  • The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has been providing some amazing film footage of BC's highways from 1966, including the drive from Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) to New Burnaby. Thanks to them for making this footage available for us to enjoy.
I thought it would be fun project to shoot the same route in 2017, and highlight the differences between 'then and now'. So, I created a side by side view showing a comparison of the route, about 51 years later years later.
    Some notes:
    - The 2017 video was shot on November 4, 2017.
    - The 1966 video is unedited, however small sections of the 2017 video have been cut (mostly due to so much traffic slowing down the drive).
    - I did my best to sync the video wherever possible using landmarks and road alignments (bridges, streets, buildings, etc) as freeze frames, allowing for a great visual comparison of the old and new footage. The speed of the video varies throughout, slowing down for our landmarks.
    - If you wish, you can slow down by clicking on the gear shaped icon in the bottom right corner of the video screen, then click “Speed” and choose your desired speed.
    Info and Credits:
1966 Video: Thanks to BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for posting this at: • BC Road Trip Time Mach...
2017 Video: Shot in 1080p 60 FPS High Definition using a dashcam mounted in my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I welcome any feedback or comments you might have.

The two bridges that you go over just before the Lions Gate Bridge were just replaced a few years ago. To bad the film kinda missed the old toll booths at the north end of Lions Gate but it does show to old harbour control station at midspan above the traffic. All ships coming and going were controlled from there via flags and coloured balls

I remember a lot of this. Turning onto the old Georgia Viaduct off Georgia Street there was a 45 degree left angle to get onto the viaduct. It ended at Main street by the substation. Then to turn onto Terminal from Main you'd have to take a right off Main by the cement plant onto a loop to cross Main and get onto terminal, there was no way to turn left directly onto Terminal from Main Street. I also remember Kelly Douglas in Metrotown (used to be a Ford plant) with the huge grass lawn in front of the building.

Great work. The Ministry’s 1966 time machine videos are fascinating but for someone like me born long after, connecting them to a modern dash cam and comparing side by side gives so much context to the changes. Appreciate your time and effort to put this together.

Great video Dave....I can't believe you hit the same red light at Georgia and Howe, 50+ years later. Damn downtown traffic.

At 5:50 you failed to mention that the Expo 86 sky train line was the former Central Park line of the British Columbia Electric Railway interurban.

Interesting, a little slower would be nice. The stop action was a nice touch.
