Wing Commander (DOS) - Intro & First Mission (Enyo 1)

  • Here we have the classic space simulation game Wing Commander by Chris Roberts. This video shows the full introduction sequence and first mission.
    The game was first released by Origin Systems for the PC (MS-DOS) on September 26, 1990.
    Wing Commander brought space combat to a level approaching the Star Wars films. Set in the year 2654, it featured a multi-national cast of pilots from the "Terran Confederation" flying missions against the predatory, aggressive Kilrathi, a feline warrior race.
    Cockpit performance affected gameplay: going above and beyond the call of duty resulted in medals and promotions, and success or failure on certain critical missions would even decide the player's plot progress, "winning" or "losing". (info taken from Wikipedia)
    When I first played WC on a friends PC I was totally blown away, particuarly because I owned an Atari ST which could in no way run a game with this kind of graphics and sound. To an 11 year old it was an epic experience, oozing amtosphere and really making you feel part of the game world. The running sequence from mission briefing to your fighter still makes me grin with anticipation.
    21 years after it release, it is obviouslly starting to showing it's age graphically. The graphics are completely sprite based and look very pixalted close up. Also, being sprite based does the animations of the spacecraft no favours due to the lack of fluidity. But as long as you can see past that, it is still a lot of fun to play today.
    This version of the game is running through DOSBox. However it was re-released for Windows (and fixed for modern CPU's and also the addition of enhanced sound) as part of the Kilrathi Saga.
    (And yeah, I should have used a couple of missles on that Salthi that got away. As for the asteroid hitting me, that's what happens when you look down at the keyboard at the wrong moment...)

    I played this game when I was 12-13. I'm 45 now and i still remember the names of the fighters: Hornet, Scimitar, Rapier (the heavy one I don't remember heh!). Salthi, Dralthi, Krant and Jalthi for the "furballs", the Kilrathi. "Ralari" was the name of their destroyer and "Tiger's Claw" the name of the carrier where you took off from.
    Noone will ever come close to understanding the tension, the importance and the level of commitment I had with this and some other games of the era, like X-Wing, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and F-117 Stealth Fighter. I really lived the fights.

      It was the Raptor, two mass driver, two ion cannons.
      I am two years older than you and know perfectly well what do‘re talking about. :-)
      In my best days I would play WC 1 with the goal of destroying every Kilrathi ship there was in the missions, letting none escape. I managed in the end.

      @@derandere4965 I read you! - Yes, the terran heavy was the Raptor, with those curved side panels.
      In my case, when I first played the game I was very bad at leading the shots and coordinating my eyes and hands and I barely scraped through the missions. I never received the promotion beyond the Scimitar and in the end my side lost the war (yes, it's possible to finish the game with a bad result!).
      A couple of years later I revisited it, did much better, and I still remember my satisfaction when I was summoned to the commander's office to be transferred to the Rapiers, near the end of the (then) successful campaign in the "Vega Sector".
      Cheers mate, those were really happy times :)

      @@MotoGreciaMarios, I know it‘s a dynamic campaign and on one occasion I lost a crucial mission or two in order to see one of those „bad“ lines of the game. But there was only one mission that remained extremely hard for me until the end, and that was when you had to defend the defecting Ralari destroyer from the Gratha wing (two lasers, to mass drivers). I hated the Gratha, they were very well armored and - although somewhat lacking in firepower - much more maneuverable than the terrifyingly armed Jalthi heavy fighter.
      It‘s disconcerting to see how all these details remained put in my long-term memory…
      And I had never problems with hitting them (apart from the Salthi fighters maybe). The important thing was to hitting the same armor zone more than once with all you guns, otherwise you would just waste precious time (poor Ralari) working away different shields while waiting for your internal heat to decrease again.

    • @MotoGreciaMarios
      @MotoGreciaMarios 2 роки тому

      @@derandere4965 Well, I just blasted away at them happy if any shots got on target. Then I got smarter and used the afterburner more efficiently in order to stay at optimal distance and this made the difference.
      I've got to admit I don't remember the defecting Ralari defence although I do remember the Gratha and how effective they were. I learned to hate their "hunched" look!

    • @derandere4965
      @derandere4965 2 роки тому +1

      @@MotoGreciaMarios, true. I used the afterburner right from the start. It was especially valuable against the light Salthi and the heavily armed Jalthi - to remain in punching distance and to get out of harm‘s way.

    I picked this up from the bargain bin in the early 90s. I absolutely loved this game, and when my parents got a sound blaster (instead of the stock pc beep beep speaker) it shocked me how good the sound could be on a pc. The FMV games were cool, but there was a chertain charm WC1 and WC2 had.
    Of all the wing commander games I certainly played this one the most. I would do every run again and again until I was the one to kill every Kilrathi ship, no running allowed, no wingman kills allowed. I even experimented by intentionally losing some to see how far I could go down, storywise before coming back. The biggest surprise to me was one of the last missions they called impossible, I managed to win. Even though I had a clear win, they still treated it as a loss... they didn't even program in the possibility of the player winning.

So it's kind of a processing power poor man's 3D. Once your eyes/brains adjust to the boxiness of resized low-res sprites, basically felt like 3D. :-)
