  • Duane Stewart-Grant, who is from X̌àʼislakʼala (Haisla) and nuučaan̓uł (Nuu-chah-nulth) First Nations in Canada explores his identity as someone who is “Two Spirited” - a queer, indigenous identity. He talks about how before the colonial era, First Nations people revered the “Two Spirit” identity, as they were viewed as embodying both the female and male spirits.
    In Regalia: Pride in Two Spirits Duane also shares the importance of reclaiming his culture, in the context of the Canadian Residential School System. Duane shares how in his community, much of their culture and language was lost because during the Residential School era, Indigenous language and culture was made illegal. Learning language and culture for him now, has been pivotal in his own identity as a queer First Nations person.
    Duane is now an apprentice with Mike Dangeli, a renown Nisg̱a’a (Nisga’a) artist in Vancouver. Regalia: Pride in Two Spirits captures Mike mentoring Duane in traditional carving practices, as well as a dance performance at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre
    The film revolves around Duane’s ‘Regalia’ that he wears for ceremony and dance, and how his pride in his queer identity and his culture is embodied in his Regalia.

    Of all the aspects of Indigenous North American culture being revived 4 centuries after European colonization began, the most important is the rediscovery of the significance of the Two-Spirit community. For the sake of the future of the First Nations, these divinely touched individuals MUST be returned without delay to their rightful place as healers, medicine people and wise counselors!!

    Over 150 Indigenous First Nations have a shared history of who we now remember as Two-Spirit people. Each of these First Nations have their own language and distinct traditions for their Two-Spirit relatives.
    Many have a third gender in their societies such as the Nde'Isdzan in N'dee (Apache), *Sipiniq* in Inuktitut (Inuit), *Onón:wat* in Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk, Haudenosaunee), *Tida Wena* in Warao, *Boté* in Apsáalooke (Crow), and *Quariwarmi* in Quechua (Inca).
    All the while, several First Nations explicitly have four designations of gender too such as the Méxica empire's *Patlache and Cuiloni* ; Diné nation's Asdzáá, Hastíín, *Nádleehé, and Dilbaa*; Aha Makhav (Mojave) nation's *Alyha and Hwame* ; and the Ashiwi (Zuni) nation's *Katotse and Lhamana.*
    Only Indigenous people have the birth to be Two-Spirit. These are their cultures. Many other Non-Indigenous and Non-Western cultures have their own history and traditions regarding gender and sexual diversity.

    It's interesting that Two-Spirited people have to identify as gay to have a group to be a part of. Two-Spirit (Berdash) tradition is hundreds of years older. It has nothing to do with the world's contemporary gay life style. Yet, its somebody to have a safe haven with. Maybe, in time, Two-Spirited people will have a place of their own and be recognized among their own people again and be honored and respected for what and who they really are...special people by the Creator to do a ministry among their people.

      Amen. The politicized nature of the LGBTalphabet-soup movement contains the same goals of any political entity, which is to divide and conquer. That includes devouring other spirits in order to gain the power to do so. Many Christians believe it is part of the Beast, and I myself believe that, but further believe that modern conceptions of 'gender norms' are too. They are profuse with the mind control of marketing and consumerism, extending to corruption in everything from dating to family courts. Both "sides" controlled by the same Beast! It is set up to render people confused and fearful.
      These jerks stole the rainbow! Look at how much money is made off of hormones and surgeries! Now those beautiful sky arches appearing in art have been tainted with a differing meaning. And then you have a lot of genuine people who are looking for answers in their identity finding themselves there. If we are not careful we can lose sight of the actual, natural meaning of the rainbow and be unknowingly following the goals of another.
      The solution is to see the rainbow for what it actually is. Take it back! Lol.

    Super interesting!! Can a person be two-spirit and be straight?

    • @lenz40
      @lenz40 5 років тому +7

      f quint no, if your straight your not 2 spirit, 2 spirit is a modern umbrella term for indigenous people who are gay,lesbian,bisexual and transgender, however identifying as one of those doesn’t always mean your two spirited, the indigenous teachings around being two spirited is more of a spiritual existence, it’s how you live with both masculine and feminine spirits more than just your lifestyle or sexual orientation, you would need to be able to spiritually know who you are and your traditional responsibilities, and I’m gonna say this very bluntly, non natives usually don’t understand the spiritual gifts the two spirit people possess because one truly needs to understand the indigenous teachings around indigenous ways of life prior to colonialism and Christianity
