My parents gave me this brand new kit as a boy and I built many of the projects. They all worked flawlessly. This MW radio impressed me the most as it worked so well. I remember being very unhappy that I had to take it apart to make something else. My version of the kit was totally original and came from Philips in the Netherlands. It appears as if there is more than one version of the kit, which may explain the disparity in the results.
Really enjoyed watching today's video. A three transistor radio that I built back in the day was from the take 20 series number 9. Really worked well. It used three BC169 transistors with good volume. Cheers Bill.
Yes I had this set too and the two extension kits as well. I remember making that radio and yes it didn't work. I spent my whole life in electrics and antenna design. I'm now 68 and retired. But I'm still at it. Best 73 Paul G0MIH, HS0ZLQ.
I remember doing that circuit and being able to receive MW radio quite well. What surprises me is that my Philips EE kit was from '71 and the transistors were all PNP germanium (two AC126 and one AF116), not silicon as in yours from '69 which is quite odd. Also the diode was a germanium OA90. It seems to me quite strange that an older kit sports newer technology than what was in mine...
Mine was the same from memory(in Australia) The AF116 maybe a 119 had four leads and the leads were prone to break easily. I think the extra lead was a screen. Would have been in 66 - 67 I think. The 3 transistor design worked OK but I lived in the country and we only had two stations to choose from.
In Germany, the switched off about all of the MW radio stations some years ago. Was that the case in the UK, too? Maybe it worked better back in the 70s just because of a more comprehensive set of radio stations?

I seem to remember being pleased with mine, the kit spent most of its time with this circuit. But likewise, it did work better after dark too.
