  • What does it mean to REFINE an oboe reed?
What's the difference between scraping for vibration and scraping for refinement?
This month in my FLOW program we are working with the theme of REFINING, so I wanted to talk about it here as well!

Always makes me smile watching you shred that thing from a blank to a nice rattle in under 3 minutes! Those deep cuts into the base of the tip still gives me an elevator drop sensation in my gut, so will have to continue to admire from afar, but super impressive.

You can hide your eyes the next time to avoid that gut thing... thanks for watching, Ross!

Yes!!!!! Fabulous video. I also keep going back to your recent Day1, 2, and 3, day scrape videos, and this is the cherry on top the sundae. Since going to your oboe reed boot camp over the years, along with your reedmaker series of videos, I find I love to also hack away to get that Day 1 scrape out of the way (Joe reed). With making around 12 reeds a week, I don't have the time to be finicky.....thank you as always; you are wonderful!

Love the video. Please consider showing the profile of your reed after that Day One scrape. It would be nice to see that heart-tip transition from the side.

Great idea! For sure I’ll show you that profile in Reed Club, but I’ll think about a UA-cam video as well.

Another great video! Ever since your video on “Joe Reed” I’ve let go of a lot of fussiness in the early stages of reed making.
I have a question about windows. I know you’ve already done a few vids on the windows, but maybe you could sneak this into a different vid if you don’t want to do another entire video. Do you consider the windows to be everything from 49-50mm up to 60mm, or are you thinking mostly about the 56-57mm up to the 60mm mark? I know I typically scrape the back (windows) somewhat evenly the entire distance, with maybe a very few extra strokes just behind the plateau. But I know other reed makers don’t take too much out of the back and dig fairly aggressively right behind the plateau. What is your concept of windows?
Another possible topic is (thin) rails going all the way up the reed to the start of the tip (leaving a thin strip of bark in the rails of the heart region), vs. an overall “even” concept of the heart or plateau.
Thank you for the great content!!!
