I visited in 1987. I was a guest at a drama festival in Kreuzberg. President Reagan did his famous 'Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall.' I found a copy of the speech near the spot in the dirt. I still have it.
This is gut! My husband and I shared this with my 10 year son who is named after his 2x great grandfather whose printing press and offices were taken over by the Nazis (printed propaganda). Bruno and his wife Alice have the bronze memorial bricks where they were picked up from their home and killed in Auschwitz. My husband's opa (their son) was able to escape to Palestine, then Queens NY. He returned in 1989 and grabbed a piece of the wall.
Hey Tom! Once again, great job. It's amazing how many facts your brain can store haha. Honestly, it's quite impressive how educated you are. Berlin is a huge city and all the neighbourhoods have a very different atmosphere and style, so it's pretty cool that you gave us some impressions from different parts of the city. Good job! I'm really impressed with this video, especially considering that you are a New Yorker and not a Berliner. Keep it up! :)
Tom you are an insanely informative and interesting guide. Whether in nyc or Tampa or Berlin. Awesome knowledge, funny and entertaining. Continued good luck.
I have been looking forward to seeing your footage of Berlin ever since you went there last year. I loved it - brought back memories of visiting Berlin a long time ago.
Ok. This guy is very interesting. He has a nice flow between historical events and how that shaped and changed Berlin and also the visual stunning scenery to enhance the experience. I like his camera angles too. I feel like i'm walking beside him. Thanks very much!
Absolutely buzzing to find this. I’ve been watching all Tom’s NYC vids because we’re visiting again next year, but we’re off to Berlin on Tuesday so, cheers Tom 👍
Hi Tom: Really great Berlin walk video. I love Berlin and have been there twice - once before the wall came down and once after. It is a spectacular city - especially for the arts and its history. The first time I was there we drove from West Germany. My friends were living in Kreuzberg and we arrived very late. When I woke up the next morning and looked out of the bedroom window the wall was right there in the garden. Needless to say I was somewhat astonished. I went back many years later for a month and had a wonderful time roaming around, meeting people etc. , seeing pubs and clubs, museums just everything. I hope youhad enough time on your trip to do the same - it is an unforgettable city. D
Is Lucie from Hamburg? I was 11 when the wall came down and distinctly remember my 6th grade teacher trying to impress upon us just how significant a historic event it was. Obviously as an adult and someone who loves history now I can appreciate the magnitude of these things, but back then the nightly news was just boring crap my dad watched while I impatiently waited for Alf to start. I love Germany so much. I've been there a few times but never made it to Berlin. We were always in the southern part of the country, in and around Munich, and all throughout Austria. Another great adventure, Tom! (It's crazy how much your hair grew on the flight from Berlin back to JFK.)
Napoleon at 5’5” was just an inch or so below the period’s average adult male height. British cartoonist James Gillray (1756-1815). caricatural depictions of the French general were so popular and influential that at the end of his life Napoleon said that Gillray “did more than all the armies of Europe to bring me down.”
Fun stuff! I just got back from Berlin and it was cool to see you walking through so many of the spots I got to experience. Would have been awesome to run into you while out there!
I’m halfway through, and loving it, Tom. Giving a SICK PLUG for your video on Ridgewood, Queens. So many German Immigration stories in Ridgewood//Glendale/Middle Village. I’m sure you’ve been to Zum Stammtisch (sp?), but I’m just scratching the surface. I love your work so much; we both wish I was wealthy!!
Tom you are in Europe. No impossible in Berlin .That near Poland.Maybe after travel on Poland.😃History Warsaw. Capitol.Fantastic travel and fun on Europe.👋
My father had armyduty when he was 20, and was there when the wall was build, Dutch soldiers had to help the western army. I don't know what he had to do, but he was pretty shocked when the wall was build in that speed.
The Hasir restaurant allegedly invented the German Döner (Kebab) that today is the most popular fast food in Germany. Fun fact, there're more Döners sold every year in Germany than all hamburgers from all McDonalds and Burger Kings in Germany combined.
I heard a guard on the east side accidentally let ppl cross earlier than what his orders were, talk abt accidentally being in history, like the Soviet who saved us from WW3. Imagine 3 world wars in the same century. It’s still mind blowing we have 2
Thank you for this tour Tom, highlighting where the books were burned and about Kristallnacht. People think it did not happen. One day I would like to visit Germany. Thank you!
In 1962 we were stationed in Paris with SHAPE (Strategic Headquarters of the Allied Powers of Europe) Headquarters in support of NATO. My mom was in charge of AYA (American Youth Activities). They took a tour of Berlin. The girls distracted American soldier's attention and the boys chiseled out some bricks out of the wall. She got fired. We had to leave Paris. And I think that event accelerated some of the strangenesses of my life. There had already been odd things going on. Just added to the potpourri. It's been weird. Still going on.
I have only ONE tooth left. Had to pull the last one out myself. They knocked out 6 of them. Allowed me to rot out all the others AND pay for ALL the extractions. My name isn't Caesar nor Wilhelm. I just "made my bed".

He’s obviously the most vile human in modern history but I saw a History Channel vid on what his vision for Berlin would’ve looked like, seems kinda cool 😳
Hey there, just came across this channel by chance and I must say: very well done this one, but a bit hasty. Nonetheless you'd done a lot of research to come up with this and I second the guy in the comedy club asking: who cares? Probably not your fellow Americans who do not care enough for their own country, let's wait for November, if you're getting my drift.I for one will care for the New York Vids I found here and my compliments to Lucie. Hi from Berlin, Germany
true. but this also shows how tall Karl der Grosse (8th century) was with 1.84m (=Karl/Carl the Great or Latin: Karolus/Carolus Magnus ('Charlemagne' = wrong/ahistorical!) ...
Hallo Tom. Danke für dein Berlin Video. If you are still in Germany and interested in more facts about the country in general or specific things like the Bauhaus Architecture, get in touch. Would be happy to assist you, big fan... c u. Tschüss!
I’m watching this on Sunday, June 23, 2024… are you still in Berlin??? I’m planning on a visit to Berlin this November, for a week. Never been would love a personal guide……. Let me know. Or if you know someone trustworthy..

I've been waiting for this Berlin video and it did not disappoint. 35 minutes of interesting stuff. Bravo.

I was there in 83. McNair Barracks.

Ok. This guy is very interesting. He has a nice flow between historical events and how that shaped and changed Berlin and also the visual stunning scenery to enhance the experience. I like his camera angles too. I feel like i'm walking beside him. Thanks very much!
I was in Berlin with the U.S. Army (A CO, 2nd BN, 6th INF.) 1979-1980 it was a much different place then.
Thanks for your service@gloriatg100

Hi Tom! This is GREAT. I loved your NYC vids, and I'm stoked you're giving Berlin the same treatment. Thanks, mate!!😉
This is such great video about Berlin. Great insights and lots and lots of information about special parts of the city.

I don't believe you
or do you mean only McDonald's and Burger King in Germany?
@@BearbaitsibeirainRd I found that hard to believe too, as the population of US is at least 3 times that of Germany.
@@BearbaitsibeirainRd Yes, only in Germany combined. Just updated. Thanks
.... und es ist immer noch sehr gut. Grüße aus Berlin -Gropiusstadt.

The Fernsehturm tower was nicknamed the Pope's Revenge, because it shines a cross to the east depending on how the sun hits it.
