      @o_sagui6583 That is not correct, though. Japanese companies register their copyright with their version of the US patent and trademark office. Just like in the US as a copyright holder you do not have to enforce anything to keep your copyright unlike what happens with trademarks. Those are the ones that get diluted is they are not enforced at every instance.

    The difference with monster hunter is that you usually only get one actual big content dlc that doubkes the game content. You're basically just buying two 40 dollar games, and if you don't buy the game until after the dlc releases, you get the base game for cheaper

    I think the biggest factor why AAA games are too expensive these says, is how incomplete they are. Back in the day when a game came out it was complete, finished, polished, and ready to be played to completion with replay ability. Then video game consoles connected to the internet, and they started to get patches, games were less polished, the Day 1 patch, is was so common every one expected it. But now, games come out incomplete, with road maps that stretch seven years and will only last 2 months at best. And yet, we're expected to pay more? Huh?

    • @1wayroad935
      @1wayroad935 2 місяці тому +10

      Let's not pretend that incomplete and trash games didn't exist back in the day either. The PS1 and PS2 were littered with garbage titles all over. People only just remember the good games from those eras, which is why no one talks about those awful games.

      @@1wayroad935 The thing is most of the AAA game's were not in that category, which is his point. Were there horrible games on the PS2? 100% but the games from the well known company's like Sony and Capcom etc could not be released and be dog shit because they had no opportunity to fix it after release. If Sony made a game like Redfall on the PS2 they would pay for it heavily in terms of sales and media coverage.

      i think your nostalgia goggles are glued to your face. back in the day games had ALOT of glitches and stuff, even great games like mario 64 and ocarina of time are very buggy, but people got used to it or are blinded by nostalgia.
      then theres other games that just work terribly. but they didn't have the opportunity to ever fix these unless they comepletly rereleased these games

      @@matthewm4016 bruh even the well known and liked games can be very buggy, but those things are just ignored most of the time nowadays
      like kingdom hearts 2 for example, granted it works great, atleast the final mix version does. idk how many bugs they fixed in that, but they definently balanced ALOT. buuuuuuuut the atlantis musical sections still have the bug of not being able to be unpaused.
      or kingdom hearts 1 you couldn't skip cutscenes in the orginal game, while not a bug, it's still a really bad thing that they nowadays could've easily patched, but in the olden times had to release a completly new version for it

    So I believe the main reason why prices are $60+ is bc we're used to paying that price as my generation (Zoomers) grew up with that price range, and bc of it, that was a standard for $60 being the minimum for AAA games

  • @zombiekillerr9764
    @zombiekillerr9764 2 місяці тому +3

    I vaguely remember someone from Rockstar Games talking about the possibility of pricing games based on per hour of development, so generally a game like gta 5 whixh took tens of thousands of hours would suddenly cost anywhere from $1000.0 to $10k.
    If they ever decided to do this i can easily see them immediately changing their minds once their stocks start tanking as almost 95% of all their regular customer base becomes alienated because of the price tag that would be the equivalent of buying 2 next gen consoles.
    Even now call of duty is inflating their prices to nearly 100 dollars for the standard edition. And 140 for the vault edition for the newer ones.
    At least cod being added to gamepass will combat this jarring issue but will suck for the online only aspect for most of the games on gamepass.

    Baldur's Gate 3 is the only game thaI have a seen people not only expecting DLC for the game but asking for it but the developers declined because they didn't feel they could give it the care they expect. The game was so much fun and was great value they want more and are willing to throw more money at it but the developers aren't trying to just cash in on easy content additions.

    what i think people don't talk about enough is the amount of people that work on games now. while yeah sure games are alot more digital now we have a CRAZY amount of developers for AAA games nowadays. for comparison:
    secrets of mana: about 60 people
    gta 5 (which already is a pretty old game so yeah.): 1000 people
    that's ALOT more than 10x the amount of people that have to be paid

  • @RookMeAmadeus
    @RookMeAmadeus 2 місяці тому +2

    You pretty much nailed the important details. Games really shouldn't be as expensive as they are today. Yes, they're far, FAR cheaper than in the 70s/80s/90s. You have to factor in that almost everything is digital distribution now. The majority of console games, and almost 100% of PC games. There's little to zero cost for production, transportation, and storage. As for the whole "Steam takes 30%" issue, physical storefronts took their cut as well.
    Not to mention, games released today are more often than not unfinished. No game is absolutely PERFECT on day 1, but it's normal for massive, game-breaking bugs to show up in AAA releases. Some companies, like everyone's new favorite, Ubisoft, release LITERALLY unfinished games at the base $70 price, too. If there's DLC containing more than cosmetic content on day 1 that isn't included in the base price, then the base game is incomplete. Not even getting into the fact that playing the game on its ACTUAL release date is now a perk for paying even more money to pre-order one or more DLCs before the base game is even out...

    • @jeffboy4231
      @jeffboy4231 Місяць тому

      yeah but there's also ALOT more devs on games now that have to be paid, secrets of mana had 60 people. gta 5 had 1000, idk if that outweighs the cost physical manufacturing had or not, but it still costs alot of money
      also games in the olden games were better made on AVERAGE, but there's who knows how many games out there from that time era that are barely playable and never got to be playable because they couldn't be easily fixed with a patch.
      games today might show up with massive gamebreaking bugs, but those will most likely be patched in a week at MAX. meaning you can just see it for yourself as the game releasing a week late than it actually did

    • @RookMeAmadeus
      @RookMeAmadeus Місяць тому +1

      @@jeffboy4231 Which highlights one of the big problems with the industry today. There's not really a good reason for most games being this expensive, because there's no proof those massive budgets/dev pools are being used anywhere CLOSE to properly in most cases.
      Starfield had hundreds or thousands of devs and 8-10 years of dev time. WB's latest disaster with the initials SS:KtJL (since you can't use its full title in comments without them getting blocked) had a budget of over $200 mil, hundreds of devs, and who knows just how long in dev time. Neither of those games look or play like anything CLOSE to justifying that much in resources and time. Diablo 4 isn't bad, but it definitely doesn't justify multiple thousands of devs and a couple hundred million dollars over ~5 years of dev time.
      And games being buggy messes on day 1 should not be the norm. There's always going to be SOME bugs, but anything game-breaking you can hit within an hour or two of playing should never make it to a full release build. The problem is, devs know they can get away with it. Some dev studios are much better about it, but the majority will just let something ship broken and fix it later.

    While not trying to defend Ubisoft as a company, they do enough shady and reprehensible stuff already. The quote "gamers need to get used to not owning their games" is taken heavenly out of context. The original purpose of that sentence was to answer a hypothetical answer given by the interviewer, which was about Cloud Gaming and what it needs to succeed.
    That's why he said that, he was explaining that in order for Cloud Gaming to succeed they need gamers to not care about owning their games, that was all. He wasn't suggesting the industry needs to move that way, he even said the opposite, explaining that they want to offer BOTH options, Cloud for those that want the Cloud and Ownership for those who want to Own.

    Inflation doesn't mean what people think it means. Games back then weren't the equivalent of spending 100+ dollars for "Oink". When you put a quarter into a vending machine back then you weren't somehow manifesting an additional 1 or 2 quarters and somehow spending 75 cents for 1 quarter. It was still a quarter. However, it was the VALUE of that quarter that was higher.
    People today are getting about the same amount of money that they did before. However, the value of that money is dropping substantially. Therefore, things seem way more expensive because we don't have the same spending power, even though we have about the same amount of cash.

    The only games that interest me from Nintendo are Pokemons and their condition I prefer to keep silent. Some of their newer installments of the Pokemon series cry out for vengeance to heaven. Such a saying from my country. Their games have no right to be in such bad condition since they have a monopoly. No wonder Palworld has become so popular. Because of the monopoly, people are starved.
    In Poland, a campaign to reduce prices on steam for the Polish region has been launched. We have some of the most expensive games in the world on steam. And how much do we earn? The minimum national paycheck here is, after conversion to euros, about 1,000 euros. It shouldn't be like that. Some games cost as much as we would earn in Norway and Canada. I feel like his disdain for expansions is unwarranted, both artistically and from the perspective of the consumer. Has it been abused? Absolutely. So has everything. But the traditional gamer perspective on it is that an expansion, a real serious one, will add between 50% to 100% more content to the game, and thus warrant the price tag. Because you're basically buying a soft-sequel to the game that plugs directly into it. Monster Hunter expansions, which Thor claims to dislike, are probably the best example of this. They nearly always DOUBLE the size of the game, sometimes more, and when they drop, the base game price usually gets slashed. So his take on that feels out-of-touch.

      It's because it's a closed ecosystem, it's why the Steamdeck revitalised handheld gaming and the Switch didn't, because the Switch was held back severely by the fact that Nintendo designed it to play Nintendo games and little more.
      This has been the case since the Gameboy, truelly it's actually a very old-school console thing to do.
      You just don't buy consoles for an open ecosystem, and Nintendo is fundamentally a console company, Sony and Microsoft aren't much better, but Nintendo is just a special kind of anti-consumer, like Apple is compared to .. well every other PC/electronics hardware company.

    Thank you, Sussy Jack. I generally only Buy Nintendo Games, because if I'm Paying $60, i would Rather buy a Complete Game, even if I gotta buy a $10 expansion pass. Which is way better than buying 10% of a Game for $60, and then paying $1,000 for the other 90% like Western Developers do.

      You do realize Asian games are WAY worse when it comes to microtransactions right? Especially Korea and China.

      @noble7065 Correct. But I only get Japanese RPGS that fully fleshed out. I kinda like Korean games a bit. And I have never given Chinese games a try, Considering who owns them.

      @@noble7065 Also, like was mentioned in the video, Nintendo really only has 5 games that carry them, and other than the new LoZ games It's just remakes that are not really much different from their past versions (Mario Kart, Mario Party, etc). Their older games never seem to drop in price (Also mentioned in the video, 10 year old Skyward Sword is still $60 for example).
      Other modern Nintendo games have felt lackluster to me. The online services are often frustrating because of netcode and latency (To the point people have just accepted it and coined the term "Nintendo Lag")
      The switch is woefully behind in a hardware sense with it's only real upside being that it is portable (The steam deck stomps all over it as a handheld device btw)
      Don't get me wrong, All the other AAA developers are also bad for their own reasons (Some more egregious than others). Just pointing out that Nintendo is not any better for their own reasons

    The author of the video is dishonest in his defense of video games going up in price. THE ENTIRE premise of the game pricing is volume of sales and what the market is willing to pay for games. If you raise prices for games less people will buy them. Also prices have actually gone way up. You now have microtransaction ladden where you not just play full price, you pay potentially unlimited amount of money on the BS they sell you along with the changes they do to games to manipulate players to buy them.
