    The sandman black suit Spidey also has the dots on the white parts of his hands, indicating that it’s the original symbiote. The Kraven 2-pack version is supposed to just be the cloth black suit, mimicking what he wore during the Kraven Hunt storyline.

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  Рік тому +2

      Yeah! I realized that during filming, but I figured for the sake of completion that it would still be useful to add even though technically it is NOT the symbiote. Especially if folks are using these buyers guides as intended then I'd hate for them to look for that figure and end up finding a variant that I didn't cover!

    Nice Buyer's Guide! You know, I own THE SECRET WARS comics, and I own a number of the McFarlane Spideys that feature Venom's original appearance, but I have never really cared much for the symbiote Spidey costume for simple reasons. The storyline was interesting, but the costume itself always looked very, very flat to me in the comics. No matter what artist drew that darned thing, the flat black just killed all the dimension of Spider or Venom's figure. So much of Spider-Man's unique physicality comes from his dynamic poses. When drawing Spidey, it's all in the foreshortening of the figure. That's where the energy and dynamics take place, and the black costume just reduced those poses from being these great three-dimensional shots of the Wall-crawler breaking out of the panels to being just a big, flat-looking blob of a silhouette on a page. It didn't matter which artist that drew Spidey in the costume, it was just very hard to deal with the fact that the costume was just killing all the life and energy in the character from panel to panel. I'm convinced that this is the primary reason why they decided to put Spider-Man back into his original red and blue duds. An artist might be able to come up with some dimensional and dynamic poses from time to time, but all that black shadow just made the job a bit tougher from page to page. And then there was this: In the black, Spidey looked less heroic. He looked a little creepy, actually. You don't really want your hero looking like a creep show, folks. You just don't. Cool or not, that costume just gave off the wrong sort of vibes for the character. Chances were extremely high that Spidey was going to have been put back into his red and blue long johns, eventually, but Spidey might have actually worn the symbiote suit a bit longer if the design hadn't flattened him out and turned him into a much darker, moodier character than Marvel bargained for.
    The best thing that could have happened with the Symbiote suit came in the form of the creation of Venom. Suddenly Spider-Man could be the heroic, dynamic Web-head again-- in his original costume. Now that dark, sinister looking suit manifested into this creepy, shadowy monstrous villain, Venom, with the huge, menacing mouth filled with teeth! Suddenly, Spidey had a stalker, and a really diabolical nightmarish new foe to fight! Now that's how you do things, folks! You make the best of what was fast becoming a bad situation. THE SECRET WARS gimmick costume suddenly turned into a modern Spider-Man enemy that would become one of our hero's greatest enemies! That's some kind of great Marvel jujitsu there!
    Sadly, I've yet to buy a single Marvel Legends Venom figure. I'm really partial to the one from that multi-pack with the Eddie Brock head that's changing into Venom. I'd like to get that one, but I don't need the other figures--just that Venom. I'll have to scout around eBay in the future, and hope to get lucky on the price some place I guess!
    Thanks for the video. It was interesting to see all the black and white costumed figures together!

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  Рік тому

      Thanks, Loston! Your perspective on the design is really interesting! It certainly derives from your work as an artist and isn't one I would have considered, but after reading what you wrote I can totally see it! I don't think there was really ever any real concern that he wouldn't return to the red and blue's though. There are only a handful of characters that have actually changed costumes and that it's been a permanent thing. The only one that comes to mind is Carol Danvers going from Ms Marvel to Captain Marvel. And you know, the idea of Spidey looking creepy in the black suit is really interesting too. Would you say that it's the same from Batman or the Punisher? Since they both are similar in being darker designed costumes?

    • @lostonwallace1396
      @lostonwallace1396 Рік тому +2

      @@ComicallyToys Well, I absolutely think it works the same for those characters in the sense that you lose dimension in the figure forms, but unlike Spider-Man, who is depicted as a likable, go-lucky everyman kind of guy with a heart of gold, Batman and the Punisher are character that put fear into criminals, and both are often presented as silhouette shapes to begin with to add a darker mood. What works for characters like Batman and Punisher doesn't work for characters like Spider-Man, Superman, Captain America, etc. It goes against their very nature to be presented as dark and gritty. They have been in the past, because comic books is a medium that's always starved for new and bold ideas, but when portrayed this way, it never works out well or at all.
      Many comic fans today barely remember Batman in his gray and blue uniform with the original utility belt, and the bat in the yellow oval. Sure, they've seen it--had a taste of it a few times in series like BATMAN: HUSH, and I'm sure fans who collect trades saw Jim Aparo's last hooray in BATMAN: KNIGHTFALL, either via the comics or the trades. Having grown up on THAT Batman for 30 years prior to him becoming black and gray, etc, I can tell you as a fan, and as an artist that the gray and blue is the better costume. It's not just an aesthetic choice or because of nostalgia that I say this. It's because the blue and gray costume worked better on the page, and presented a much clearer visual message. Grays and blacks always look very flat, and kill the form of a human figure. It's just a fact. You can get all those silhouettes out of the blue and gray just as easily as you can with the modern costume, but you can get a lot more depth out of his original duds. A LOT more. Modern comics seemed doomed to relearning the lessons of yesterday when it comes to costume design, and what looks good on paper. Having drawn Batman professionally for kids books many times, I have experience with the character, and I am well aware of the limitations of his different costumes. I've done full-color work, and have dealt with the headaches first hand! LOL. Too many fans want to apply realism to superheroes, which are polar opposite of reality. Superheroes are high fantasy. Plain and simple. Realism in costume design, powers, secret identities, and all of that need not apply! lol
      In reality if there was a Billionaire named Bruce Wayne who trained to be an unstoppable fighter, and created a secret identity as Batman his secret would be all over the internet in a week! I mean, you can't build cars and planes without a team of people working on them, and then there's the massive spending, and that spending has to be accounted for come tax time. Even if you hide it for a while, you can't forever!
      Wayne's accountant: "Mr Wayne! You seemed to have spent $15 million dollars on sports car parts, a jet engine, and a super-titanium alloy sheeting?!!?? Last month, you purchases a speed enhanced racing boat, alongside a shipment of something designated "ordinance materials" from a company called Dura-tech Industrial Explosives! Also, Mister Wayne, the ShieldGard Institute left a message at my office for you, asking if the "kevlar prototype suit" has met with your satisfaction! What is all this about a kevlar prototype suit??!! What's all this for? Are you that BATMAN character on the news???!!" Yeah, that's about how that would go down. A Wayne employee who worked on these secret projects would rat him out in a week.
      Or, maybe if ol' Bruce got lucky, and no one did rat him out, in reality this would likely happen:
      "Billionaire Bruce Wayne was found dead on Elm Street this morning. Dressed as "the Batman", Wayne died trying to swing from the rooftop of a building when his rope's grappling spike pulled out of the adjacent building's concrete wall. More on this bizarre tragedy at 11:00 PM. Back to you, Connie!"
      My longwinded point is that superhero comics are at their best when they aren't overdone, overthought out, and when the talent on the books know what they're doing. I generally ignore most fan "logic" when it comes to superheroes, because it's often silly. "Batman wears armor because it doesn't make sense that Batman can't just be shot and killed by a bullet! So he has to wear armor. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense!" Superheroes don't make sense. Again, it's high fantasy. It doesn't have to make sense. Batman can't be shot because...HE'S BATMAN! That's always been good enough for me! Superheroes aren't about real life, they're about being larger than life, and that's just where they live. I guess that I just subscribe to what I know to be true logic. I can suspend my disbelief and just enjoy superheroes for what they are. Spidey is happy go-lucky. He's not dark and grim. 'Nuff said! ;)

      @ComicallyToys  Рік тому +1

      @@lostonwallace1396 Hahaha well said! When thinking about the "realism" of certain characters, I've always though about how bad Bruce Wayne is in his decision to fight crime. Like, Alfred should really have gotten him into counseling/therapy early on because there are so many children in the real world that do lose both parents, and while maybe not in as tragic as a circumstance, none of them because crazed vigilantes!

      @lostonwallace1396 Рік тому +2

      @@ComicallyToys One of the things about the Spider-Man changing from the red and blue costume to the black. At the time this happened, superhero comic books weren't like they are today, where we know that any changes made are going to eventually be reversed. Nowadays it's extremely commonplace for characters to get new costumes, to have new people take over the mantle, for characters to die and then come back, etc. Back in the mid 1980s though, continuity was still a BIG thing. Most of the comic book audience reading Spider-Man was inclined to believe that the black costume was meant to be a permanent replacement for Spidey's original digs. The mid-80s ushered in a lot of (what I considered to be) bad things for superhero comics. It ushered in the age of the gimmick to up coming sales. CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTH showed the industry and the readers that you could do away with 50 years of continuity, and just REBOOT everything. This reboot was meant to be a fresh, new start that would generate a lot of new possibilities for hero comic titles, building interest and boosting sales figures. CRISIS made a LOT of money for DC. Everyone HAD to have every issue to keep up with all the new changes that was happening in the DC Universe. CRISIS flew off the shelves. Naturally, Marvel didn't want to be outdone by their competition, so THE SECRET WARS, a less thought out big even book was created to be Marvel's big gimmick. It promised to shake up the Marvel Universe forever. Only maybe the first four or five issues of the series were actually good (IMO), but SECRET WARS sold big too. Spidey's costume change was one of the biggest takeaways from the series, and seemed to be pretty much a permanent thing. It was treated as such, and I think it was intended to be permanent, to validate the point of SECRET WARS. CRISIS was justified to "simplify" the DC Multiverse into one cohesive universe. It didn't work because creators that wrote the comic titles after the series managed to make the DC Universe even more convoluted than ever before. lol. SECRET WARS had promised that the Marvel Universe would never be the same again. Hulk started losing his newly acquired Banner intelligence. Ben Grimm decided to stay behind on the Secret Wars planet, opening the FF up to a new replacement. Colossus no longer loved Kitty Pride. Etc. The Spidey costume was proof positive that THE SECRET WARS wasn't just a stunt. It was Marvel making major changes that would alter their universe forever. Spidey had never had a significant costume change before, so right away, fans were divided on it. Marvel got support for the new costume, alongside a lot of angry letters wanting the old costume back almost immediately. Heh. Marvel was determined to stick to their guns on the new costume. Artists had a tough time managing to draw it panel to panel. It was much faster to draw, but harder to make "spectacular" in terms of three-dimension. Foreshortening makes figures look dynamic on a page, but foreshortening requires body parts to overlap in a way to create distance and dimension. That's hard to do with black-on-black. Every time Spidey's arm was drawn out in front of him, or his knee was bent in mid-swing, with the soul of his foot out in front, things just came out looking rather flat. Even with the rim lighting helping out. It was becoming dullsville. Sales on Spider-Man were good, but I don't think that whatever bump the Spidey books got from THE SECRET WARS didn't last as long as they'd hoped. THE WEB OF SPIDER-MAN had a strong launch, but it cooled off very quickly. Eventually, all the Spidey titles started cooling off a bit.
      The storyline of the suit turning evil and eventually becoming the Eddie Brock/Venom was perhaps the best comeback to an initial misguided gimmick that I've ever seen in comics. Somehow, Marvel took a poor decision, and turned it into a great storyline that lead to Spider-Man gaining a great new nemesis! Spidey also gained new sales figures, and even more fandom. You just can't beat that!

      Venom has evolved throughout the years so he does have a few different forms.
