Shows how good my memory is(n't)!
Apparently I just didn't reconstruct these minifigures correctly for this video, haha. The calvary colonel is correct, but the two subordinates should be wearing blue pants, not black, and should also have matching white gloves. Whoops!
I remember we used to swap these parts around quite a lot as kids - what we see in the video here is probably fairly accurate to how we would change our figures up. Fort Legoredo was the only other Western set we had growing up, but boy, what a set that one was! I was able to reconstruct a section of it for this video, but bringing the other three sides back to life will take time. Maybe one day we'll visit the whole fort in full. 😊

Just a bit of nitpick, it's cavalry not calvary unless you are talking about
      1. A life-size representation of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on a piece of raised ground.
      2. A series of representations of Christ’s Passion in a church.
      Or 3. A strenuous experience.

Love sets like these. A great selection of figures, fun and useful accessories, no nonsense. The earliest set I remember receiving would be 4098 High Flyers, a small Creator Designer set from 2003 with no less than 34 different models to make out of its mere 197 pieces! Starting out with such a set probably helped make me unafraid to take a build apart and try something new. Simple pieces, a consistent color scheme and theme - it gave you the creative push you needed to get started, and then left the rest up to you.

With sets nowadays the real child creativity is missing, dont get me wrong the sets are designed really good but its more leaning toward playmobile where youre supposed to leave the sets intact.

I would argue. In my opinion, Lego currently offers very interesting sets (the entire Creator series - I missed something like this in the times of my Lego-childhood, i.e. around 1997-2000) and avoids some strategic mistakes from those times (then it made series that disappeared after a few months, they were rarely interconnected and suffered from a general lack of buildings). It's hard for me to say whether Ninjago or Pirates from 1992-1996 is better, but it's better now than in what is called the time of crisis.

    • @5days5hearts25
      @5days5hearts25 Рік тому +4

@natankotowicz7170 I'd say that it isn't a lack of interesting sets or themes that is an issue for LEGO or has ever been. For me, at least, there is an element to these sets in the themes themselves that you definitely won't see now. Frontier folk, antiquated military themes. It's stuff that's pretty taboo now for LEGO.

I seem to remember my first ever Lego set being 5928 Bi-Wing Baron from the Lego Adventurers Egypt theme! I loved the special pieces like the flames, rifles, binoculars, and the map, and I loved the way the propeller had engine detail built behind it! And the Baron himself was a very delightfully evil looking figure. The man hand a hook hand, epaulettes, and a monocle, how could you not love it such an over-the top design?

My first Lego set was Star Wars 6212: X-Wing Fighter. It included the X-Wing build along with Luke, Leia, Chewbacca and Han. It was a great first set and the memories of building it with my family will always stick with me. I’ve also found out after many many years that the Princess Leia mini-figure, which I still have to this day, has a rare defect which makes hair piece smooth. It’s a super rare occurrence and what luck that something like that is in the first Lego set I’ve ever owned!

  • @headcrabking9054

I'd imagine that the old sets were meant to simultaneously "army build" and also intend to be a single purchase item. Both the wild west and deep space aren't exactly overpopulated, but the larger sets often feel a little empty by themselves. These sets provide a nice middle ground between having too many people and too little, and also have the added bonus of being a nice introductory set for those with a smaller budget.
PS. I got into the Lego hobby at such an early age that I don't even remember what my first set was! Though I'd imagine it was probably a Bionicle set based on my early interest in the theme. One thing I definitely remember was the fantasy Ork Castle and the old Hagrid's Hut with the spider made using katanas! My parents were able to buy these sets at a deep, deep, discount, and I was incredibly ungrateful to receive them. I've learned my lesson now, but man, it still stings every time I think about that!

Slugger thought he could casually slip that Rush reference by, but I knew right away! Great stuff! My first lego set was 7942 Off-Road Fire Rescue (sorry if I just made anyone feel old), and I still have it to this day. I get all the nostalgia from the mid-late 2000s era of LEGO, with both the licensed and the now rare unlicensed themes. I wish we got more themes like Space Police, Power Miners, Exo-Force, Agents, and Atlantis today...

I'm not totally sure it was my first, but the LEGO Duplo Castle sets started it all. Looking back, me and my brother almost had all of them, and the greatest memory is when we noticed the huge castle combined build on one of the instructions. We figured out that it was made from all the sets we already had, and we were quite surprised to not find any instructions for it. With the help of my father we managed to assemble it from the single low quality image, and played with it for months. After that we started building our own castles from all the pieces, it was a really great way to teach us, that we can use the legos to make anything, instead of limiting ourselves to the original sets.

My very first introduction to the world of Lego was the M-Tron Pulsar Charger (6811). I can't remember who gifted it to me, but I distinctly remember LOVING the idea of building the toy before playing with it.
As a kid I loved taking toys apart and seeing how they worked, and then putting them back together... sometimes being unable to get it back 100% correct. Lego showed me that I could take that interest and add in my own creativity to make whatever I wanted.
That magic that Lego made me feel as a kid all comes flooding back seeing your passion, Slug man! Thank you for all your amazing content, it brings so many people unmeasurable joy.

I love hearing stories of others' first LEGO sets. It speaks to how brilliant a product is if you can actually remember the very first time you bought or received it! My very VERY first set was 2437- a DUPLO canister from 1998 shaped as a sheriff but the real turning point was a visit to a Woolworths store in the UK in 2001. A buy one, get one free offer prompted my parents to ask me if I'd like to try playing with some LEGO instead of toy trains for a change. They were four Adventurers Dino Island sets that could be ingeniously combined to create a larger aeroplane for the Minifigures to sit in. It was love at first sight and a 23-year (and counting) headache for my parents from there...!

My memories are a bit misty but when I was two years old my first lego set was either captain redbeard’s pirate ship (7075) or nuurakh (8614)
Two very different sets that will forever hold a special place in my heart. I remember that It was my dad who originally built them for me bc I was too young. Though, eventually I learned (through both reverse engineering and the instructions) how to build the ship all by myself which impressed my parents a lot. Probably one of my proudest moments ever in my life. On the other hand, nuurakh was a set that was a gift from my sister and I blame her solely for my bionicle obsession that runs strong even today.

I can't say for sure if it was my very first Lego set, but I do remember playing with set 4011 all the time. It's the cabin cruiser ship from the old Lego town theme. I actually still have the hull, though it has yellowed over the years. I remember playing with it a lot as a kid because you could actually have it float in a bathtub or a sink and I always liked watching it float about. It's probably a good reason why I still like aquatic theme LEGO sets something about those early years of aquanauts and even hydronauts just sparks something in my imagination.

I actually had many "first sets" since I was lucky enough to inherit the collection that my mom had amassed as a kid. It was mainly 70s and 80s town with a few odd castle and space sets here and there, including a (sadly incomplete) Yellow Castle. Otherwise my actual first new set would be 7236 Police Car with the Black/Green stickers. At this point the black police stickers were being phased out and replaced by the blue ones, and I always wanted the new flashy blue version of the set as kid, especially because my best friend had it. But now I actually prefer the black stickers since it means my first set sticks out among the otherwise uniform blue police cruisers.

I had Duplo for a very short time before it, but my very first conventional LEGO set was the 4002 Riptide Racer. It was that set specifically that hooked me onto it - I wasn't really that into Duplo as a young kid as you really couldn't build that much, but the Riptide Racer showed me how deep the rabbit hole was once you got into System. And that wasn't really that complex of a model, but I'm pretty sure that the fact that it was a functional toy boat and actually had detail to it was what did it.

My first set was "4708 Hogwarts Express" that my parents bought on a whim while we were about in a city. There was this toy store that had a Harry Potter sale (or it was even a full-on Harry Potter store), and my mom and brother went inside to get some stuff while I waited outside with my dad. I don't even think I asked for anything, but she got me the train anyway! I was blown away and I still have it to this day (or rather, the few pieces that survived the years). And this was right before Christmas, yet I still got to keep it right away!
My second set I believe was the one you VICIOUSLY tore apart in a previous video, "2585 Track Buggy with Station Master and Cool Kid"! I loved that one so much as well (I'm into trains, can you tell?), but unfortunately it was lost over time. However, thanks to Bricklink, I bought a completely new one a couple years back, and I still have it too!

My first Lego was a box of 1980s Space sets handed down to me from my dad’s childhood collection. That was later followed by a box of his old 80s Technic sets, and a box of castle sets, though I wasn’t allowed to mix the castle sets with the others for some reason.
The first new set I remember receiving was Brick Street Customs, a Lego Racers set with several little cars and a tuning garage with two launchers built in. As soon as I could figure out how to make a chassis, I was obsessed with Lego. Despite not living through the 80s, I inherited my dad’s 80s Lego nostalgia since his Lego became my first Lego.
My best friend at the time had mostly 90s Lego acquired from yard sales, and he had vast quantities of it, so I also have 90s Lego nostalgia from that. Good times.

So "First Lego set" is a question made slightly complicated (in a good way) by my older brother. His Legos were the first I built and played with, probably at the age of 4, alongside him and/or our mom.
The first Lego set I remember playing with and building was probably Majisto's Magical Workshop (6048) and it is still synonymous with the wonder and magic of Lego as I have this sense of imagining all the nooks and crannies of the wizard's workshop implied by the bricks and the possibility of the world it was part of.
The first Lego set I remember getting as my very own was 6470, Mini Dump Truck. I can still recall walking down the aisles of a Toys R Us in Las Vegas, most likely in the last couple months before my family moved to California.
Sure the Mini Dump Truck represents the on-its-face answer to the video's question, but it doesn't have the sort of impact that we often want our firsts to have. I had to get a look at the minifig operating the dump truck and his five o'clock shadow to be sure I was remembering the right thing, but my guy Majisto? Sometimes that little wizard and his magical workshop just pop into my head unbidden or with pretty limited context and it brings a smile to my face! I'll think about the hinged opening and the sloped roof and the absolutely cool green dragon kite shield of the Dragon Masters and it coalesces into something essentially Lego to me. It's the spark that kindled a lifelong source of a variety of joys and that's a special thing.
A couple honorable mentions go to the Granite Grinder (4940) -a welcome to Fresno gift from my paternal grandma which was briefly the sole occupant of my closest in our new house- and the original Slave I (7144) -a gift from my brother for my fifth birthday that was something of a gateway into Star Wars for me.

The lego Star Wars viewing from like 2012/2013 was my first set. I already liked lego, i had a bin of random parts from my sister, and I liked star wars, but this set made me love the 2 of them. The set is sadly disassembled with its parts scattered, but I have tried fixing it.

My first experience with Lego wasn't a set, but a dozen or so bricks at a relative's new house. I imagine I was given them while my parents helped unpack a moving van. The only parts are the green 4 by ten-or-so brick and a pair of those black brick wheel assemblies with the red wheels and metal axles.
I remember the first Lego set I acquired for myself was the 6835 Saucer Scout (Spyrius). I saw it in the choose-your-own-prize pile in music class and was devastated that I wasn't anywhere near the first person to get a chance to answer questions. However, time went on and no one picked it, so I got to take home a super cool Lego set! (I think that would be the only Spyrius set I would ever get new/complete, too.)

Well put together Slugger! It's always fun to look back at those first bricks in your life, and seeing those from others even more so. Thousands of sets all accomplish the same thing :)
My first was 2009 Echo Base. Looking back at it and many other sets I collected as a kid, they mostly stood on display or stayed as is, mostly because I considered them models. I regret missing the fun of playing out stories and building other things as a kid, which I blame on licensed themes establishing "correct" narratives and looks

I remember when I got 7476, I thought to myself: "I think this is too hard for someone my age to build" though I eventually figured it out lol. But I absolutely loved 6205, and getting that is one of the reasons that that ship is one of my favorite star wars vehicles. I used to pull the side sections off and have the minifig ride on them like they were a separate detachable ship. Fun times!

My Grandmother was the main funder of my LEGO obsession as a young lad. I don't remember what my first set was, but I have fond early memories of Adventure set 5920: Island Racer. I was enamored with the textures of the tires. 5935: Island Hopper and 5934: Dino Explorer were my two other favorites at the time. My grandpa even had to glue parts of the Island Hopper together because I kept breaking them apart by being too rough 😭. I do have a specific memory of my 9th birthday when I unboxed 7261 Clone Turbo Tank. I was elated literally jumping for joy haha what a great set, even thought Mace Windu had his light-saber attached to his arm. I haven't bought or put together a lego set in probably about a decade, but your channel has been a conduit in which all these wonderful memories have come flowing back to me and reignited my love for LEGO. I'm not exactly sure which set it exactly was that was my first, but I do remember that, when I was very young, my dad surprised me on my birthday with an (for me, at that time) enormous present: a big Fabuland set. That was so awesome. I must have been 3 or 4. I don't remember my age, but do remember this moment.
Another big moment for me: I was saving for set 6085 (Black Monarch's Castle). It was 80 guilders (Dutch currency at that time). I was saving for many months, which was quite a feat for 6-year old me. But when I had 60 guilders, I couldn't hold it any longer: that was enough to buy 6074, the less big Black Falcon's Fortress. But my dad, who knew I was actually saving for the Black Monarch's castle, then gifted me the 20 guilders I needed to buy the Black Monarch's castle. I had already shown that I was able to save money, and I really really wanted a castle, and was 6 so impatient. That moment has also always stayed with me. And you know what? I still love castles, not only in the form of Lego, but also in real life.

Just proves that I am indeed older than R.R. Slugger. My first LEGO memory is that my parents installed a gate in my big brothers room door because I used to run in there and "destroy" his LEGO builds, so I got to sit in front of this red metal gate and build my DUPLO in the hallway and watch my brother build his LEGO in his room. First set I remember getting was LEGO Space Supply Station Set 6930 from 1983 but I got it for Christmas in 1985 from my godfather when I was 4 years old. Pretty sure there were other sets before that I just don't remember, plus I inherited a lot from my brother who is 7.5 years older. I just used a cavalry figure to MOC a G.I. Most sets I got was from my parents but sometimes I got sets from my dad's boss who was a Millionaire who's from Iran if I remember correctly, He owned a Carpet Shop. (Which is where my father worked at)

I don't actually remember what my first LEGO set was. LEGO has been a part of my life for literally as long as I can remember. Most likely, my first exposure to it would've been through my dad's LEGO collection, which consisted mostly of the first year of Classic Space sets, as well as 6951 Warp Wing Fighter from the UFO theme (which released the year I was born!) and 6251 Sea Mates, which was the minifigure pack for the Pirates theme.
Some of my earliest memories of LEGO sets that entered my household _after_ I was born are of Jack Stone, Orient Expedition, and Bionicle, as well as the DUPLO castle theme, which I still have fond memories of, it being the first LEGO theme I could build with my brother, who at the time was too young for standard LEGO. Very recently, I looked up the old DUPLO castle theme and was very surprised to see how few sets there were. My brother and I must've built so many different MOCs - a new one every day, for a time! - and DUPLO is simple enough that a MOC made by a couple of kids can fit in alongside official sets, so my memory is of there being hundreds of different castles, forts, and towers, rather than the mere three or four sets we actually had!

As far as I know I never had Duplo and just went right into Lego.
