Time to react to 'Frida Ensam', (Frida Alone),1975. Known for the original 'Fernando'. ABBA's english 'Fernando',1976 is technically a cover.

Frida was already an accomplished live singer in her early '20s .She was into jazz bands since aged 13-14..Agnetha was into schlager,Bjorn into a folkband and Benny into pop n rock n roll at the time. The blending of the 4some evolved our ABBA.

    • @danbike9
      @danbike9 4 місяці тому

And we can thank Stig Anderson for securing Frida. Frida was the last one of the entire ABBA team to commit.
Frida was very reluctant to sing pop songs and be part of a pop group. Artistically a comedown. She preferred the more challenging and sophistication of vocal centric genres. But pop of course is more lucrative.
In 1972, Stig/Polar Music signed Frida to a solo contract, after her 1967-72 EMI solo contract was fulfilled.
Frida then agreed to re-join Benny, Bjorn , Agnetha and the ABBA team.

@@danbike9Oh i'm sure Frida didn't regret it,lol.Neither did Stig of course. And I'm so very grateful.I knew she had left the 3some for a while in the very early '70s but fortunately they all coexisted again for good ever after, till the end.
Btw I recall in the early '80s reading in an Abba book that Frida was into other stuff but came to pop music because of Benny and got surprised at the time.As for Stig, yes,he was an exceedingly wise and very clever man.He knew how to organize everything if he believed in someone.

@@alexioverdo5225 Frida avoiding pop for so long is why she has such a refined skill set.
Pop is for the masses. And the masses like a certain amount of sugar poured in their ears. That means watering things down a bit -- just like 'Peter Pan', which was influenced by Benny and helped Frida get on charts. Vocally an artistic comedown for Frida. But she hits the charts.
Take ABBA's 'I Let The Music Speak'. Not a pop song. Not enough sugar. But those with a more analytical mind, absolutely love it. The classical world noticed. A famous opera singer covered the song.
But a song like 'I Let The Music Speak' will never make the pop charts. Why? Not enough sugar poured in the ear to attract the masses. But, I bet very satisfing for Frida and Benny and Bjorn too. They did of course move on to Chess and then their ultimate masterpiece 'Kristina fran Duvemala'.

Great song and great reaction. What a voice! Frida had just won a major Swedish singing competition and a contract with Swedish brand EMI records. She was brought to the studio to sing it live on tv totally unrehearsed but handeled it like a champ. The host questions though, oyy! Frida showed she could be a mother and a singer. One of the first. She took a whole lot of bashing when she let her kids stay with their father while she tried to be a singer in Stockholm (she saw them all the time though) glad times have changed. Take care

Hey Sue .. Seen this video a number of times .. Frida sounds just terrific, as both she and Agnetha always do, regardless of the language they are singing in or the time period in which they did it .. But I always cringe a bit when I see the very personal line of questioning she was subjected to by this compere .. However, as usual, she retains her dignity and charm .. A class act for sure.

There is a slightly longer film about of this performance showing the two pianists having a discussion beforehand. Frida had earlier won the national talent contest and was then whisked across town to appear on this TV show. She had handed the band a small note of the arrangement. What is remarkable about this performance is not just her singing but that it's totally unrehearsed and you can see she's not even familiar with that type of microphone. They're basically all 'winging it'. But though young, she was an experienced live singer with improvisation skills so she and the Jazz combo worked well together.

Frida was the Mariah or Whitney of her day. LOL... No seriously, her voice is so underrated. In my opinion, she was the stronger of the two ABBA leads. Her range, pitch, and projection were off the charts. She could soothe with a purr, roar like a lion or tinkle like a bell. What a voice.

Benny, Bjorn and Michael B. Tretow, ABBA's recording engineer - considered Frida a master vocalist as did as all her peers.

Great reaction, Sue 😙 Honestly, jazz isn't a style of music I like, but I am okay with making an exception with Frida, even though I listen to it infrequently. It took her a long time to establish herself due to the choice of songs she sang. When she met Benny and changed her repertoire, success finally came. But then, the Abba chapter began to take shape...

    It was a day off,
    filled with pleasure.
I walked in the sunshine and sensed its warmth,
    I was happy.
From the sea music was coming
    to every little bay.
    Such a beautiful day,
    a wonderful day off,
I walked on the beach and sensed the sand,
    warm and nice.
    A sailboat
rested on the waves and waited for me.
    I watched every little
    playful, gentle wave
    dancing to the shore
    at the moment we found.
Oh, it was a day off
and all of a sudden I was reminded of
    how you and me once
    sailed away from the world.
It is so beautiful to remember
    our playful passion,
the day at the sea, so lovely.
    I watched every little

Hi Sue! Great to see you react to more of Fridas solo work, and in swedish too. Love it! I really like her solo albums before ABBA and her jazzy style. She does several swedish covers of big english language hits on these that I like, can look some up on my vinyl records later. Björn was in the group Hootenanny Singers, they had lots of hits in Sweden but I can't really give any suggestions of the top of my head, Benny was in the group Hep Stars, not really my style (they sang in english but at that time Swedes were not that good at it, german had been the second language in school for people of those generations) but his later work with BAO (Benny Anderssons Orkester) is great! Agnetha, well, there are a lot of gems there also, I can look at my vinyls there too, if I can find something. Most things are in Swedish, but if that is ok to listen and react to that makes it easier (to give suggestions, maybe not for you and everyone who does not speak it). By the way it is Fridas birthday the 15th of November! 💝 She has such a sunny and warm voice, you almost feel the summer sun she is singing about, even if you don't undestand the words, don't you? She is so lovely. Seemed so bashful and shy when Lennart Hyland spoke to her, it was a big thing to be on his show, like our Ed Sullivan - the king of Swedish TV entertainment of the day. She was and still is so sweet! 🥰 She is takling about her little family, but she met Benny just a couple of years later and her career definitely changed too... Hope she is doing great and enjoys life, and have a wounderful birthday and many more to come!!! 💖🥳 🎂 🎉 💖
You did great by the way with the pronunciation of En ledig dag, it was pretty darn close! Yes, A Day Off is what it means and here is a little hasty translation of the lyrics:
    Verse 1:
    It was a day off
    Filled with pleasure
I walked in the sun, felt the heat
    I was happy
    From the sea came music
    To every little cove
    Verse 2:
    Just this beautiful day
    A lovely, free day
I walked on the beach, felt the sand
    Warm and comfortable
    A boat with sails
    Was waiting for me
    Bridge:
    Playful, easy I saw
    Every little wave
    Dancing towards the beach
    The moment we found
    Verse 3:
Oh, it was a day off
All of a sudden I remembered
    How you and I once
    From the world steered away
    Think how nice to remember
    Our time in love
A day by the sea, so nice
Naturally if you translate kind of word by word it doesn't sound as good as in the original, but at least you can follow along.

Was very relieved that you reacted to this unrehearsed version and not the later album one. That one has too fast a tempo, and is over-produced with none of the charm of this. IMO of course. But yeah, that interviewer crossed way over the line into major jerk territory. "Well Frida, this is your big day, winning the contest, and now you're on national TV. So let's talk about your personal problems with your career, husband, and 2 kids. And speculate as to why you aren't successful"
