986 Shift Cable Adjustment and Shift-Right Bushing Install - Boxster S 550 Spyder Project Car

- Installed the Function First Shift Right bushing / bearing kit on my 2004 Boxster S 550 Spyder to try to fix the sloppy shifter feel. It was a huge improvement.
If you are following the series you know that my 986 has a 2nd gear grind. The hope was that rebuilding the shifter and properly adjusting the cables would fix the grinding issue, but it did not. It looks like I will be pulling the transmission and replacing 2nd gear.

Thanks for the Boxster videos! We just picked up a nice 2000 S after passing on an 03 that had 2nd gear grind. But I need to work on the cables because it does not self center very well when cold, making it difficult to tell 1st from reverse.
Congrats on the new boxster! Yeah it won’t be cheap for me to fix the 2nd gear grind but should be a fun project to take the transmission apart.
Love the anniversary edition, hope to own one in the future. Enjoyed the videos.
I hope you do as well 🙏🏻 Thanks for watching
Had your same 2nd gear grind or it would pop out, did the front engine mount and now it back to normal shifting including 2nd gear. Thank you for your video,
I’m glad to hear the front motor mount replacement fixed it for you. It’s looking like I’ll need to replace 2nd gear and the syncro
@@LenartoGarage look forward to the video
Try shifting into second with an overhand grip so you are pulling more into your body than pulling straight back. Also does second shift better or easier after warming up and cruising at highway speed?
At this point I’ve tried all angles haha. 2nd gear is definitely toast. It does seem to get better when everything is up to temp, but it doesn’t eliminate the issue.
Get the transmission fluid good and hot with some spirited driving then change it. Preferences are for the OEM transmission fluid over others. Might need to do this once or twice if the fluid wasn’t serviced regularly to get out the gunk.
Try a race grade gearbox oil first
I tried changing the transaxle oil with liquid moly hypoid gear oil. No change unfortunately. The oil looked decent surprisingly. Not too much debris in there.
