    This is one of Leary's most profound treatises. I like it. It presupposes the post industrial society we now live in, the information age, and the "pendulums" that have emanated in society that attempt to target and manipulate individuals into varying group thought energy systems. Our natural state is one that is apart from politics, religion or material pursuits. Breaking free from this matrix of illusion we live in is key. Start by questioning everything. The spirit of inquiry is the best spirit to achieve knowledge.

    Thank you. I got to see and hear him in person. LSD was a white tablet marked with the Sandoz logo. The trips were led thru the Tibetan Book of the Dead in the 60's and I am so grateful for those times and incredible minds.

    Wow! That last bit was so prophetic. Especially now, with "the great resignation" occurring, I feel like people ARE finally starting to think for themselves and learning how to make a living without bowing to unsubstantiated authority.

    In a time when there are so many platforms that spew information that seldom gets challenged and is just believed as fact based on the narrative and its word salad to deliver what sounds factual but can be further from. Always think for yourself and question authority ✌🏽❤️

      javier lobos Leary was way out there at times. But, if you could get on his level, he was a brilliant philosopher. I think he was as important to the 60's counter culture as anyone else like Kesey, Karoack, Ginsberg, etc. Anyway, have a grateful day

    What's the difference between being emphatically told that you gotta think for yourself and that you gotta think anything specific? Neither are useful in all situations unless a specific thinker is ever only going to be in the type of situation where no experience is required or some experience is required.
    Thinking for yourself takes experience.
    So did inventing the ways that people have already thought.
    How did they go from not thinking at all, to having basic concepts? How did they go from that to language? How did religion improve the thing before it? At what point in the development of an economy (at whatever scale, including personal) does it actually become worthwhile to invest resources into trying to invent significantly new and different ways of thinking and doing things? What's the best way to think about old things? Does the way that old things are considered change during that process? Is it better to start from nothing and learn according to the things you need as you go? Or is it better to identify an ideal future and learn the best things to work towards it?
    P.S. How does the war against unpopular religions in the developed world improve things now?

      Philip Bonnici - thanks for your post which I enjoyed and agreed with. Along those lines I believe people like Leary didn't want anyone to actually do any serious thinking. They wanted us to do what they told us. What he really advocated and was really selling was "keep busy with drugs, sex, and rock and roll while my other colleagues steal your birthright while you're not looking". That was how he lived and was the life he advocated for anyone who would follow him. No real examination of important things, but in actuality, a psychedelic fueled life of hedonism and narcissism.

    "Think for yourself...And question authority". Do you think maybe there was a planned agenda for these words? Here's what I think it boiled down to when these words were finally absorbed in the popular mind:. "Defy all traditional authority and any institution or person who has any power over you". So we end up with a society without norms or a "head", which essentially cripples that society into one that cannot function. That, I think, was the goal of the think tank fostered "revolt" of the 60's. It worked and is still playing out in the way that 'they' desired. "Pssst! Look over here while we send all your jobs to China and elsewhere. Keep busy with the "revolt" we managed for you so we can further debase you, your family, and your country..."

      Steve, your analysis frightens most people; BUT you are right!

    • @Unsubscribedd
      @Unsubscribedd 3 роки тому

      This is the first spot on analysis that I've read of this "60's revolt". I've thought for a long time that it didn't seem to make a lot of sense to try to dismantle academia and society as a whole. For example.... If you want to have a working concert venue, it's a requirement that some people are there to work the ticket booths and parking lot and food stands, so that EVERYONE can enjoy the event and make room for more opportunities to have MORE CONCERTS. I feel that's a reasonable comparison.
      We could have the kind of economic success in the US that China has experienced since the 60's. We now have an unparalelled homeless problem, where as China has entire cities that are built and standing ready to have people move in. Here in the US, we have homeless exploding out from under every bridge because those in power don't want to see our real estate market drop in value if we were to give these people a place to sleep other than the gutter. Who wants to live in a society where you feel that any of your friends who get bogged down with medical bills or other predatory practices might end up being homeless due to the greed of the ruling class?

    Don't put a question mark where God put a period.

    • @zaksmith5921
      @zaksmith5921 7 років тому +9

      Always put a question mark where anyone puts a period, that is how you learn and grow and become an individual. God is not real, get over it. Religion is simply a comfort zone for cowards such as yourself to spend your whole life in some reality religion created for you. Wake up, and start asking questions for yourself, rather than absorbing and reflecting what everyone else told you. Religion is a creation, developed by frightened individuals who couldn't handle the fact that they simply didn't know what or who the hell they were, or where they came from.
