers and also the cinematographers! Even Monet did it as well as other painters so I do that as well with some of my paintings! There's a lovely French impressionist painting of a woman sitting in the park surrounded by lush green foliage and other flowers. but the only red in the painting is her parasol which really as you stated, "pops out"! Red is a great accent color if not used as the main color of a room! Cheers~♥

I absolutely loved that tree. Not too fussy, but still colorful and elegant. I just wish I had more patience to do the Christmas decorations. This is why I need tree trimming parties. I practically need an army of people to help me decorate.

I loved everything about this episode. The tree is perfect, you chose wisely. I love your new dinnerware, and the hotel was a perfect ending. I love Edinburgh. It's a magical, sophisticated, fun, welcoming, walkable city, and I'd love to visit again in the future. And surprise - I love haggis. I was told I'd hate it. You chose the perfect background music. Enjoy your holidays. You deserve only the best.

I love your tree and table decor! It gives me such cozy vibes. When I was a little girl, my family and I would decorate our tree together. My favorite Christmas was going to my dad’s job. He worked at a gardening store. One Christmas, he bought us a real tree from his job and they sprayed it white. It was such a beautiful tree. When my husband and I got married, we had our own tradition. We would play Christmas music and bake cookies while decorating our tree. We used our daughter’s picture instead of a star. He said she was our little star and she deserved to be on top. We went all out. Last year, he sadly passed away and decided not to put up Christmas decorations. This year, my daughter is so excited for Christmas. She really wanted to decorate. We continued our little tradition by baking cookies, listening to Christmas music and we made hot chocolate. Sending you so much love and good vibes 💕

Your Christmas tree is absolutely gorgeous! Growing up we always had a live tree. Later in my adult life the idea of artificial tree sounded like a good plan. These last few years I had a “pencil “ tree that was up all year. The hotel was beyond awesome!

It's perfect, Nicolas! My favourite theme, colours, and ambiance. Love, love, love. We have a tradition where we all go together and choose a tree and a renewable tree farm, set out a buffet, and as the children, all received an ornament each year and they were in charge of decorating with their ornaments. When they grew up and moved out on their own they had a beginner set of ornaments they had their whole life. Now we live on a sailboat and I wrap the mast, which runs down through the salon/galley to the keel, and decorate with artificial boughs and add fresh greens that we gather locally and of course our collection of ornaments. It's so pretty and festive. Wishing you all the best. :)

I put up my tree yesterday and am still moving things around on it! I have used tinsel for years, but I liked the way you used ribbon, so I may do that next year to modernize my tree! I also included a few 'pics' of berries this year to fill those pesky empty spaces nicely! Every year, since the birth of my children, I have bought them each a decoration. Every year it has been their job to put their decorations on the tree. Now that I am in my 'empty nest', I found it a little bittersweet to put their decorations up on their behalf, yet it was lovely thinking of them! Christmas is about family! My Birthday is in December, my Mother always waited until after my Birthday to put up the tree, which I think was lovely of her! Happy Christmas All!

I have a Balsam Hill tree, too. I love it! I’ve had a nature tree the past few years. This year, I’m setting up my Christopher Radko tree. I’ve collected his old fashioned ornaments for several years, and I can’t wait to see them again sparkle.

PS Did you know that there is a new Bunny Mellon biography that's been released this past week? It's called "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" by Mac Griswald. Ms Griswald was a classmate/friend of Bunny's daughter Eliza at Foxcroft. She knew Bunny for decades. It's a great book so far.

When I was growing up, my mother got it into her head that from now on, we were going to have a tree that was flocked white, and all the lights and ornaments were to be red. Needless to say, when I was old enough and lived on my own, I had a green tree with multiple colored lights, Victorian style ornaments, and strings of popcorn and cranberries. It was glorious!

Decorating the Christmas tree is also one of my happiest childhood memories. When I was young-about 10 or 11 years old, I was at my piano teacher’s house for my piano lesson and she had her Christmas tree up in the front window without anything on it. While my sister was having her half hour lesson, she let me decorate her tree for her. We all still laugh at the story of my mom pulling into her driveway to pick us up and seeing me hanging ornaments on her Christmas tree!
