Don’t do what my dad did many moons ago. There was a colony of ants under a gatepost. So dad in his infinite wisdom, that being “fire kills everything” decided to pour quite a bit of petrol down the ant holes around the gatepost. Then he added a flame. The result was amazing, the gatepost and a 2 foot chunk of concrete went about 6 feet into the air with ants flying everywhere. It would seem there was quite a void under the gatepost where the fumes welled up and the combustion had nowhere to go when lit. It didn’t slow him down though, wasps nests, stinging nettles, pretty much anything got the 4 star treatment from the old man.
I have also had some exiting episodes by mistaking petrol for paraffin and when i tried to light it the most magnificent bang and a cast iron manhole cover blew off and went 10 feet into the air the neigbours loved living near me (in constanr fear)

Good video thank you. My only question is that baking soda is not borax and does not contain it. They are both alkaline and the ph levels are similar though. I have always used Ant Stop bait stations under a brick and they have always worked for me.
I use Nippon Ant gel and mix it with some sugar. Put inside a lid of some sort then put another lid over the top and tape them together. There should be just a tiny gap between the lids to let the ants in. I scatter them under the plants near the lawn when I see ants around. Seems to work.
Hi sean I've been using a couple of good squirts of washing up liquid with a bit of cooking oil in a watering and pour the full can over any mound you see. Been using this for over a month now and they dont come back so it's cheap and effective I think it coats them and then they suffocate
Hi Lyndon there does seem to be some truth in this, but I'd probably add in that too much oil could cause issues. Although vegetable oil is biodegradable I'd want to know what the happy medium is. Did you measure any of the quantities or just maybe like half a cup with 4 or 5 squirts of soap and rest with water?.. love the tip 😊👍
@@LawnRight didnt measure just a couple of squirts of washing liquid maybe twice the amount you would use to wash the pots not much oil either prob no more than 50 or 60ml if I were to measure it

Haha...the idea that you have to figure out where the ants are by looking for orange marks in your lawn, rather than 1 foot high mounds that totally block your mower! And I'm in the UK - we're not talking about any of those big foreign ants!
Good question.. for me I just want to control the numbers and get the numbers down a bit so if the mounds stop coming up that's good enough for me. Its good to keep some in the lawn for the soil health
I often get black Ants in my house mostly in the kitchen. Im going to try to make a paste and spread on the in the corners of the counters see the will go for it.
By bitter experience I have found that the only guaranteed quick way to do it is to physically dig out the nest including all the egg chambers and hopefully finding the queen in the process. I had one old nest that was three feet deep and four feet across. Sprinkling stuff on the surface is pointless. After sterilizing the soil with boiling water in the wheelbarrow and mixing in fresh soil I have then filled the hole back in and re-seeded the surface. This is guaranteed if you have found the queen and all the egg chambers. If the nest is under concrete or a wall and can't be got at the less quick but also most effective way I have found is nippon liquid. If you are patient and leave a few drops the right distance from the nest at the right times you can eventually get the workers to carry the fluid back to the Queen and after a week or two the nest will eventually die.

Have you ever managed to get rid of the ants? I have 20+ small hills popping up after every reasonable rain fall. Never had any until 4 years ago. Seems to be getting worse every year.
It's not until watching I realize how lucky I've been with my clients not having ant issues. Unless I missed it but did you cover which spraying tickets are needed for a commercial user?
thanks Shaun, very helpful, quick question I am on a heavy clay soil and the lawn is really suffering with the warm dry spell we've been having, great for me but not so much for the lawn as the ground is really hard and cracking in places, would I be ok to hollow tyne to hopefully let the water get in or is it not recommended at this time of year? I've been watering but it's not soaking in, thanks in advance
I sure Shaun will reply soon but I don’t think hollow tining is recommended during summer, best to be done early spring or autumn… sounds like you would benefit from a wetting agent which will help the water penetrate into the soil. Best of luck.

Talcum powder apparently works like ant powder but it works better if the ground is dry it cut them to and I Use ant powder to kill Wasps nests if found and Vine weevil . Thank you Shaun good content a like from me 👍👊
Interesting, you know I don't have that many ants and I normally step around them. They are there for a reason and what would that reason be? I have not researched that idea as of today. One thing I did notice though interestingly enough was that I knew I had a big mound in my backyard last year of black ants. They had been eating my deck for sometime. I had purchased some colored bags of mulch. Those bags sat there for two years due to a health issue, once opened; well lets put it this way I repopulated the backyard but maybe at the same time I found a trap and a way to relocate said ants. Many year back in 1988 I took apart a second story porch that I knew had ants but I did not know the level until I started cutting the joists, once I did cut one joist hundreds if not a thousand or more flew into the sky. It was a site to see. My tenant had asked about black ants in the home. The porch had a metal covered flooring and the home had been built in 1923, it didn't look terrible but it was infested. The columns were two by four with a six by six casing. At that time we poured a gallon of ant killer down each column. re-joisted and rebuilt the decking. All was good after that. They can be destructive, keep an eye on them. They have a job on this earth just not always the job we are interested in them doing for us people. Starting work on my deck this week and working out a way to stop them in the future. A deck column lecher of some sort would probably stop them. Ever heard of such a thing?
Hi.. no I've not heard of the column lecher. What is it and what doe sit do? I googled it but couldnt find anything.. Ants are part of the overall circle of life especially where soil health is concerned. (Fungi and bacteria and so on) so they are definitely needed.. this video is hopefully showing ways to minimise the unsightly mounds.
@@LawnRight The column lecher was more an idea then anything to protect a wooden deck from ants. A device that would leech a non lethal to animals substance in some form to the base stopping ants from proceeding to the wood. A square container around the a column base to dispense Diatomaceous Earth on days after a rain as I believe it washes away. Just an idea for those. Yes you did a very good job of showing how to deal with an over populated area of ants.
Shaun the new grass is growing and Im on top of the watering. some of it is over 2 inches tall. My biggest concern is that some spots look very thin whike other areas are looking much thicker. Should I broadcast more seed in those thinner areas?
Hi it's not been very long since it was done.. I'd sit and wait another week and review.. you may then see other seeds coming in. By then you may be ready to give it a mow with a light mower on a high setting
Does using either chemical products burn the grass. I have followed to the letter how to rectify my lawn from scratch and is near perfect apart from the return of lots of ants nests, both red and black ones. I want to spray the full lawn but will the sprays harm my new lawn. Thanks Shaun

Boric acid (borax), mix 5 part sugar, 3 part water and 1 part boric acid. Boil the 3 part water. It will make a paste. Mix it really well. Place half a waffle in a take-away container, make sure there is a few holes in the container. Pour some solution over the waffle, and place the container near the nest.
Best way to resolve ants for good… is travel to South America and smuggle back a ‘pet’ anteater with you… hey presto, no more ants ever and problem solved 👍🏻🤣
Will adding the powder/spray down the cracks and into the soil not burn and kill the grass, please? I now have around 30 yellow meadow ant nests in my lawn and tried everything on your list, including 4 recent cycles of nematodes and still no joy!
Hi it shouldnt do.. if anything it could excite some ants and cause some lawn stressing.. but if unsure try it in one mound first and review after a week. Nature can do funny things!

This is great information but I always worry about the effect on other animals in the food chain. Do you happen to know if a green woodpecker eats dead or dying ants? If so, could they then be affected by whatever product that has been used. I hate ants and we do seem to suffer with them but I have also seen woodpeckers in the garden and I really do not want to jeopardise them. Great thing would be if you know how I can attract more green woodpeckers!! Lol
Ha ha I dont know how to attract more other than food they love. I guess this video is aiming to try and at least control the numbers a hit so that mounds aren't visible. I've no problem with them in the soil and do agree on the soil food web and the need for the various life forms, fungi and bacteria and ants to create the ever circling web. For some people though it can be too much. The flooding technique would make the most sense as its totally organic.. much the same with turfsolv

Sorry mate I didn't cover that. Just domestic use. Sadly many of the pesticides I used to use are banned now

I’ve tried pouring 30Litres of boiling water into a nest, could have easily poured another 30 L in. It didn’t do much good, either way.

Hi no they wont. The ant powder can do so I advise putting spade Into the mound open it up by wiggling the slide powder down the spade into the mound

think you should have done your research first, baking soda is not borax. borax is a laundry booster and a general cleaner.

This is great information but I always worry about the effect on other animals in the food chain. Do you happen to know if a green woodpecker eats dead or dying ants? If so, could they then be affected by whatever product that has been used. I hate ants and we do seem to suffer with them but I have also seen woodpeckers in the garden and I really do not want to jeopardise them. Great thing would be if you know how I can attract more green woodpeckers!! Lol
Ha ha I dont know how to attract more other than food they love. I guess this video is aiming to try and at least control the numbers a hit so that mounds aren't visible. I've no problem with them in the soil and do agree on the soil food web and the need for the various life forms, fungi and bacteria and ants to create the ever circling web. For some people though it can be too much. The flooding technique would make the most sense as its totally organic.. much the same with turfsolv
