Did a fuel pump recall about 3 days ago, lifted the seat and was greeted by a billion wires. Seas of scotch locks and legions of wire crimps all wired into a singular show chrome electrical box. The bike did look good with all the lights tho
I second the Lewis being the next level of electrical and now upgraded stereo's... Always helpful and very knowledgeable. Lewis and Fred Harmon cracked the code on fixing the $4000 blown infotainment module.
I just had an 18 come in for troubleshooting on a blown accessory circuit, lighting and trailer lighting not working. Original owner had piggybacked everything off the accessory power circuit. Took several hours to properly and safely rewire and power everything - and restore the accessory circuit. Good PSA, and Lewis is both a friend for 15+ years and extremely knowledgeable. I can recommend his services.
Hello, Max the last two photos were from my 2021 trike that pI purchased the trike from Complete Cycles in December 2023 and had them add additional lighting. Subsequently, I took it to Honda Power Sports last week to have a luggage rack with lights and mirrors with turn signals installed. Unfortunately, after this installation, the turn signals ceased to function. It is important to note that I did not perform any of the installations myself. I was unaware that Complete Cycles would leave such crucial wiring work incomplete. As a result, I will now need to seek the services of Lewis to rectify this issue, which will incur significant costs. Thank you for your time and quick response to my email
This wasn't meant to point you out personally, this is a recurrent problem we see, and I wanted to have a couple of examples. I would be very upset if I paid a business and that was what they gave me back!
I have a new to me 2018 Goldwing…I have very little info on history of it….i’m getting some maintenance items and a couple of accessories installed next spring…it’s going to the Honda dealer so professionals can do it…the only thing i’m gonna do is install that plug & play harness that you showed on one of your videos to make the luggage rack mounted brake light a running light too…i’m pretty handy as this is my 4th Goldwing, but as you state, let the professionals do it….ride safe…
Good Evening Max, I could not agree more and I see this often with other riders photos on the various Goldwing forum sites. I personally take great pride in all my aftermarket component installations and proud to share photos with any owner or dealer.
@@Traxxion Good Afternoon Max, as a youngster (single digits) I helped/worked with my Dad who was ex-Rolls Royce motors. After graduating high school, I completed a four (4) year Aircraft Technical Apprenticeship and retired in 2023 after 51+ years in Aviation around the world. I have always loved the technical side of aircraft/cars/bikes and generally have performed my own maintenance, upgrades, etc. Unlike my father, I never got into or was interested in panel beating and spray painting, however, he did use me for preparing the surfaces to be painted 😢. I think I'm very OCD and like to do things right. If I don't have the skill or experience, I am happy to admit the deficiency and pay someone to do the task correctly. Being honest, I now take our cars to the dealerships for the servicing and repairs. I do have OBD II scanners and I will get into some easy access sensor replacements, but no more heavy maintenance as my body is not so accepting of crawling and twisting around.
@@Traxxion Just lucky to have had a Dad (RIP) who was ex-Rolls-Royce motors, my BOAC/British Airways (4 yr) Technical Apprenticeship and 50+ years in aircraft Maintenance & Engineering.
Wow-Unbelievable-Scary. Thanks for sharing to the Gold Wing and motorcycle community. Hard to imagine that someone would take the approach of spaghetti style wiring to such a well-built vehicle.
My 2005 GL1800, I had a lot of lights on it. A lot! There were lights in every nook and cranny, every vent, under the bike, everywhere. It was wired really nice and clean. It sure lit up at night. Then one day I had to have the engine removed under warranty at the dealer. Well, needless to say, removing an 1800 engine is no small task and putting it together was no task either. Especially with the wiring, they actually called me down to the dealer when they were putting it back together to show them where all the lights were to go. We both know they aren't going to organize the wiring, they would just throw it together. After that, it was almost as bad as those pictures. For my 2018 Tour DCT, I have learned my lesson, and there are no lights on it except the Honda spoiler run/brake light. Not going through that again.
I own a auto repair shop with a master technician I also work on goldwings over 35 years I see that same thing a hi tech cars towed in need to fix what was screwed up to find the original problem , with all the nice insulators to protect your bike , more now with the can bus on our bikes now good techs must need and use lab scopes for good diagnosis also me job MAX 👍
I have used isolator as well EC connections hub and have multiple connections for lighting, trailer , siren etc and have had for 6 years with no issues etc. I do work hard to keep,it from being that messy though
😂😂😂 Max, you have a way of taking a very serious issue and putting your comedic stamp on it. I know you are serious and putting out a very important PSA, but your reactions to those pictures are priceless.
Max i was expecting you to announce the Goldstrike, Lighting Distribution Block is now being sold on Traxxion. For me it's a convent, maybe not the lest expensive way, but convent way to clean up the accessory wiring. Plus, now i have a logical way to troubleshoot any future issues. Just add the Split Wire Loom Tubing and Cloth Electrical Tape for the ends and it almost looks OEM.
That's all pretty extreme and your caution is valid. However, non-professional electricians can wire accessories correctly. The 18+ GWs are a different animal that the earlier GWs.
I dont have the newer Generation GoldWing but when it comes to tires, brakes or anything electrical on my 08 Wing, I don't mess with it. Unless its plug-n-play stuff that Electrical Connections sells.
Gonna be careful here, you'll see similar DIY accessory wiring on several popular Goldwing maintenance and vlogging channels. Some even have how-to videos on building homemade accessory fuse boxes. For a $30,000+ motorcycle! And people copy them. Crazy.
Although we should not condem those who have a go and try to learn......theres a limit when they should leave things be....that type of workmanship is normally carried out by your typical no it all.....remember a little knowledge is dangerous.
I cant tell you how many times I've told people the only TWO additions they need for a goldwing are..... highway pegs and a backrest. THAT'S IT. don't mess with it. No lights, no speakers, NOTHING. Just ride it till the wheels fall off.
my bike doesn’t quite look that bad, but I am using the Pathfinder Connection block. Only the amp to my radio mobile phone charger directly connects to the battery. Does that reduce my risk fire or damaging the bike?
I have a 2006 goldwing with 140k miles on it and it needs a fork rebuild and I'm about to get started on it. Is it worth it to get the full monty upgrade on a bike that isn't worth as much as the upgrade costs?
We do it all the time... people who are going to keep their bike just bring it in. Another thing people will do is shop for a low mileage bike, swap out, then come for the upgrade. (If they are certain they don't want a 2018+).
I just don’t understand how someone can spaghetti up wires like those and then ride that fire hazard out in the middle of nowhere. It’s true, you can’t fix stupid!
99% of every 'Christmas tree bike' I see, the owner duck walks the bike.😂 Add a good 3rd brake light and a set of quality driving lights. The buy yourself a high quality reflective riding jacket. Now take the $$$ you saved on all if those unnecessary lights and pay for advanced riding classes. Riding skills will save your ass! Lights don't.
Wow, that is crazy wiring Max. It is so common and I am glad you decided to create a video to address it. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!

Is the lighting distribution block okay to use, just plugs for accessories
Which one?

Got me thinking now. Am I safe in adding tailblazers and path blazers from Kisan Electric, both are suppose to be plug and play installations?
They are both Plug & Play installations and there are UA-cam videos for you to view these installations.
Yep if you take your time and do it correctly which means you need some knowledge of what you are doing.
They are both plug and play, and hard to mess up.

I would suggest buying a heavy gauge inline fuse for the Pathfinder block and that should do it. If it fails it will just blow the fuse.
