This idea is genius and this channel is so much underrated. I hope you will be able to work out the algorithm of UA-cam to become more visible. I just discovered about you through some videos of Alone and had to actively look for your channel to find it. You are an inspiration to me. God bless you 🕊
Great review and helpful tips Dave! I love the tube with bubbler idea. I will have to add those items to my kit. I used my Sawyer mini in a semi-survival situation shortly after I purchased it. It worked very well me. When I bought mine, the employee from the store explained, that the larger Sawyer has a better volume of flow than the mini. I may invest the extra money in one, if I decide to do enough trips, where there may not be clean water available, to justify it. One other disadvantage of the Sawyer filters is, you cannot let them freeze. If you are camping in below freezing temps, you should always keep the filter near your body to keep it from freezing.
Personally I'm trying to learn flint and steel fire starting. I'm cool with the ferro rod, but actual flint and steel fire starting is new to me. Also because I have friends who are looking to take a trip soon, I would like for them to get some solid tips on safe traveling out of the country. Thanks again for what you do!
early june i'll be hiking across Wyoming's Great Divide Basin and water will be a bit difficult at times. I did pick up a mini Sawyer with kit...now i will include a fish bubbler filter and a few feet of tubeing. Thanks for the tip Mac...atb...woods
Been while since we have seen that machete. My guess is that you really enjoyed having it on your hip again. :-) . I've been using the same sawyer mini for a couple years now. Love how it's lightened up the pack. I used iodine treated water to back flush and clean it since it is going in the clean side. I've had no trouble or reactions so far. Good idea adding the longer tube and pre-filter. Where I hike now, sometimes I come across dried up areas that are just puddles and pond scum. Maybe with a longer tube I could get under the scum to the clean stuff with out getting stuck in the mud. Thanks again for sharing your time.
Great tips. That terrain reminded me of my Colorado Rockies. We get those short afternoon rains daily in some area's. I love that fresh ozone smell after a rain. I'm glad your getting your brain charged up down there with your amigo's.
Your system with the bubbler reminds me a lot of a mini version of the Katadyn hiker pro, which is what we use. I really like the tip where you put the tube on a stick, hadn't thought of that before.
Rich FiveFiveSix , I'm late to the party but your idea of a check valve got me thinking. I added a tee, and two check valves. Now the syringe acts like a hand pump! Put a check valve before the tee, attach the syringe to the tee with a short bit of tube, and on the third end of the tee, add another short length of tube with the second check valve which is now the spout. No more stop and go, connect/draw/disconnect/purge/reconnect. All small components, easily packable and carryable. If the valves fail or get too clogged, you can either back flush, or remove them and use the method Dave just showed using just your tubing. 👍🏻👍🏻
Good tip on the tube and stone. I had some issues with my sawyer mini. I colected rain water with my tarp and had a fire going. Disappointing the water tasted smoke from the filter and that not only passed through, but stuck there. So the next water filtered had that nasty smoke flavor. I had the sirenge, but it didn't work for me that time. Just now, I stoped writing and back washed it. Yes, it doesn't taste that anymore, but in that trip it was so nasty that I end up drinking the water straight from the steams. Luckily I had no issues with taht. Next issue: the flow is to slow. So many times, I ended up not drinkig enough water. I did an improvisation with a bottle above and one under tied with paracord. So I could leave it alone. That worket, but still was a lot of work.
Great idea with the fish bubbler, gonna have to add that to my water kit. Note: Sawyer Squeeze filter is slightly larger than the mini and maintains a good flow rate longer.
Brilliant! Adding a neck lanyard to the water bag might make it more user friendly. By the way chemical treatments aren't as effective against cyst borne protozoa like crypto or giardia. Both exist in my area. I use both chemical and filter for that reason. Don't know what exists out there but figured its useful info to put out. Glad you're posting again thanks for sharing.
Colhane that's exactly what I was thinking. that fish bubbler idea is awesome! thank you for the tip! Have you seen my MSR trail shot vid? if not,, it's worth a look. have a beautiful day brotha!
Hi David and thank you for the excellent video. Just a question, if you use the seringe with the tubing/bubbler, it's contaminated... so it SHOULD not be used to backwash the filter (because you would put contaminated water on the wrong side of the filter). Take care and stay safe...
Dave went out and bought the sawyer after watching you video. was debating between the sawyer and the life straw but the sawyer seems to give many more options. Wont a few drops of bleach in water act as a chemical treatment?
On the bleach question, short answer is yes BUT you need to know the concentration of available chlorine in your bleach for the correct dosage and also that there are no other additives to the bleach. In my experience with liquid chlorine bleach I have usually managed to drip it on gear and clothes as well. In Brazil I would buy Clor-In 1 which came in tablet form. In the US I have bought flocculating chlorine tablets that work as advertised but leave the water tasting like a public pool.
Yer return to utube has awesome tips... Mac... You were worth the wait !!! How is the mini compared to the PVC emergency filter pipe u used to make! He he he ! Seriously though , do u think the sawyer squeeze would have kept yer hydration up with its faster flow? Thanks.

Just got a Sawyer Mini & notice 1 problem right away. It is suppose to screw on to water bottles. Well I have already tried 2 difference brands of water bottles & it doesn't fit unfortunately. :)
Excellent tip on the tube + bubbler! Congratz
wow what a great idia
Great technic with the stick and the syringe!
Outstanding, thank you Mr. McIntyre.
Airplanes have toilets Bro.. LOL! Seriously.. smart move not to drink the water! LOVE my Sawyer squeeze.. great video!
Thanks! :) It was why I was laughing as I mentioned it on the video..that would NOT have been good!~
Nice review and glad to see some new video!
Mac, what an excellent "hack" for that system. Thanks! I will definitely try to incorporate that into my kit in the future!

Hope you've had a safe trip, thank you for all the great Facebook and UA-cam content since leaving. God bless
Thanks Will, lmk if there are any lessons in particular you want to see ok?

A plastic tube and bubbler have been standard kit in the Sonoran Desert for years. I have used Sawyer filters and like them very much.

I got mine in the aquarium section of Walmart. Also, they sell check valves that will help with keeping the tube full.
Thanks for the check valve tip, stops that three handed thing.

Hi Colhane. This filter fits on standard PET bottle thread. So You can fill up standard 1,5l or 2l PET bottle, screw the filter on and drink. ATB

Dropping knowledge
Excellent video! I love the Sawyer filter! If the fish bubbler gets clogged can you "backwash" it?
Yes, just force water through the opposite direction.

A small ball-check added to your tubing would help you get full syringes of water after the first suction...
I would like to see a video about your machete
Yep

I put a not about that in the info section. I had meant to mention that in the video.

Thanks for the review. Will the tube be of any benefit here in Michigan or just dry areas/regions?
Finding water isn't much of a problem here in MI. The place is fairly soaked most of the year.

I like using filters because it just tastes better but I always bring some chemical purification tablets cause you never know.
I know right
