Today, we're talking artists' "Good Girl Gone Bad" Singles. I'll talk about lead singles from albums that marked a turning point in each artists' career. Typically this showed a more mature, "bad girl" side to them, as they crossed into adulthood, or simply wanted to distinguish they were no longer a child star. Artists mentioned include Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and (though he's not a girl) Lil Nas X.

LOL not lil nas x a part of the good “girls” 😭😭😭
He was never really a good “girl” imo lol even with old town road
@@tylerhackner9731, he was just… there.

I was gonna say lol
I'm HOLLERING
The fact that Rihanna had 4 #1 songs in the Good Girl Gone Bad Era.
- Umbrella, Take A Bow, Disturbia, Live Your Life.
I truly miss when she was running pop
btw most of the songs on GGGB are scrapped from Blackout or either was made for Blackout first, i like how both of these albums have simillarities, im still dreaming of dont stop the music remix with britney, wouldve been so iconic...
@@ouroboros253The only song I known that was originally for Britney was Umbrella. The rest were speculated by fans but never backed up by a credible source expect for maybe Question Existing.
@@ouroboros253Not to be rude but don’t stop the music is pop perfection. A Britney remix would be unnecessary.
@@fan7708 Jamie Cullum made a version of don't stop the music that i absolutely Love.
I remember when Can't Be Tamed was released during the height of Hannah Montana. It had six-year-old me in a chokehold
SO iconic i love that song
The way you’re always on brand but never post a video that feels repetitive? Iconic.
best compliment ever thank youuu
Rihanna came in hard with her era the number 1s was not to be played with.
Christina’s looks still are trendy to this day with her infectious style.
It’s so crazy to see what was nasty back then vs now like a sexy red would give the 80s-00s a heart attack 💀💀💀
lol ikr just keeps getting nastier and nastier
And it’s gon get even worse like
The fact that Christina was like 21 when she recorded Stripped is so mind blowing to me
How brilliant of you to start with QUEEN Mother Janet Jackson. She created the template for the POP girls. She taught the girls how to break out, how be socially conscious era, how to be introspective era, and how to sensual era. My personal favorite pop girl to do it expertly is Christina Aguilera STRIPPED Era. It really works when the ladies have things to say.
Janet Jackson going from cute to sexy was a move popularized a few years earlier by Olivia Newton-John going from cute 70s songs like "Have You Never Been Mellow" to her sexy 1981 album "Physical".
I know right?! Makes me want to pause this video and go listen to Janet's Control album. Truly groundbreaking!!
@@Gobble_de_Goop Yes! That album still knocks!
I feel like my opinion would be very unpopular, but I feel like these "good girl gone bad" phases are not about REALLY going 'bad' (edgy, provocative, etc), but more about preparing audience for everything that can happen in the future. Almost every mentioned artist had a change of style, lyrics, sound but not so much of attitude. Rihanna in GGGB era was looking darker and edgier and sexier, but more with image than with attitude. She really became 'bad' in Rated R era. This is similar to Britney, bc in Britney era she still had innocent attitude, even though trying to ruin this image, but in the next era with Toxic and MATM she really started behaving mature. I also started remembering Taylor in reputation era, and I still think that it was her 'gggb' era, but bc she's a bit different person and artist (she is less diva and more singer-songwriter), this step wasn't working for her so successful. Maybe I can agree with Control and DW eras, but it also seems that Janet became more provocative and 'bad' in her Janet era, while Ariana really started looking and behaving mature in Sweetener era, but in tun era she became darker and edgier.
This is a great point! I think one thing these was do, even if the artist doesn’t stay “bad” it shows their versatility and allows them to switch things up that way they don’t stay in the same lane too long, possible making it feel even more out of place to fans if they were to go “bad”/ edgy/ risqué later on
@@naomi.cannibal Now I think that it's one of the reasons why Christina's career wasn't so successful after Stripped, bc before Stripped she had quite innocent image (even though lyrics were provocative), but in Stripped era she alienated both critics, fans and media, and when she came back with B2B era everyone had a feeling that Christina had nothing left to surprise the audience
That’s an interesting take, but the GGGB trope is more about maturity (shedding the image of a teen/child star) and taking control of their craft. It’s about waking up to the things they were naive about and rebelling against it
@@yageshabazz3456agreed!
To me, a lot have done it, but Christina set the standard for pop girls now for good and bad . I will credit Donna and especially Janet because they created the concept.
I don’t think so because Christina was always the racy bad girl. That’s what kind of set her apart from Britney which was truly the all American good girl
@@Doyouandshutup not exactly, but the sexy was part of her original concept I suspect it has to do with her being Ecuadorian
@@Slm99 yes exactly, Christina was always outspoken and had a nasty attitude. She didn’t fully go into that until the stripped era though
@@Slm99ayo don't do us Ecuadorians like that.
@@JuanitoEsBonito I meant in a way that the industry sexualized her because of her last name and heritage.
I feel like Janet Jackson's self-titled "Janet." album from 1993 could also be considered a "good girl gone bad" moment as well. It was the first time she started being unapologetically sexy with her music, clothes, videos, etc. I remember her topless Rolling Stone cover causing a lot of controversy at the time.
Jungkook from BTS, is going through this phase now. He’s doing SO many pelvic thrusts and crotch grabs. He’s now taking off his shirt, and singing about sex. He even posted a video in which he takes a shower. Of course, it’s still pretty tame, but definitely a departure from his cutie-pie image. It’s interesting to watch the cycle continue, and to know that male performers go through it too.
omg yes!! i never followed BTS that much (just more partial to ggs) but ive been enjoying his solo stages a lot.
I'm loving it myself

Random fact about Umbrella by Rihanna, when it came out in Ireland a few radio stations refused to play it cause they thought it made it rain every time they did 😭😂
😂😂😂
Sam smith would’ve been a good example to look into too. He went from whiny heartbreak songs to a dark sexual theme with his latest project

Good Girl Gone Bad was what got me into Rihanna at 4-5 years old. I had the whole album on my iPod shuffle and I was bumping anytime anywhere
One thing I’m really surprised, and happy about, is that you didn’t credit the 1993 “Janet.” album as Janet’s “good girl gone bad” era. A lot of her fans consider the “Janet.” album as Janet’s “bad girl” era due to the album’s cover and singles, ESPECIALLY “If”!, while completely skipping over Control!
Me personally, I think that Janet’s big three albums that really transformed her image were Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, and Janet. All of them represented a big, new point or shift in Janet’s life or career and I love how she’s able to reflect that in her music!❤
Rihanna’s transition will always stand out to me. It started with a simple shift in image, more adult themes in her music, quite like everyone else on the roster, but still relatively innocent (light) compared to Rated R. She wasn’t just trying to rebel against expectations of her, or trying to escape an image, she had genuinely lost her innocence in such a deep, and public way. Not just from the assault, but from the scrutiny she had to endure, the lack of privacy she had as she tried to pick up the pieces. You could see it in her music, her style, her music videos. It was much more than just an attempt at a mature image. It was a complete change in her.
Wow this is so well said
Omg i was just listen to the stripped álbum from Christina. I was 18 when the álbum came out and to this day is one of my favorite álbuns of all time. The álbum is more meaningful than some peope thought back then. The voice within, can't hold us down, walk away, fighter, beautiful, underappreciated, keep on singin' my song, impossible (collab with Alicia Keys, who i also Love so much too) and the iconic dirrty. Even the stripped intro has an important message. This álbum really is/was very powerful and i love the courage of Christina for making this álbum and era. I was a fan of her before this álbum but stripped made me love her even more till this day. FIGHTER FOREVER. ♥️
Christina's transition was the most epic and exciting without doubt. The looks, the videos, the songs, the attitude...it was perfect
It was also the most shocking because It was extreme. She literally went from white to black 😂😂😂😂
Can we bring back 2000s nasty, I mean I was there bro it was subtle. Lol a lot of innuendos. A lot of “sexy talk”. But still fairly clean to a certain degree. 2000s nasty was a little peak into a window. Todays nasty, FUCK A WINDOW, THE WHOLE HOUSE IS MISSING.
The can’t be tamed backlash was so funny, because my friends and I loooved that song when we were like 8. It’s such a campy (and honestly pretty kid-friendly) gggb song
Definitely, and the lyrics don't seem that offensive
we need more janet content 😫😭
One of my favorite tropes in pop music
sameee love to see the edgy side
Thank you for celebrating Janet Jackson and her pioneer vibes, wow!
When a pop star "goes bad" their career excelerates big time. They often become more much iconic and rememberable (i.e., Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Xtina, Lil Nas, etc.) Wait until someone like Olivia Rodrigo "goes bad." She will become even bigger.
i think that will be interesting bc looking at olivia i never read her as a good girl tbh with her music initially her public persona was all over the place mainly bc of the constant taylor swift (and to an certain extent lorde) comparisons, it's like she was being a mixture of a broken heartened storyteller and a rebellious voice for Gen Z culture, it's like with guts she's still stuck in between both but not where it's too derivate from taylor and lorde more like on her own
I'd argue this IS olivia rodrigo's bad girl era. She went from Disney kid to pop punk star that parents disapprove up. She's no Miley, but yeah
I know the looks are “Iconic” but my goodness the fashion in the 00’s was so trashy and ugly I’m so sorry they were I was there 😂😂
plsss i was so so ready to be wearing jeans under my dress w my best stilettos 😭
@@naomi.cannibal lmao not the stilettos also you should do tier list ranking for billboard #1 songs of different years
tate mcrae is starting this era right now!
Rihanna's GGGB was amazing. I always have a soft spot for it because it was one of the first pop albums I ever bought. However, her new haircut aside, I would not call Umbrella a "bad girl" song in any way. It's a sweet, very innocent song about friendship. The next single was Shut Up and Drive which was definitely bad girl song
Chloe Bailey with Have Mercy was def a good girl gone bad
It’s so funny that whenever the yt pop girls especially want to go for a “bad girl” direction they bring in hip hop music ascetics and rappers… it’s like as if Black sounds, ascetics, and people are inherently more raunchy and sinister or something. That always annoys me.
Great point. That's what Britney but especially Xtina and Miley did
@@AngeBiampandou you can't come for Britney, she only did some hiphop and r&b influence. It's not like she was acting black like Christina or Miley
Black music artists certainly aren’t helping
@@ottoask9151 Hiphop and R&B are black genres…so she still did it. and what is “acting black”, ??? not all black people act the same, no need to be ignorant

lil nas x in the thumbnail 😭😭😭
Reading the book "Woman in Me" by Britney Spears, now i kinda understood why there are celebrities who experiencing this state. Also, a korean actress Kim Saeron seems kinda went through this state based on the scandal happened to her.
Great video! I think you can totally make a second part. Some other examples missed were Mariah Carey's "Honey" single and the Butterfly album era. Nelly Furtados "Promiscuous" era. Jessica Simpsons Irresistible.
I dono if Jewels "Intuition" counts, but I wanna include it. It was a total revamp of her image but the song's message is of anti-consumerism lol
Yesss I think I will do a pt2 at some point 🫶🏾
do people not like dangerous woman? :o
that's my favorite ariana album! every single song is a BOP
Janet, Britney, Xtina, Rihanna and Miley had the greatest good girls to bad girl transitions of all time, I would want to give lil nas x the honorable mention mainly bc of how groundbreaking it was to see a black gay male pop star being sexually liberated the afromentioned transition are highly influential and legendary where lil nas x is new but it is groundbreaking in itself and I know it’s already getting a new blueprint status so honorable mention to me,
Out of all of them Janet, Rihanna and Xtina deserves the top 3 GOAT status based on the narratives surrounding their transition, how unique and groundbreaking it was, how they used the marketing to help showcase a artistic evolution to their music and how it helped elevate their careers.
Yes the Lil Nas X one was something I never considered so was surprised to see ppl online throw his name in but it makes sense. I feel like w all the artists this is usually a good move to make a distinct rebrand even w the negative press, bc it keeps them from being in the same lane for too long and opens them up to more versatility or at least what they’d been wanting to make all along
@@naomi.cannibalright I also think with the other artists there was more context to their change particularly from a personal perspective and the transition was a marketing tactic to help move into music, where there was context and complexities to the public transition. Not to say with lil nas x it wasn’t bc again he grew up as a southern black American gay boy who was always told he would go to hell if he was gay and so much other things the thing that made his transition fall flat afterwards was when he tried to marketing it in hip hop lens when he’s a pop artist and when his album Montero didn’t live up to the same hype or expectation that was expected to his marketing
omg can't forget Voodoo by D'angelo, erotica by madonna, butterfly by mariah and Janet by Janet !!
Though the following isn't technically about an album or single, Britney's 2007 was def a "good girl gone bad" era.
No hate to any of the artists but I don’t know understand y they felt the need to go extremely sexy to get the point across that they were growing up. Most of these girls were only 18 or 20 & instead of maturing naturally & letting their music & actions reflect that they just wore next to nothing started swearing & twerking to prove a point. Not to say it didn’t work to make people stop & notice that they weren’t kids anymore but people were more focused on their bodies instead of the music & voices which is sad. Personally I would have preferred for them or others to just mature in actions & writing then to just sell their bodies. Again no hate because some of these eras r still on my playlist but it’s just something I see all the time I’d like to see someone do it differently to show that were a woman not a little girl.
i hate the hate that stripped receives from critics it’s genuinely a great album, even if not super duper cohesive
And the Good Girl Gone Bad song of Rihanna is still a bop
Thank you for starting with the blueprint, Janet Jackson. All these new pop girls followed in her footsteps.
it’s crazy that Madonna’s Erotica era wasn’t included. It was so so inspirational and made it possible for the pop girls to go in this direction
It’s not included bc Madonna was never a good girl she was always a bad girl from the jump, her brand from her first 2 albums was being the street smart fashion centric rebellious dance queen then starting with true blue it was evolving into being a alternative, provocative, avant garde queen that made her shock value presentation have more depth, artistic merit and social/political/cultural consciousness. For erotica she transitioned her exploration of sex from shock value to more depth, nuances and introspective that’s a major difference between Madonna and Janet Madonna was always a bad girl from the jump who started rebelling for the stake of it to rebelling to actually cause legit societal, political and cultural norms, where as Janet was a good girl turned bad girl in part due to personal struggles and the evolution to early adulthood and womanhood
Madonna went from stunt kween to horny lol
@@Kevin-rg3yc that make sense
@@Kevin-rg3ycWell said! 👏
Well considering Madge was never a good girl to begin with lol...yeah in this context it doesn't work

“Can’t be tamed” was Miley’s good girl gone bad idc, I remember being obsessed and also like oh shit Miley is bad now.
You mentioning that the Dirrty MV was banned in Thailand is funny cuz there are Thai references like Thai boxing clubs and even the Thai writing on the walls LOL
I predict this in the future for Tyla! Calling it now. 😂 seriously though
Christina did the good girl gone bad BEST when she came out with Dirrty she took over the world it open doors for all the other girls boys and gays today! Christina Stripped album is iconic Christina is an real legend!
Uhh did u miss Honey by Mariah? Butterfly was Mariahs calling the shots and was scrutinized by the media.
I love how Lil Nas X is in this thumbnail lmao 💅🏿
he a baddie too!
You know what would be an interesting topic, artists who are know to have dark and/or rebellious type personas but have grew into a more mature persona and/or grew to be more of a chameleon. I.e. (in my opinion) Aaliyah, Alanis morresett, Pink, Cher, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, and even Tinashe. I know some of these artist still retained the core aspects of their dark and or rebellious auras from when they first debuted as they further transform in their careers.
*Your videos are very fun and interesting to watch!!*
Christina is so amazing
I really became a die hard fan of Rihanna after GGGB, there was something really genuine about it and I know she was right when she said 'once a good girl goes bad... she gone foreverrr' ❤🔥
Yes same here! GGGB did it for me
I love that you did it in chronological order so we can see the progression throughout history of how each good girl took control of their image, might not be the nastiest they get but definitely the start/ shift

Happy birthday 🎁 ♥️
I absolutely live for this pop music trope
When “Can’t Be Tamed” came out the Facebook moms were livid😭😭😭😭😭😭
Then “We Can’t Stop” happened and they exploded😭😭😭😭😭
Please do a ERA review of Stripped 🥺
MONTERO the album had the potential to be an album with many singles and become the first fully fledged era where since the early 2010s where artists pushed like 5 singles, 2 promotional, a deluxe edition with a single from one of those tracks while still on tour
But unfortunately ended after 4 main singles
DEAD RIGHT NOW deserved to be a single
Imagine if SCOOP got a music video with Lil Nas X and Doja during the height of her general public popularity
AM I DREAMING could’ve gotten a video then a remix with Billie Eilish instead of Miley (leaning more into her sound) could’ve made the song a big hit
agreed I'm still surprised to how limited the album was, i wonder what happened he disappeared during the first half of 2022 and spend the latter half being on tour i would've expected him to push out more singles but idk
Bad girl gone good
isnt very familiar to me would be some more chill songs by stronger performers like lady gaga , miley, pink doing more vunerable balads ?

Lil Nas next to ICONS …. I just don’t like dat 😢 but Rihanna and Britney did it the best !!!! Ariana to me was predictable maybe bcus I was a fan of hers b4 her big blow up I kinda knew what she was about so it wasn’t that much of a shocked !!! To me …
Demi Lovato with confident is another “good girl gone bad” era.
Lil Nas X needs to start his next era
R&B is coming back with many of the girlies such as Coco, Victoria, SZA, Summer Walker, Ari Lennox, Chloe x Halle have been reviving it since the late 2010s
But right now I’m terms of Pop that’s dirty and edgy, we have Tate McRae in terms of her sound, she needs a look shift to match it (I’m thinking, leave the hair long and go half blonde, half black)
Lil Nas X might be able to make dirty Pop explode again
Then I need Dua to follow suit, that red hair is missing streaky bangs like Janet’s “Damita Jo” era or the ones on Britney’s book cover or she needs to wear hats more but ones that make her seem edgier
Bad girl gone good - Kesha
Lil nas x💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
As usual, people are underestimating Britney's impact and influence🙁
Her good girl gone bad era starting halfway through her "oops" era wasn't just to get attention and piss people off, she did it as she felt she was transforming into a grown woman.
Her song I'm not a girl not yet a woman proved that she meant business about growing up.
Her proceeding album "in the zone" was where she completely shed her teeny bopper image by having more eclectic and innovative production (such as the iconic toxic) while still having a strong star power.
It's also important to give notice to "blackout", her album proceeding (again) in the zone. If you've done you're research you know that this album is legendary and important for Britney's life at the time it was released.
Bad girl gone good?? Is there an example? I’m interested.
Janet Jackson set the standard! So many pop girlies who came after her have mentioned her as their inspo, rightfully so.
Slave 4 U is still so current sounding in my opinion! Same with the video! Ahhh she’s just my all time favorite!!
Correction: Dangerous Woman is my favourite Ariana album
You should do a part 2, there are several artist who could be added. Like Beyoncé with her self titled album. And you can include several women who tried to do the good girl gone bad thing and it didn’t work or go over well with the fans
Shocks me that I'm a slave for U didnt go number 1
This is gonna be so weird but rihanna was so scary to little me in her gggb era
I saw Miley as nothing but Hannah Montana until Can’t Be Tamed came out
Thought the thumbnail said "GOOD GIRL GONE BRO" because of the font it's written in lol
Hyuna, a fav K-pop artist, is a great example! Her first solo single was very shocking for the time, and she’s gone on to have a really creative and varied output as a solo artist, while also a member of a “girl crush” group, 4Minute. I think career is really interesting look into Korean idol music and her own shift into personally fulfilling, creative work. How looooooong it took her to get there, because she’s 15+ years in the industry and just now getting that kind of control
Thanks for keeping us fed
It's crazy how the people that have Christianity as their religion or even identity are the ones that give the most hate out into the world. Being a Christian is about loving everybody like Jesus said, religion supposed to be about love and acceptance, but the humans are the ones who are making religion bad thing.
why r you talking about religion here?
Def wanna see bad girl gone good
Didnt justin bieber pass troght this phase as else?
Stripped is a masterpiece album ❤️. Thank you for acknowledging Janet and her impact, people seem to leave her out of the conversations nowadays.
Christina Milian went through that phase for her 2004 album "It's About Time".
I wish Christina Milian had more success, she was certainly talented enough and make good music. I'd rather her than a Selena Gomez.
Bad girl gone good is gaga on the jazz era
Personally I feel like the good girl gone bad phase is so over done by every pop girlie its so played out that it almost feels forces and inauthentic
I used to LOVE that Cobra/Leighton Meester song 😍 A bop and a half indeed! 🙌
You're so pretty. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL (written by a white person)
I feel like some other "good girl gone bad" eras are Demi's "Confident" album and Selena's "Revival" I think its when they fully matured artistically and broke away from the child friendly disney images and coincidentally they were both in 2015. Both released very raunchy and sexy songs like "Cool for the Summer" and "Hands to Myself" with music videos to help them break out of the "good girl" image. Honesty one of my favorite albums from both of them.
That’s weird, how ppl were questioning the sequence of Christina’s singles being released. ‘Drrty’ seems like far more of a LEAD single choice for an album, just as a song. It’s energized, raw, fun, sexy. A definite party song. And even if it underperformed, I never noticed. I heard it a lot on the radio and just everywhere back in the day. People would release ballads & slow jams as singles all the time before 2000… but even then, by the early 2000’s, I think releasing an empowering ballad as the lead single was a gamble.. A “decision”, lol. Although ‘Beautiful’ did perform better & people connect w the song, I don’t feel ballads necessarily hype-up album releases.
Kinda like Jessica Simpson’s debut single, ’I Wanna Love You Forever’; it’s a good song but a bit intense vocally and thematically for a debut. And maybe it wasn’t her biggest hit, either… her follow-up ‘I Think I’m in Love With You’ is fun tho, & might’ve altered her career trajectory had that been her first single. But I digress. Gotta get people hyped before an album drops!!
Xtina is the blueprint
For what? Genuine question
Please not lil nas X in the thumbnail 😭😭😭
In other words, when it comes to pop girls, growing up = being overly sexual. I'd say some of them did it better than others. Britney was effortlessly sexy, while Christina was trying way too hard.
Why lil nas x is here 😭💀 he's just a girlypop not a girl
Miley really normalised girls being sexy & ‘bad’… like she really took all the slVt shaming & flack from the media & the PTA moms… like notice how whenever a woman starts wearing lingerie or showing more skin nobody really cares anymore?
People do care, especially the men who think women are b*tches for wearing anything they see as "sexy". Ladies are not free from the public's judgement.
nothing is wrong with the "good girl gone bad" image as long as it's not forced
Omg i Love this vídeo, Naomi you're the best.👑💜

Omg, a GGGB video from Naomi is a need now. I feel like that album has so much to it. Or maybe I'm just a Rihanna stan. Lol
