I live in Oklahoma and I don’t really do the 10 item wardrobe right now, but I’m planning to work my way to it. Before my weight loss, I couldn’t find pieces that expressed my true style because I was plus sized and my options were so limited. Finding quality pieces was even more difficult. The weight loss has changed my shape and think there will be more changes since I have about 30 more pounds to lose. I’m still figuring out what I like in my new shape. As I figure out what works, I’ll get rid of what doesn’t. I actually prefer to not have to change out much each season, so in fall and winter, I’ll wear some darker colors and add layers (tights, sweaters, boots) but keep most of my closet the same.

Thank you for adding the disclaimer about how your turnover is higher because you are a UA-camr. We all need to be reminded that there is no need to replace something simply because we see someone showing us something new! It might be the perfect fit for someone else, but we don’t all need to buy everything shown.

Jennifer, I have been wondering about this aspect of your wardrobe for a long while, so I'm glad you spoke about it! In Connecticut, I feel that, as far as wardrobe choices go, we have a different season every two to three months! That is, if the weather is behaving normally. I have loads of opaque tights of every color, footless and regular, because layering is very helpful! It's in the sixties and seventies during the daytime now, but fifties and sometimes forties at night, so it's cold when I'm dressing for work. I wore my first pullover of the season the other day, afraid I'd be too warm at work, but it was okay. That's another factor, when your workplace has unpredictable temperatures that keep you guessing. But it was a cotton sweater from Quince, and I recently got two of them; it's their cably cotton - organic, I think, too! - pullover. I love them. I probably won't wear my wool or cashmere ones until the daytime temps are down in the forties. So, because of what I've learned from you, I like to keep a ten-item wardrobe in my very small closet, and I just have to switch things out every two to three months. But I like having the focus of the smaller selection. Thank you! xo

This topic is rightful my alley. We live in colorado, rocky mountains, the summer highs are above 100 degrees and the winter lows are below 20 degrees. I enjoy playing into each distinct sesson, esp w colors. As the temperatures shift. Therefore I keep my core items to 10, and then use tights, shawls, leggings under skirts to fill in. I too buy my sweaters a little larger than I need, but that is because I always wear a tank top or blowse under them, that way if 8 get to warm while I'm out I can remove the sweater. Planning and buying the extras is my favorite part. This fall I even went through my makeup and jewelry and separated out the ones that match my fall clothes. Thank you for your ten item wardrobe inspiration!! Love it!

I live in WI (4 distinct seasons) but switch out my wardrobe twice a year-early March and then early October. I have a wardrobe and another closet where I keep the out-of-season clothes. I have a much more than 10-item wardrobe and wear in-season clothes at different times, depending on the weather. This way is easier for me.

I’ve found that I need three wardrobes - winter, summer and a third that does the more mild spring / autumn weather. Dressing in an ‘autumnal’ way isn’t such a big thing in Australia as we don’t have a lot of deciduous trees with changing leaves so it works to have the same clothes for the similar weather of autumn and spring. Once it gets really warm in summer almost all my spring clothes have to get put away.

I’ve been switching out my seasonal clothes ever since my first apartment when my closet was literally a free standing broom closet. I would box up my off-season clothes to store at my parent’s house. Even with a normal sized closet, it’s been my habit for going on 40 years. My clothes and I get a nice vacation from each other that way. 😉

    Hello Jennifer,
I have less than 10 items for my wardrobe by choice. I keep all my items including handbags and footwear for several years until they are worn out. I have black suede winter boots that were made in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and this upcoming winter it will be their 12th season and they are still beautiful. I often have people compliment me when I wear them.

I love these videos. Once I started thinking of us as having 7 seasons not 4 it made more sense to me. We have summer, warm fall, cold/rainy snowy fall, winter, deep winter, cold spring and nice spring . Obviously there is overlap between the seasons and sometimes we can get a warm fall fall followed by a frosty fall day in my head this makes more sense.
I would never wear my parka and fleece lined leggings and knee high snow boots in anything but deep winter. Just like I couldn’t wear cute suede loafers, a skirt and a sweater in cold fall.

What has worked for me is to have clothes that can work for several seasons, such as button shirts, light weight sweaters and cardigans, jeans, jean jackets, coats such as barn chore, and trench. Also, pants that are made from a three to four season material.

I love your check dress and the navy one! I live in central Canada so have very distinct seasons and do not follow a ten item wardrobe as unfortunately for my lifestyle it wouldn't work. For example in winter, I have nice thinner sweaters for going out, then thick chunky ones for shovelling waist high snow, then other heavy sweathsirts for my snowblowing days as they end up smelling like gasoline lol.

Enjoyed this video, and especially love the blue corduroy dress on you! You look amazing and mysterious in navy. 😄 I do stretch my wardrobe for other seasons. Quince has become my favorite place to shop, I’ve been switching over to natural fibers, they are usually much more comfortable and breathable, as well as sustainable and healthy for our skin and the environment. I love the combo of a silk skirt with a cashmere sweater, especially if monochromatic, so chic and comfortable. It can be dressed up or down with a pretty scarf &/or jewelry, fancy shoes or simple sneakers and stud earrings. I also love silk skirts with my leather jacket, I think it’s a neat juxtaposition. In the winter, I wear my cashmere sweaters constantly with either jeans or wool plaid skirts and boots. I also enjoy wearing hats, Autumn is perfect for a felt hat with pretty much any outfit, in winter I enjoy wearing wool berets or a newsboy cap.

Yes, I do stretch over seasons. Some items go spring-summer, some summer-autumn with maybe tights, leggings underneath. And autumn-winter with maybe a thicker under layer like a long-sleeved tee. But now you’ve inspired me to find a thicker fabric dress… 🤔

We don’t experience extreme changes in temperature in the southern US, so I tend to stick with spring/summer clothing for about nine months each year. I simply add a coat, jacket, sweater or cardigan as needed and change footwear from sandals to flats to boots. I’m actually really happy I can do this, taking care to retire something once it stops looking its best.

    Hi Jennifer!
After finishing my comment, I am on my way to purchase the corduroy Somerset dress! It is the perfect fall into winter dress for here in the PNW. I love the simplicity of the solid color that also brings a creative versatility! I also see myself wearing it for at least two Fall / Winter seasons to justify my purchase.
The solid navy, in corduroy immediately transported me to an early Ralph Lauren vibe. I am already thinking of styling it with burgundy leather boots or burgundy suede flats.
I also love the Lily Silk Polo . . .
So classic and wonderful on you!
    Thank you for your inspiration!
I try revisit my closet after your “Ten Item” videos . . . Just like a boutique it’s fun to re-imagine and re-merchandise when inspired.
    Happy Fall!

Hello Jennifer, Your new Channel-esque dress is beautiful.
I invested in a new Ralph Lauren dress this summer while shopping in Chicago; it’s a shirt dress with one large ruffle on the hemline; I wish it came in petite as I’m loosing inches and need it altered now.
My Talbot’s denim skirt are worn all year long almost daily; I update them occasionally and wear the older ones for gardening. I wear these with sandals, then loafers and finally leggings and boots for winter.
My JCREW navy crepe lined skirt is another garment I wear all year long.

I just finished your book „Life lessons of Madame Chic“ (it helped me improve my English) and you are so right. It‘s the little things in everyday life that make us feel good. A cluttered home makes me feel crappy, so I put more effort into a tidy decorated home. I also bought myself a few sets of nice clothes for around the house, because I‘m tired of spending most of my life in old threadbare clothes.

I have enough space to have all of my clothes in my closet all at once. But I divided them by season so that I have different "10 item wardrobes" in my closet, so to speak. I can then pull pieces out of another "10 item wardrobe" in a very uncomplicated way, even if it is technically the wrong seasonal "10 item wardrobe". I do this a lot in the transitional weeks, for example one warmer day I take a short sleeve dress from my "spring" wardrobe, but a long sleeve top from the "autumn" section the next day if it is cooler. Technically, september is autum anyway, but temperatures might be extremely different from day to day.

This was wonderful! You subs comments were great too. I live in Clearwater Florida and, when not evacuating from too frequent hurricanes, we basically have 2 seasons. Wet season and dry season. I've been told the "easiest" is to wear the same clothes all year but just add jeans and cardigans. I'm not a jeans person and haven't worn an actual pair of pants in at least 7 years. Our temperatures are much, much warmer than our averages, at least 4 to 9 degrees higher per day. We are still at 90ish which is extremely unusual. I'd love to learn to plan a 10 item wardrobe but cannot figure out the Core and the Extras. I've got your books but still am having trouble. Do you have a video or blog post to explain? Thank you!!

I love that silhouette of dress on you!! I recently discovered a brand that I am in love with - Ivy City Co. Their dresses and tops and 💯 my style. I’ve been trying to find a ditsy floral brown dress that is nursing-friendly and NOT polyester. When I found the high quality cotton one on Ivy City, I wasn’t sure if I should pay a higher price point (it is $118) rather than the $60 range I was looking for. BUT- it is everything I want- perfect brown ditsy floral, tiered, nursing-friendly, and high quality fabric - the ONLY one I can find that meets all my requirements.
I can see why a 10-item wardrobe is so good when you invest in quality pieces. I need to get dresses that are nursing-friendly and larger size, and I’m going to get this dress from Ivy City Co.
And since I know that I love that silhouette, maybe I’d get another to get the free shipping. I’ve never spent that much money on a dress. So I am thinking of trying the 10 item wardrobe . I have my favorites that I always wear, so maybe now is a good time to try??
I love red all year round, haha! I am actually wearing a red button down short sleeve shirt over a tan plaid wool skirt.
Where I live, we can have 4 seasons in a single day, so I don’t really do a seasonal wardrobe. I just keep my heavy knits on the shelf above my closet rack, and I bring my jackets to the forefront of my closet in the Fall. 🍂🍁

I live in Norway and the seasons are very varied. Still I find it very easy to stretch my wardrobe for 2 seasons like you do. The key is to have lots of layering options. I've switched to my autumn/winter wardrobe now and it works so well. Take a shirt as an example. I can wear it on it's own now that it's been quite warm and when it gets colder I have 2 different cardigan options - one thick and warm, the other a thinner version - so I'm ready for any temperature 🍁❄️☀️🌻

Yes, you just need to tailor your wardrobe to your needs. Don't worry about the number but get it down to the sections that are manageable for you. You can think of your outside clothes as your workwear and create a separate category for that if it helps you compartmentalize it that way. In the same way that special occasion clothes sometimes constitute as workwear for me, if that makes sense.

I agree with you splitting it up in 2 Seasons, cause Fall & winter can intermingle, and Spring and Summer can be worn that same way also? Like here in Vegas, it's all about layering on and off in the Fall, (which is not even seen here at all?) Then in Winter, with no Fall in sight..layering again on and off, to tue point where those layering items are to be kept in your car (as I was recommented when I moved here)🤔 Like, lighter type jackets to heavier type ones..In essence, all types of jackets and sweaters! What's sad about Vegas is..living here opposed to visiting here? There is no fashion sense here at all, (noone cares about dressing up for the occasion.) I still do it cause it's ingrained in me? It's a jeans and T-shirt kind of State! Unlike Los Angeles and Miami, that is the difference between a Metropolitan City and others that are not!

I do six season capsules: Spring - light sweaters and slacks, jeans, ight knit dresses, rains slicker and rain boots, blazers and light jackets: Spring/Summer - adding some sleeveless, shorts, sandals; Hot summer (90s weather) add in sundresses, mostly shorts and capris; Autumn - add in jeans and slacks, light sweaters, put away light florals and pastels but still can be anywhere from 60s to 80s; Autumn/Winter - add cable knit sweaters, turtlenecks, lots of layered dressing, heavier knit dresses, ankle boots, quilted jackets; dead of Winter (freezing) heavy sweaters, riding boots and foul weather boots, heavy peacoat and long coat, knit maxi dresses and holiday wear. I have little black dresses that can be formalized with accessories and have light and heavier long dresses should a formal occasion arise that cross seasons. Where I abandon a minimalized wardrobe is with shoes, which can dress up or down a basic wardrobe and probably more than I need handbags which I use to accessorize since my jewelry wardrobe is quite small and basic.

..I do not ever see myself as a" 10- Item Wardrobe " wonan...lol.
I lived in California, in Long Beach, and it was COLD at night ( sometimes down below 40 degrees after 7 pm...) so I wore a lot of Sweaters and various jackets. / Coats .
I have looked at some of your Links to dresses ,and such.. but found these are quite expensive, for some of us that live on a Budget.
Even with a " discount " code...these are expensive, and out of our price range for many of us.

I live on the US East Coast and I struggle the most with finding comfortable footwear for the fall and winter season. The sidewalks in our town made of old bricks and because I travel in Europe I find that I’m navigating the same type of old sidewalks and streets. So comfortable walking outdoor footwear recommendations for colder weather are always appreciated. I have not tried the Thursday Boots yet. Do they run true to size ?

I was going to suggest Thursday Boots for this. Yes, they run true to size. Mine last for years!
