Something similar happened with me and my family about 30 years ago when we were returning from Kanha Wildlife Reserve and we had a late night train to catch from Jabalpur station. The taxi driver dropped us at the station at around 10 pm. Our train was at 2 AM and we were waiting in the waiting room for 1st Class passengers at Jabalpur station. At around 12 am the taxi driver came in the waiting room looking for us to return a pouch in which were 10000 Rupees which we had forgotten in the taxi. He knew our train was late in the night and he had spent around 1 hour at the station searching for us on various platforms when someone told him to look for us in the waiting room. Needless to say, he wouldn't accept any money from us for his good deed.

I can share a similar story. Born in India but immigrated to the USA almost five decades ago. In my younger years with two toddlers, we traveled to India in early 90s to be with extended families on both sides. These were the days of shoulder mounted VCR camcorders, the big heavy types. Well, in hustle and bustle of lugging luggage, babies and so forth, we left our camera bag in tuktuk (rickshaw). It was late at night and dark street where we were dropped off at uncle's home. Of course panic set in at the loss and lost all hopes. Not only we lost the camcorder with tape in it, the Indian Customs and Border officers had listed the camera as "return back to USA when I go back home", now if the camera is not with me, they would have charged me hefty hefty duties.
Lol and behold, the tuktuk driver ultimately found our uncles home about 20 hours into next day to hand us off the camcorder bag fully intact. And yes, he refused any rewards but we absolutely wouldn't let him leave empty handed. He spent hours upon hours looking for us, the least I could do was pay him for his lost earnings when he couldn't go out make living when he was looking for us.
    Very honest generous kind people.

The best that urban Indians like me do is to insulate ourselves to the best extent possible in our condos and so on, but once in a while the cocoon is ripped to shreds and you are pulled out and made to experience Indian life in its rawest, most harrowing and yet sometimes most rewarding form. I always tell people that "India is the land of Rama and Krsna but it is also the land of Ravana and Kamsa -- never forget that." But the good ones dominate otherwise I would not have stayed for more than 20 years. I could tell many stories. This is an example, a friend and I were were taking a train from Bangalore to Hyderabad (this was in 1977). We had tickets but no seat or bunk reservations (unreserved class, the lowest class). We have an altered and polluted culture now, but i cant comprehend how the hospitality of ancient India was with "Atithi devo bhava" (Guest is God) with these videos i understand that why my country was called the centre of heaven, Tenjiku in the past, it was all so authentic pure culture, now its not the same, but the remains of our real culture, is just a glimpse of the concept of "Atithi devo bhava" now though the hospitality, love, care affection isnt the same cus of the invasions we faced only cus of that level of hospitality, My heart aches, but yeah humanity lives till humans exist. @@windssn3z I guess the pace of humanity has changed these things worldwide. I also noticed everywhere I traveled, that people off the tourist trail are even more generous and kind. In bigger cities with many tourists things were always a bit harsher. 🙏🏽

@thetrvlrofficial true! The hospitality u feel in now 3rd world, once 1st world nations is all cus of the traditions and culture that still stood the test of time. The 1st world nations today have MANY tourists, if u see the history of India, ancient India had many tourists too and at that time it was 1st world nation. It's actually the culture that survives. The loss of culture is mainly cus of the invasions that took place anywhere in the world.

There is a story about Mullah Nasserudin.
He was walking along one day by the river and saw a dog looking at his reflection and growling. When it growled back it made him more angry and the dog wanted to get closer to his reflection.
And now he was fiercely barking at his reflection in the water. Trying to get closer he fell into the river. But soon managed to get out .The dog finally walked away never looking back.
On observing this, Mullah Nasserudin realized that all his life he had been barking at his own reflection.
The whole day had come and gone in him and he'd called it a bad day!

I've been in India travelling solo for almost 3 months. Having experienced extreme moments of random kindness and generosity, people who walked with me to my destination, people who tried to give me food and even money!!! I was very touched beyond words, at the same time I have been harressed countless times by auto drivers and been cheated of monies- I was friendly and kind in these instances. It's not very wise to generalised India as a singular entity, you'll find diversity or extremes sometimes within a few steps away. It's a place to learn life lesson and NOT a place for leisure!

Indian changed me too! It's true that there were beggars and hangers on at every turn and it can become so tiresome to have someone trying to sell you this or take you to that place or want to help you carry your bags. I went there in 1995 and on arrival I also hardened my demeanor with the thought that if I acknowledged every person who approached me I'd not only not get anywhere (or worse - end up somewhere I didn't want to be) but I would also be penniless. On the second night of being here, I wondered the streets and at nighttime there was less of a bustle of people. I walked by a lady selling mandarin oranges and she had a pleading look in her eyes which I first ignored. I then realised how hardened I had become and also realised that this lady wasn't begging but in fact wanted to sell her fruit to make a living. I retracted my steps and bought a bag of oranges from her for a few rupees. As I walked away I was in tears at how harsh life can be. How unfair it was and how lucky I was to have been dealt a relatively easy life.
A few days later I visited a squatter town on the outskirts of the city. It was a place no tourists ever ventured and I was immediately spotted by the local kids. I found my way to the village store and the owner invited me to take a seat and offered me a drink. People gathered round and the store owner, who spoke good English, asked me questions and then translated my replied to the small crowd. After finishing my drink I got up to leave and asked how much for the drink. The owner refused to take my money. I then took out a HK$5 coin from my pocket which actually had greater value than what the drink was worth and asked him to take the coin as a memento of my visit and was glad when he accepted it.

India is a mix of experiences. I lived in US and miss it. I miss the straight setup, right from police to ministers. All are basically honest and working. In india you face a cheat every next second. Civil servants, government officers, politicians. All cheats. Yet, as God runs this country, we are progressing because of our private sector and now because of few good men like Modi and Yogi. At the basic level however, you have a lot of possibilities to interact and learn. Today people mix and interact. Soon this will be gone when the economy develops. Indians are the same as any other human being in US or europe. Come facilities and money, they too will shut their doors.😊 so life is within, I now believe, and not in the society.
