A Canadian pilot dropped in on my mother. Who was outside hanging her wash to line dry. He fell into her rose garden. It was 1940, peace time for her, war time for him. Was being trained to operate a US Army Air Force bomber when told to jump out. Nor did he ask why. She let him use her telephone, took out his thorn problems, and he was eating hot food when a US Army staff car arrived to collect him. Her daughters all got his signature in what then was called a Hope Book for young ladies. Which I never got to see because it was under old pink lipstick.
