I'm 40. I remember growing up being told over and over again to be responsible with my money. I pay my bills in full, on time. Maintain an 800+ credit rating. I pay my taxes, in full, on time. I don't commit crimes. Yet me and so many other responsible, hard working people continue to suffer the consequences of the same assholes that told us to be responsible as they sell the human race down the river. Makes you question why you toe the line and do the right thing anymore.

I just landed a $82k job. My highest paying job so far. I did the math, I will be making $1700/week… gross. That will be around $5500/month net. Rent alone is $2500 in Miami (which is where my job will be).
Imagine that… half of my monthly income will be going to rent… and $82k is considered a descent salary. But in 2024, that barely enables you to scratch the middle class.

I remember renting an apartment in the 90’s for $650. And it was a newer 2 bedroom. Rent is crazy now.

Retired now. Where I worked $82,000 a year gross equates to $5125 a month net. If you don't contribute to a retirement plan like I did then it could equate to $5500 a month net.

I have 700+ credit, no missed payments in years and recently Chase reduced the credit limit on my cards with them by 80%. They clearly know something is coming.
Chase just raised my credit limit by 3k and I didn’t ask for it.

I’m not sure why we pay property taxes. Why don’t they just print money to cover all the property tax that they expect people to pay. I don’t mind paying property taxes for any investment property but I do mind paying for my primary home.
Without that tax local gov would go broke. That's the reason why you have low tax on your salary.
Here is in EU it's mostly the opposite. We have zero (or very low property taxes) but loose 40-50% from the salary.

My sons are i their 30s. The older one moved abroad 10 years ago. My younger one looked into that about 3 years ago. Just yesterday, he told me that is now seriously planning to move out of the US. I am planning my retirement overseas. In other words, we are bailing.

Make sure you research well before you make that move. I had a few friends whom made that move overseas just to move back to the states. All the Americans is doing when moving to other countries is rising the prices for the locals in there country. I’m just going off my experiences visiting my parents country of Panama 🇵🇦.
We moved out of the states back in January to a small Caribbean island. Our rent is less than half what our mortgage was in the states. Wild. We live on $3k here. In the States we were paycheck to paycheck on an over $8k a month salary.
I have a house cleaner here, never had that in the States and I drink mojitos on the beach every weekend.
The States are no longer for the middle class. Policy after policy has ensured that.

The problem with free markets in US for the last 20 years is the act of socializing of risk and privatizing profits. Banks should never have been bailed out 2008 by tax payers.

my parents were technically poor, much poorer then our social circle. But they always said they were lower middle class. Always holding to that American dream, I think these days people have seen that no you are just poor and the dream is an illusion as the middle class is being crushed.
