  • To get your grass to spread easily make sure to use the fastest organic fertilizer of them all; sodium nitrate is just as fast as using synthetic fertilizers like ammonium sulfate which is water soluble and plant-available right out of the bag.

      Ooo, nothing screams die hard hobby like steeping chicken manure in water to form a liquid tea. Lol. I am experimenting with steeping a grass clippings tea to experiment with but man, it smells like death. 😂

    I am a little confused . Didn’t you used to live somewhere up North? When did you move South?

      We moved from Klamath Falls Oregon to Camarillo CA in late '22. My first vids for the new place started going live in Nov of 22. The yard here was terrible when I moved in so I had to rely on a lot of old footage from Oregon in my vids in early '23.

    How often can we apply this sulfur; weekly, monthly, during the heat of summer etc

    I just planted a new lawn and it's coming in great but there are many weeds and bald spots. I want to confirm when to spray those buggers dead? The majority of everything i read says wait till after the 4th Mow. I just did the first mow and also want to spread additional seed to fill in the patchs. What would be your opinion on best timeline of doing things. Spread seed before second mow, mow, and then spray the weeds before the fresh seeds germinate? this is my first time planting a lawn and im loving it but im a noob.

    EXCELLENT video! You sprinkle the fertilizer over the brown patches, don't need to pull out the brown grass?

      Great question and thanks! I mowed the dead ryegrass as low as I could and then leave it like that. The fert goas on those areas too because bermuda (like many other spreadable grass types) have underground rhizomes so even if I don't see above ground leaves yet the underground system is still spreading and the fert will help it out. During proper summer, June through Sept these warm season grasses will overtake the brown patches very quickly.

    Pretty sure sodium nitrate can be used to make a bomb

      that might be the reason why buying it straight up is hard. I just like green grass, LOL

      That's ammonium nitrate. Sodium Nitrate aka Chilean Nitrate is organic, a lot of it comes from Chile mined from the Atacama desert. My guess is it may be banned in CA.

    The drought and heat in NE FL is killing my lawn. The tap water doesnt do well like natural hydrogen rain water.

      as is always the case, rain water is always best (unless it's a flood), do your best without stress during the harder parts of the year and take advantage of the best times of the year. :)

    The reason i only use organic in summer for cool season grass is because its tough to burn grass with slow release organic. But its 2x more expensive and im applying low rates than synthetic.
    Urea is my go to simply because its cheap and works the best.
    But i only do 2 apps of preemergent a year and spot spray with a post.
    Fungicide only when i see fungus. Minimal amount of the chemicals is what i try to strive for. Idk if the synthetic fert is bad for the envioronment or not but i just dont have the money for organic yesr round. Your yard always looks awesome tho.

      so glad you liked it; I need to get a good 2024 series going on different ways of incorporating more natural inputs into the lawn and less synthetics.

    Do you think those brown areas are shallow or compacted at all? 🤔

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 місяці тому +1

      No, I've dug up sprinkler heads there a year ago. It's very nice soil. It was just the thickest area of Kikuyugrass that was in the yard last year. Once the Kikuyu was killed off it's just been a waiting game for the Bermuda to spread into the area. I have refused to seed Bermuda there because I don't want two different varieties of Bermuda in the yard. I don't know what variety is there right now since it was planted by a homeowner before I lived here and I don't know what they seeded. With day time temps finally getting into the 80s I don't think it'll be long before the whole lawn is green.

    Do herbacides slow or stop the spread of rhizomes in KBG or RTF?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 місяці тому +1

      herbicides are never good for the grass. In the best of conditions grasses tolerate herbicides and under poor conditions herbicides harm grasses and the desirable biology in the soil. I do use herbicides, but only as little as I possibly can. If I was really interested in pushing the spread of rhizomes as much as possible then I'd try my very best to not use any herbicides at all, or at least for a long period of time.
