  • Do you have ants excavating holes in your container plants? Do you have ants crawling up your citrus trees? Did you recently have a heat wave and Ants keep increasing numbers? Well then this video is for you. Ants can be quite a problem in the garden in large numbers. In this episode I show you how ants create nests inside your container pots. The queen Ant will fly around and will lay eggs in the soil. In as little as 30 days the eggs become adult ants by the thousands. The continue to multiply if left unchecked. These particular ants that dig holes in containers or pots are often the Argentine Ants. These are an invasive species of ants from South America. They are not natives and will displace the native ants because of their ability to reproduce quickly and aggressive nest making with can contain thousands of Ants in one nest. If left untreated these ants can eat the organic fertilizers out of your soil and damage sensitive root structures causing growth problems. They seem to like the black plastic containers the most.
Also, Often times the reason Ants crawl up your fruit trees or other plants is because they are collecting 'honeydew' from the excretions of Aphids. Ants also protect and harbor other insects like scales and aphids, making them a bigger threat by increasing the population of the bad pests. I show you how you can reduce or eliminate Ants from your soil organically without the use of typical toxic baits or poison.

Food grade Diotomaceous works. Put it in the soil. I noticed all my soil bags had ants. They also won't walk thru chalk so if plants are in a container chalk the outside with your own art work.

Are you noticing and increase in Ant populations lately? Do you have ants digging holes inside of you potted or container plants? I do here in San Diego near the coast. This is an invasive species called the Argentine Ant originally from South America and not native to California.

The Millennial Gardener uses two layers of Duct tape, one facing the tree stem and the other rolled up and laid on top of the first tape so there's a sticky side facing out. The ants wont go past that barrier.

I have a huge problem with ants around my citrus trees and have tried various methods of control. Cinnamon did not work for me, and I have yet to try the sticky tape and vaseline. I tried liquid saccharine with some success, but best of all was baby talc spread around the base of the tree you can also sprinkle it up the trunk. The ants wont cross the talc and appear to have abandoned the nearby nests.

It works fine but be sure to add more vaseline periodically if it comes off

From my experience, this is a bad idea to use Vaseline
Vaseline will destroy your tree bark
